Oscar Wilde once said "One should either be a work of art, or wear a work of art." That the Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum of Art will open its exhibit "Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty" next week is a reminder that, at its most masterful, fashion is art. At that level-and perhaps at levels less skilled but no less inspired-it's also often influenced by art.

Montreal-based artist Kevin Ledo uses images of world famous fashion icons such as Dior, Calvin Klein, Jean-Paul Gaultier, Prada and Louis Vuitton to draw parallels between modern fashion and Christian art from European medieval times. Coolhunting notes Ledo does this by, "transposing methods of religious paintings into an advertising context".

Despite his usual dark streak (as evidenced in my previous post), Joel Peter Witkin lapsed into the world of high fashion and more traditional art (or maybe he's just becoming more of a softy with age :) in this 2006 fashion series for the NY Times.
