  • Ainsi, il a fallu attendre que Nicolas Sarkozy et Angela Merkel commencent à penser d’envisager de taxer les transactions financières pour que cette proposition, défendue depuis plus de dix ans par Attac (Association pour la taxation des transactions financières et pour l’action citoyenne), émerge dans nos grands quotidiens, télévisions et radios comme une éventualité concevable. Les propositions d’Attac ont été, durant ces longues années, régulièrement tournées en dérision par nombre d’éditocrates, qui ne voyaient aucune raison de prendre au sérieux de doux rêveurs qui affirmaient qu’« un autre monde est possible ». Il faut donc, une nouvelle fois, constater le suivisme médiatique vis-à-vis des possédants, seuls à même d’imposer une question dans le débat public.
  • Si des journalistes en prennent prétexte pour analyser les effets possibles d’une telle taxation, les éditorialistes ont du mal à se remettre de leur stupéfaction. Ainsi celui du Monde peut courageusement titrer : « Taxer les riches, avec leur bénédiction »

  • A l’automne 2010, à l’heure où il s’agissait de faire voter au parlement une contre-réforme des retraites, on ne croit pas avoir lu, dans Le Monde, une tribune de M. Robert Martin, smicard, pour demander que le projet soit retiré. On ne croit pas avoir entendu, au journal de 13 heures de France Inter, M. Rafik Moukine, ouvrier, dire pendant deux minutes s’il était « prêt à travailler deux années de plus ». Les responsables syndicaux, certes, ont eu la parole. Mais des centaines de milliers de manifestants qui se sont exprimés publiquement dans la rue il n’est resté sur les chaînes de télévision que quelques bénéficiaires de micro-trottoirs : quinze secondes pour chacun, et pas plus ! Il est vrai que l’idée de reporter l’âge de départ à la retraite ne venait pas des salariés mais du Medef. Il faut alors constater que, quelle que soit l’idée soumise à nos responsables politiques, les principaux médias français semblent ne s’intéresser qu’à l’avis de ceux qu’ils appellent « les décideurs ».
  • Ainsi émergent, du jour au lendemain, de « grandes questions », souvent dérisoires et toujours circonscrites au cercle critique constitué par les animateurs des débats et leurs partenaires, déterminé par ceux-là même qui sont tout à la fois l’objet et les animateurs du débat. Et c’est ainsi, également, que peu suggéreront que cette « taxe pour les riches » ne soit pas qu’exceptionnelle, et pas seulement destinée à « réduire le déficit », mais aussi durable et destinée à soutenir la justice sociale.

In a more democratic and less authoritarian society, one would evaluate the effectiveness of a teacher not by corporatocracy-sanctioned standardized tests but by asking students, parents, and a community if a teacher is inspiring students to be more curious, to read more, to learn independently, to enjoy thinking critically, to question authorities, and to challenge illegitimate authorities.

But London isn't Baghdad, and the British prime minister, David Cameron, is hardly Saddam, so surely there is nothing to learn there.

  • They are just about lawless kids taking advantage of a situation to take what isn't theirs. And British society, Cameron tells us, abhors that kind of behaviour.This is said in all seriousness. As if the massive bank bailouts never happened, followed by the defiant record bonuses. Followed by the emergency G8 and G20 meetings, when the leaders decided, collectively, not to do anything to punish the bankers for any of this, nor to do anything serious to prevent a similar crisis from happening again. Instead they would all go home to their respective countries and force sacrifices on the most vulnerable. They would do this by firing public sector workers, scapegoating teachers, closing libraries, upping tuition fees, rolling back union contracts, creating rush privatisations of public assets and decreasing pensions – mix the cocktail for where you live. And who is on television lecturing about the need to give up these "entitlements"? The bankers and hedge-fund managers, of course.
  • This is what Cameron got wrong: you can't cut police budgets at the same time as you cut everything else. Because when you rob people of what little they have, in order to protect the interests of those who have more than anyone deserves, you should expect resistance – whether organised protests or spontaneous looting. And that's not politics. It's physics.

  • Les rumeurs les plus folles sont relayées dans les salles de marchés, les médias, les dîners en ville, et prospèrent à la vitesse à laquelle les marchés pris de panique s'effondrent. J'y vois un seul signe positif : le nécessaire rappel à l'ordre, brutal et impératif, de remettre de l'ordre dans nos finances publiques. Notre pays est en déficit chronique depuis la seconde partie des années 1970. Pas un gouvernement, quelle que soit son appartenance politique, qui ne se soit adonné à l'addiction au déficit, à la dette, ajoutant ainsi à l'idée que les Français ont de l'Etat-providence et de l'assistanat : "L'Etat y pourvoira !"

