A New Approach to Hip Surgery - 3 views

  •
This article is about a man that knew he needed a hip replacement, but dreaded the long recovery of having one. He talked with a surgeon that recommended using an anterior approach for his surgery because it required much less muscle to be cut through. As a result of using the anterior approach, he had an extremely quick recovery and was able to resume all his favorite actives.

Disabled men "emasculated" and "patronised" by social care services, study finds. - 1 views

  •
Being a man, I often think that if I suffered from a disability that left me dependent on others I might feel a bit 'less than' and this article discusses a study that covers the topic of emasculation in males who are dependent on caregivers. Sexuality is a big part of most people's life and just because someone suffers from a disability doesn't mean that they cease to exist as a sexual being. The article also discusses how the approach to social care is typically asexual and that this approach can come across as patronizing, dismissive, and even disrespectful to a client's sexuality.

How To Talk About Sex With Your Clients - 4 views

  •
Be approachable, open-minded and non-judgmental. This is a great checklist to read over before talking with your clients about sex. Included is how to provide an environment that the client feels safe speaking of sex, key areas that should be covered, some barriers that are faced by minority populations, and many reminders to be open minded, non-judgmental, and to keep your personal beliefs out of the discussion.

This is a tip sheet I discovered on the AOTA website.  It provides very useful tips for helping your older parent remain at home and age in place safely, as well as ways to approach the topic with them.  I really loved the idea of presenting home modifications as gifts. This tip sheet is of particular interest to me as my mother slowly descends into the world of Alzheimer's disease.

How schools ruined recess - and four things needed to fix it - 1 views

  •
"What if we took a totally different approach to recess instead? A therapeutic approach that values the needs of the whole child and views recess as a form of prevention instead of simply time to get "energy out." What if we let children fully move their bodies during recess time, let them get dirty, and even test out new theories?"

Therapists We recognize that each patient you encounter has a unique set of needs. This is why we don't mass-produce anything and instead encourage you and your patient to think of SIRIS™ Splints as a toolkit for creative, thoughtful and sometimes completely original approaches to splinting.

Finding balance: 6 dimensions of wellness - 0 views

  •
Wellness and living a healthy life have evolved to represent more than being physically fit. No longer is it enough to make it to the gym and sweat. Today, being healthy and alive involves a more complex and systematic approach that integrates states of physical, mental and spiritual well-being.

Anterior Hip Replacement - 0 views

WHO IS A CANDIDATE FOR ANTERIOR HIP REPLACEMENT? Many people suffering with arthritis, hip pain, stiffness and limited hip movement can now choose minimally invasive surgery when hip replacement is the chosen treatment of the patient and their doctor. One of the least invasive surgical options is Anterior Hip Replacement. No muscle detachment, no hip precautions. The only place that does this approach in Knoxville is UT hospital.

Anterior Hip Replacement: Anterior vs. Posterior Approach | Sutter Health - 1 views

  •
Good info in this article. With many different links on the side with more details about hip replacement. After my accident in 2004, the doctor told me I will, one day, have to have my hip replaced. So this information is very interesting to me and also to share with what we are covering in class.

Dysphagia - 1 views

  •
Thought this might be helpful this next week in studying for the test. This topic alarms me in a way, because it is so important we are competent in this area. We need to research as much as we can about it. This article goes into detail the characteristics of dysphagia and how to approach treatment. One interesting fact in the article is that polypharmacy is related to it.

Visitability - 1 views

  •
Universal Design E-World provides web based tools to support the "community of practice" in universal design. This is a great resource to learn all about visitability. The website details the requirements of visitability in the home and how universal housing design benefits everyone, not just the disabled population. No step entrances and wide hallways make it easier for strollers, moving furniture in and out, etc. There are several PDF reports containing more information on topics relating to visitabiltiy that can be downloaded by the user. These include design approach, increasing home access and universal design in housing. I think that universal design is much more feasible and aesthetically pleasing than renovations to make a home more accessible.

I think everyone should watch this video that is working with cancer patients. Knowing what our patients might experience will be our biggest tool when treating.
  •
Wow, this video really puts everything in perspective, especially the girl mentioning her still being worried about homework (day-to-day worries still causing her stress). Gives a unique perspective from young survivors of cancer as well. Typically when one thinks of cancer survivors they generally picture people who are older. I would imagine cancer patients that are younger may have some differing needs in terms of a practitioner's psychosocial approach. Great post!
