Photo credit: John A. Rogers/University Of Illinois Researchers from Northwestern University and the University of Illinois have developed a discreet, wearable device that provides around-the-clock monitoring of both heart and skin health. The skin-like patch measures a mere five centimeters square and is designed to be worn directly on the skin, for example on a user's wrist much like a band aid.

Creating A Sensory Room On A Budget - eSpecial Needs Blog - 0 views

  •
A friend of mine built a sensory room for her child about a year ago. I was fascinated by this. Her dedication to her children never ceases to amaze me. She has adopted three children with special needs. She teaches foster care classes and is in the process of getting trained to teach CPR and first aid for mental health. She built her sensory room on a budge, a tight one. Since we are getting ready to discuss sensory integration I thought this would be an appropriate topic to post here. I can't wait to help clients put together one of these. How fun!

The Amazing Village in The Netherlands Just for People with Dementia - 1 views

  •
I know we are past aging in place by a little bit, but I came across this again and wanted to share! A really interesting outlook on aging in place in a mock village for dementia patients. The patients live on site in their own apartments which they are aided in managing independently. The town has everything from grocery stores to movie theaters. Nursing staff dress in plain clothes to give the environment a "real-life" feel and encourage patients to operate on their own schedule. This is currently in the Netherlands, but how cool would it be to have OT's work in something like this!

3-D printed wrist splints for arthritis sufferers - 3 views

  •
A computer software concept has been developed that will enable clinicians with no experience in Computer Aided Design (CAD) to design and make custom-made 3D printed wrist splints for rheumatoid arthritis sufferers. The 3D printed splints are not only more comfortable and attractive but potentially cheaper than the current ones that are 'ugly, bulky, and can make a patients arm sweat'.
  •
What a great idea. So many things are being done/accomplished due to 3-D printing. I can only imagine what our future holds in the area.

Amputees Learn To Use Artificial Limbs - 1 views

  •
This is an old, short 1916 film with no sound showing soldiers, who are amputees, wheelchair racing, playing tug-of-war, marching, and dancing. This is conjecture -- but maybe there are reconstruction aides helping them out -- the people who helped in the development of occupational therapy. Also, this film shows the amputees as NOT helpless, having fun and very much functional.
