This article posits a definition and theory for "Library 2.0". It suggests that recent thinking describing the changing Web as "Web 2.0" will have substantial implications for libraries, and recognizes that while these implications keep very close to the history and mission of libraries, they still necessitate a new paradigm for librarianship. The paper applies the theory and definition to the practice of librarianship, specifically addressing how Web 2.0 technologies such as synchronous messaging and streaming media, blogs, wikis, social networks, tagging, RSS feeds, and mashups might intimate changes in how libraries provide access to their collections and user support for that access.

The key to the semantic approach for Zigtag is that shared tags are just that - they are more precise than strings. They are not only words - they have definitions.

This talk is an essay on design. In the 16th century, Michel de Montaigne invented a new genre of writing he called an essai, which in modern French translates to attempt. Since then, the best essays have been explorations by an author of a topic or question, perhaps or probably without a definitive conclusion. Certainly in a good essay there can be no theme or conclusion stated at the outset, repeated several times, and supported throughout, because a true essay takes the reader on the journey of discovery that the author has or is experiencing. This essay-on design-is based on my reflections on work I've done over the past 3 years. Some of that work has been on looking at what constitutes an "ultra large scale software system" and some on researching how to keep a software system operating in the face of internal and external errors and unexpected conditions.

Given a particular node in a particular RDF graph, a concise bounded description is a subgraph consisting of those statements which together constitute a focused body of knowledge about the resource denoted by that particular node. The precise nature of that subgraph will hopefully become clear given the definition, discussion and example provided below. Optimality is, of course, application dependent and it is not presumed that a concise bounded description is an optimal form of description for every application; however, it is presented herein as a reasonably general and broadly optimal form of description for many applications, and unless otherwise warranted, constitutes a reasonable default response to the request "tell me about this resource".

Group sensemaking strikes me as more like science, if it isn't 'meta-science'. In other words, we want to make sense we all agree on that isn't just another kind of ideology or dogma, but based on objective reality. Where science, or at least the reductive approach, aggregates facts and data, sensemaking, like integrative methods, puts the facts into context with a larger environment. Sensemaking, in my view, is about understanding reality sufficiently well that one feels comfortable making statements about the future. That is, not necessarily making predictions, but anticipating future possibilities based on understanding how the world works.
