Un des axes de travail principaux de Kono senseï est la recherche de la façon dont bougeaient les japonais avant l'ère Meïji qui vit l'archipel confronté au monde extérieur après plus de 250 ans d'isolationnisme. Une des différences fondamentales concerne la marche, activité essentielle de tout être humain. Il explique que jusqu'à l'ère Meïji les japonais utilisaient la Namba aruki, marche de Namba. Lors de cette marche les bras sont soient immobiles, soient le bras du côté de la jambe qui avance se déplace avec elle. C'est ce qu'on appelle la marche homolatérale, par opposition à la marche que l'on voit habituellement, controlatérale.
