welcome to gnowsis, the Semantic Desktop environment published by the Knowledge Management Lab of the DFKI. Gnowsis is a reference implementation of parts of the Nepomuk Semantic Desktop framework. The Nepomuk project provides a standardized, conceptual framework for Semantic Desktops.Gnowsis can be used in research projects or by interested individuals to benefit from Semantic Web technologies.

Networked Environment for Personalized, Ontology-based Management of Unified Knowledge NEPOMUK brings together researchers, industrial software developers, and representative industrial users, to develop a comprehensive solution for extending the personal desktop into a collaboration environment which supports both the personal information management and the sharing and exchange across social and organizational relations.

Integrate. Relate. Infer. Share. IRIS is a semantic desktop application framework that enables users to create a "personal map" across their office-related information objects. IRIS includes a machine-learning platform to help automate this process. It provides "dashboard" views, contextual navigation, and relationship-based structure across an extensible suite of office applications, including a calendar, web and file browser, e-mail client, and instant messaging client.

MyWebDesktop is a collaboration and communication tool, designed to be as "generic" and easy to use as a telephone and email. Connect your desktop to any other desktop (call) and collaborate with a person or a group of people by sharing files, bookmarks and notes and communicate via messaging and messageboard. Disconnect (hang up) when you have finished collaborating with that person or group of people. Of course this works two-way i.e. you call and you receive incoming calls.

NEPOMUK brings together researchers, industrial software developers, and representative industrial users, to develop a comprehensive solution for extending the personal desktop into a collaboration environment which supports both the personal information management and the sharing and exchange across social and organizational relations.

RPI's Tetherless World Constellation will address this emerging area of "Web Science," focusing on the World Wide Web and it's future use. Faculty in the constellation will explore the research and engineering principles that underlie the Web, will enhance the Web's reach beyond the desktop and laptop computer, and will develop new technologies and languages that expand the capabilities of the Web. We will use powerful scientific and mathematical techniques from many disciplines to explore the modeling of the Web from network- and information- centric views. Our goals will include making the next generation web natural to use while being responsive to the growing variety of policy and social needs, whether in the area of privacy, intellectual property, general compliance, or provenance. The Tetherless World Constellation will design new techniques to explore social, scientific, and legal impacts of the evolving technologies deployed on the Web.

DynaQ stands for 'Dynamic Queries for document based, personal information spaces'. The goal of the project is to conceptualise and to develop a prototypical inquiry system to explore the personal information space, that supports the user with the help of the searching paradigm orienteering. The document-based, personal information space of the user constitutes by all documents on his computer. Included are documents of several file formats (e.g. *.pdf), but also the users emails. Also included are all available meta informations and existing semantic informations according to the documents. Users that are not aware of the scientific context of the project can just think of DynaQ as an desktop search engine.

Mustru is a desktop search engine written in Java using Lucene, Lingpipe, and the Berkeley DB . Create an index from a set of directories on your local filesystem and use the Web based interface to query the index. Submit questions in natural language or boolean queries using keywords.

Project Wonderland is a 100% Java and open source toolkit for creating collaborative 3D virtual worlds. Within those worlds, users can communicate with high-fidelity, immersive audio, share live desktop applications and documents and conduct real business. Wonderland is completely extensible; developers and graphic artists can extend its functionality to create entire new worlds and new features in existing worlds.

The new Open Semantic Collaboration Architecture Foundation aims at common standards in collaborative software. The OSCA Foundation brings together organisations and individuals interested in ensuring interoperability between desktops and collaborative environments. It provides a discussion and exchange forum as well as a meeting place for different stakeholder to explore joint interests and define and execute appropriate actions, aiming to ensure the continued evolution and standardisation of an open vendor- and platform-neutral interoperable collaborative environment architecture.