      Allons y gaiement, c'est le moment rêvé pour cette clique! Donc ce cher monsieur parmi les seize autres qui s'est évertué à profiter au max des niches fiscales pour etre imposé moins que ses salariés sa vie durant, ramène aujourd'hui sa fraise républicaine pour dire qu'il consent à contribuer EXCEPTIONNELLEMENT à l'effort GENERAL....... à CONDITION QUE l'on démembre définitivement L'Etat providence, cette bonne mère qui s'occupe de TOUS ces enfants sans distinction de riches ou de pauvres (enfin en théorie). C'est sous couvert de magnanimité voire de pitié pour l'Etat qu'il se présente alors que ce n'est que de la rapacité déguisée. On peut compter sur les journaux pour mettre en avant cette image de chevalier désintéressé tout en enfonçant le clou de la nécessaire austérité.
  • Pendant toutes ces décennies nous avons vécu au-dessus de nos moyens, défendant bec et ongles un modèle que nous n'avions plus les moyens de financer. Aujourd'hui la facture nous est présentée, et il faut payer.

Il semblera peut-être curieux à certains de voir que le président de l'Association française des entreprises privées (AFEP) préconise une telle mesure, mais il me paraît indispensable que l'effort de solidarité passe d'abord par ceux que le sort a préservés.

  • Ne nous trompons pas : il ne s'agit pas d'idéologie mais d'un impératif qui s'impose à nous si l'on veut casser la spirale du déclin économique. Est-ce cela la rigueur ? Les mots ont leur importance, et celui-là fait peur. Je ne sais pas si c'est le mot qui convient.

  • Ne pensez-vous pas que les gens sont de plus en plus indifférents ? Au contraire, ils n'ont jamais été autant intéressés par l'éthique. Le problème, c'est l'accès aux informations, très difficile. Pour en obtenir, il a fallu que je me rende dans ces fermes par effraction, au milieu de la nuit, entièrement habillé en noir pour ne pas me faire repérer. Comment blâmer quelqu'un de ne pas savoir ? Dans les collèges américains aujourd'hui, il y a plus de végétariens que de catholiques, c'est devenu un vrai phénomène politique. Quand ces 18% de végétariens vont devenir actifs, vont devenir les journalistes ou les politiciens de demain, le point de vue sur la question de la viande va complètement changer.
  • Il y a dix ans, quand vous disiez à des amis que vous étiez végétarien, ils vous en demandaient la raison. Aujourd'hui, plus de problème. Dans dix ans, la question sera : "Pourquoi mangez-vous de la viande tout le temps ?". La consommation de la viande va évoluer comme celle du tabac aujourd'hui : légale mais régulée.

MPs spoke about the week’s dreadful events as if they were nothing to do with them. I cannot accept that this is the case. Indeed, I believe that the criminality in our streets cannot be dissociated from the moral disintegration in the highest ranks of modern British society. The last two decades have seen a terrifying decline in standards among the British governing elite. It has become acceptable for our politicians to lie and to cheat. An almost universal culture of selfishness and greed has grown up.
  • Most of the people in this very expensive street were every bit as deracinated and cut off from the rest of Britain as the young, unemployed men and women who have caused such terrible damage over the last few days. For them, the repellent Financial Times magazine How to Spend It is a bible. I’d guess that few of them bother to pay British tax if they can avoid it, and that fewer still feel the sense of obligation to society that only a few decades ago came naturally to the wealthy and better off.

Of course, as an MP he obtained these laptops legally through his expenses.

  • But there are those who do not. Certainly, the so-called feral youth seem oblivious to decency and morality. But so are the venal rich and powerful – too many of our bankers, footballers, wealthy businessmen and politicians.
  • Let’s bear in mind that many of the youths in our inner cities have never been trained in decent values. All they have ever known is barbarism. Our politicians and bankers, in sharp contrast, tend to have been to good schools and universities and to have been given every opportunity in life. Something has gone horribly wrong in Britain. If we are ever to confront the problems which have been exposed in the past week, it is essential to bear in mind that they do not only exist in inner-city housing estates. The culture of greed and impunity we are witnessing on our TV screens stretches right up into corporate boardrooms and the Cabinet. It embraces the police and large parts of our media.
