3-Minute Test Detects Forms Of Dementia That Are Difficult To Diagnose - 1 views

  •
This is a very interesting read, discusses new tool that is more accurate for doctors to help diagnosis forms of dementia. It goes into more depth on the two most common types. :)

It used to be that Alzheimer's could only be determined for certain by autopsy. I believe that's changed now, with scanning techniques and biomarker testing. tests like the one in your article give me a lot of hope that within the next generation, we'll be able not only to better treat dementias, but maybe even prevent them.

Visual Learner alert! Here is a great video demonstrating the box and blocks test with an actual pt. I loved watching this particular video because the pt is funny and gives the therapist a hard time(which will happen in real life!). If you like to watch videos of the tests we are learning watch this one!

Young Adults Living With RA - 1 views

  •
When I saw that we would be talking about RA in class I started looking into it more. My sister who is only 20, was told by her doctor that she may have RA and they are currently doing further testing. At first I thought "there's no way" shes only 20! But then I did some research and found this article. RA is actually fairly common in young adults, especially women. More specifically, there is a 1 in 714 chance for a woman in her 20s to develop RA. This article goes into more detail about these statistics and the cause.
  •
I read in a Health magazine just last night that taking or if you have taken birth control pills, it helps guard against RA.

Interesting that there are a few Bloom's pyramids floating around out there. When you do a search, it brings up a new "revised" version. Even comparing notes before the exam, people had different layouts.

See the world's first mind-controlled prosthetic leg in action | The Verge - 3 views

  •
This was a very interesting article I read regarding a mind controlled bionic leg. The article is from 2013. It stated that there has been mind controlled bionic arms available for a while now. To date, only one man is testing the mind controlled bionic leg. He says he can walk, go up steps, etc just by thinking about the action taken. There is a very short video of him walking with it. Pretty amazing!

Clinical trial tests brain stimulation as part of stroke rehab | OT News News - 2 views

  •
This article discusses a study/clinical trial evaluating whether stimulating the brain before rehab could yield greater gains in motor function. In this process called TMS therapy they apply an electromagnetic current to excite the brain, which they believe slows activity in the healthy area of the brain, which can become overly active after a stroke. They want to improve all aspects of the weak arm such as ROM and strength and to see at the end of the study if it would help with ADL's.

PubMed- Therapeutic Activities vs. Therapeutic Exercise - 5 views

  •
I found this article to be interesting because we are told that Therapeutic Activities is more relevant than Therapeutic Exercise and this article was about a study that showed this to be true. Although this article speaks about PT performing the test i feel it was great to read about the study being performed. Shows really what how important keeping this in mind as we enter the world of Future OTA's. The study was done on 20 patient receiving Therapeutic Exercise after a hand injury and 16 receiving therapy sessions using Therapeutic Activities that mimic ADL's after hand injury. After 3 weeks and 5 days the study showed that the Therapeutic Activities mimicing the ADL's seem to be more beneficial.
