Sensemaking is the process through which humans put together understanding of related information. Sensemaking has been said to involve changes in cognitive representations during a human information processing task. Collection sensemaking involves understanding a collection of media entities, as a whole. One example of a sensemaking task is to compare the damage from Hurricane Katrina to homes, personal effects, and community buildings in different areas of New Orleans. Connected visual and semantic representations provide perspective to support users involved in collection sensemaking tasks. A zoomable map organizes images based on location at varying scales. Multiscale clusters based on zoom level organize images associated with events. The clusters afford contextualized thumbnail browsing and also maintain uniform information density on the map. Metadata enhances context and memory in the process of collection sensemaking.

The new Open Semantic Collaboration Architecture Foundation aims at common standards in collaborative software. The OSCA Foundation brings together organisations and individuals interested in ensuring interoperability between desktops and collaborative environments. Melita is an ontology-based text annotation tool. It implements a methodology with the intent to manage the whole annotation process for the users. It was noticed that several steps in the process, which till now are done manually can be easily automated and handled all by the system. The main competencies of Melita can be summarised into four groups, i.e. the Managing task, the Extraction, the Learning and the Information Tagging Autonomously. The Cultural Revival Dialog - Building the Europe of the Future Together - was organized by the European Movement Croatia in cooperation with the University of Oslo Knowledge Federation Project, on occasion of the 60th anniversary of the International European Movement. The invitation letter was sent to prominent Croatian researchers, policy makers and media workers, inviting them to a free and open dialog about the prospects for contemporary cultural revival. As always, the purpose of this Key Point Dialog was to come closer to the Key Point - an inspiring vision of the cultural revival, which The Club of Rome considered to be the solution to our global issues, or to the world problematique as they called them. This time we began our dialog by reflecting about a specific theme, the Sheng Zhen Qigong. The intention behind this reflection was to become aware of the nature of our present cultural turning point, of the obstacles that hinder us from changing course, and of the opportunities that a new direction may make available.

Assuming that meaning is dependent upon the interplay between lived experience and theoretical (cultural and social) constructs, the task of this chapter in analyzing the sensemaking processes and activities which occurred during the field trip is to integrate lived experiences with theoretical constructs in such a way that the meanings generated from this integration resonate as valid for both field trip participants and informed readers. Or to paraphrase Ken Wilber,1 through the integration of subjective truthfulness and objective truth we seek mutual understanding. To achieve this end, my analysis incorporates the three strands of valid knowing (instrumental injunction, direct experience, and communal confirmation), as outlined in chapter two, and the three cultural value spheres (subjective, intersubjective, and objective domains of knowing), also outlined in chapter two, with three sensemaking themes (being there, storytelling, and living together) which emerged directly from the lived experiences of the participants during the course of the field trip.

The Budapest Open Access Initiative arises from a small but lively meeting convened in Budapest by the Open Society Institute (OSI) on December 1-2, 2001. The purpose of the meeting was to accelerate progress in the international effort to make research articles in all academic fields freely available on the internet. The participants represented many points of view, many academic disciplines, and many nations, and had experience with many of the ongoing initiatives that make up the open access movement. In Budapest they explored how the separate initiatives could work together to achieve broader, deeper, and faster success. They explored the most effective and affordable strategies for serving the interests of research, researchers, and the institutions and societies that support research. Finally, they explored how OSI and other foundations could use their resources most productively to aid the transition to open access and to make open-access publishing economically self-sustaining. The result is the Budapest Open Access Initiative. It is at once a statement of principle, a statement of strategy, and a statement of commitment.

Cyberinfrastructure for Phylogenetic Research (CIPRES) project is an open collaboration funded by the National Science Foundation. The group is led by Tandy Warnow and involves researchers (biologists, computer scientists, statisticians, and mathematicians) at sixteen institutions. The goal of the CIPRES project is to enable large-scale phylogenetic reconstructions on a scale that will enable analyses of huge data sets containing hundreds of thousands of bio molecular sequences. To achieve this goal we have brought together a group of researchers involved in phylogeny estimation, statistics, and computer science to create new solutions for the difficult computational problems that arise in inferring evolutionary relationships.

A software engine that pulls together facts by combing through more than 500 million Web pages has been developed by researchers at the University of Washington. The tool extracts information from billions of lines of text by analyzing basic relationships between words.

A system and method for organizing knowledge in such a way that humans can find knowledge, learn from it, and add to it as needed is disclosed. The exemplary system has four components: a knowledge base, a learning model and an associated tutor, a set of user tools, and a backend system. The invention also preferably comprises a set of application programming interfaces (APIs) that allow these components to work together, so that other people can create their own versions of each of the components. In the knowledge web a community of people with knowledge to share put knowledge in the database using the user tools. The knowledge may be in the form of documents or other media, or it may be a descriptor of a book or other physical source. Each piece of knowledge is associated with various types of meta-knowledge about what the knowledge is for, what form it is in, and so on. The information in the knowledge base can be created specifically for the knowledge base, but it can also consist of information converted from other sources, such as scientific documents, books, journals, Web pages, film, video, audio files, and course notes. The initial content of the knowledge web comprises existing curriculum materials, books and journals, and those explanatory pages that are already on the World Wide Web. These existing materials already contain most of the information, examples, problems, illustrations, even lesson plans, that the knowledge web needs. The knowledge base thus represents the core content (online documents or references to online or offline documents); the meta-knowledge that was created at the time of entry; and a number of user annotations and document metadata that accumulate over time about the usefulness of the knowledge, additional user opinions, certifications of its veracity and usefulness, commentary, and connections between various units of knowledge.
