This is my second MOOC; I am already addicted to learning this way. I have been taking ideas on how to move the platform for advisory discussions onto a Google+ Community.

I am completely energized by the MOOC experience. One of my seniors tried it: a human physiology course out of Yale. She was overwhelmed, but grateful to experience the caliber of a "university" course. She ended up dropping after a few months. The pace and rigor were beyond her horizons, but she tried it. We had a conversation about when is it okay to fail. She was finally in a place where she hit the wall. How many of our students hit the wall when they are in a college and paying for it? How many discover only too late that they are in the wrong major?

I can't wait to hear about your experience at our meeting. (Maybe with the extra time I have on my hands now I will give one a try...I've signed up for two, but never got started.) You have my gears spinning about MOOCs and the VTed community. First, I wonder how many schools would be willing to allow students, with oversight and guidance, to participate in a MOOC for credit? Second, what could a Rowland led VTed School Transformation MOOC look like? I see different fellows leading separate sections, sharing ideas and school transformation experiences with class participants who in turn share their own thoughts, inspirations, and challenges. Could have real potential to bring voices together from across the state.

Looking at our efforts and our work as Rowland Fellows...are we providing "palliative care" to our schools? When we think about what we do, our work must embrace true innovation rather than "fortifying existing institutions that no longer work." I feel we are on the right track and am humbled by the work that is being done through this foundation.

Khan as teacher-centered lectures, not student-centered learning.  Still, the videos could support independent learners.

I wonder if there could be some mutual advantages of a high school and a college working together on a framework around ePortfolios?

This is the report we discussed in my reading group at the Rowland Fellows meeting this week. The Pew research Center's report on the Millennials, the generation born between 1980 and 1997, is full of interesting findings which have implications for how schools will need to change in order to reach the Net Generation.

The idea that a leader responds to undercurrents and tailors changes to anticipate what will eventually rise to the surface proves true in the work of Rowland Fellows in their school systems...The best of our school leaders - teachers, principals, superintendents - listen and look for the groundswell. The beauty of transformation from the ground up is that, like a good undercurrent, the conditions that allow it to spread and then surface are best arrived at when philosophies and practices become invitations to participate and a recognition that there are many unique and valuable ways to be a part of a growing undercurrent - for long-term changes to manifest, a good leader proposes - not imposes.

Keynote at ISTE 2012.  Here is a video of YongZhao's presentation.  He was a wonderful speaker, very engaging and funny, but with a clear and serious message.  There is about 15 minutes of intro stuff first, but you can fast forward that if you are short on time.  His talk is about an hour and well worth your time.

I like this question.  Maybe Amanda or Ann could use it?  Not sure who is teaching digital literacy these days, but maybe they could all team up?  Or the library might have some nice video editing equipment and we could host our own video challenge?
