Good resources from the AOTA about OT and cancer care

This link has different powerpoint presentations and other resources you could use in the community or with individual clients. A lot of useful information!!

A nice description on how we should view our roles.

CarFit is a community based program that sponsors events (as a collaborative effort between AOTA, AAA, and AARP) with the purpose of inspecting the older driver in their own vehicle. "trained technicians and/or health professionals work with each participant to ensure they "fit" their vehicle properly for maximum comfort and safety". It takes about 20 mins after which recommendations for adjustments and adaptations are provided. The website provides FAQs and videos with a lot of information pertaining to the older driver and driver safety. Those of you interested in driving rehab may be interested in participating in an event such as this as a COTA in the future.

Note- in order to view this article online, you must be a member of AOTA. This article talks about how different people may define the word "home" differently and how that definition can impact someone's ability to safely "age-in-place" and how a person's home environment can impact a person's engagement in meaningful occupations.

This is a blog that I found in AOTA blogs and it is a must read for all. It gives something to consider about occupational therapy for everyone, not just OT students or professionals. Occupational therapy is the best of all worlds and needed in every realm of life and this man hits the nail on the head in my opinion.

I pulled this from the AOTA website, you must log in to view. I thought this article reaffirms what we have been discussing in class about the role of the OT practitioner in treating patients with COPD. Our main focus is energy conservation (which may include task simplification, deep breathing techniques, and implementing adaptive equipment). This article is not very long and provides a nice WHY we are doing what we are doing.

Ergonomics are important in several areas. They are not just for desk or office spaces. This page has links for ergonomic strategies for carrying a purse, using a briefcase and using a suitcase. These strategies can help reduce pain in the neck, shoulder and lower back.

AOTA describes the role of OT in Health and Wellness

I thought this was an interesting read on the AOTA website regarding ergonomics because it discusses how an OT practitioner would actually be involved in this line of work.

A super short video I took last year at the AOTA conference that I thought was amazing! (as you can tell from my loud mouth reaction) This assistive technology gives the ultimate form of independence!

I was looking for information in AOTA regarding therapeutic exercise and I came across an amazing list of Apps therapists can use. The one App in relation to this post is called Howtodoit therapy. It was developed by an OT and it allows the therapist to create customizable instructions for exercise programs for their clients. This is App is free at the moment. I couldn't find many reviews but I thought it was pretty neat. After checking out this App, look at all of the other Apps listed!

This is an AOTA intervention list that may help us as future OTA with our clients that have arthritis.

I thought this tied in with our speaker on Medicare. It takes each setting and explains details of Medicare. It is very important to know this information when we get out in the field.

OT practitioners will work with clients with dysphagia in many places including long-term care to schools. Preparing the body for best position for swallowing and digestion, modifying textures for safety, and compensatory techniques are all things the practitioner can assist with. AOTA offers certification to practitioners for feeding, eating m and swallowing.

This article is from the AOTA. It describes the role of OT in helping those with breast cancer. The "survivorship" phase is when a person is trying to re-enter their life's role as care taker, bread winner, house keeper, etc. This lists information some types of interventions one might receive in different types of settings.
