This is pathos because people passing away due to cancer diagnosis is very emotional.
  • Physicians and researchers who specialize in the study, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of cancer are called oncologists.
    • farouk hamood

This is ethos because people listen to the physicians and researchers because of the label they have made for themselves.
  • Cancer is ultimately the result of cells that uncontrollably grow and do not die. Normal cells in the body follow an orderly path of growth, division, and death. Programmed cell death is called apoptosis, and when this process breaks down, cancer begins to form. Unlike regular cells, cancer cells do not experience programmatic death and instead continue to grow and divide. This leads to a mass of abnormal cells that grows out of control.

This is logos because it depends on rationality, reason and proof.
  • Cancer is a class of diseases characterized by out-of-control cell growth. There are over 100 different types of cancer, and each is classified by the type of cell that is initially affected.
    • farouk hamood

This is logos because its is purely based on logic.
  • Cancer harms the body when damaged cells divide uncontrollably to form lumps or masses of tissue called tumors (except in the case of leukemia where cancer prohibits normal blood function by abnormal cell division in the blood stream). Tumors can grow and interfere with the digestive, nervous, and circulatory systems, and they can release hormones that alter body function. Tumors that stay in one spot and demonstrate limited growth are generally considered to be benign.

This is logos because it is a logical form of showing people what cancer is through a video.
  • A short, 3D, animated introduction to cancer. This was originally created by BioDigital Systems and used in the Stand Up 2 Cancer telethon.
  • Cells can experience uncontrolled growth if there are damages or mutations to DNA, and therefore, damage to the genes involved in cell division. Four key types of gene are responsible for the cell division process: oncogenes tell cells when to divide, tumor suppressor genes tell cells when not to divide, suicide genes control apoptosis and tell the cell to kill itself if something goes wrong, and DNA-repair genes instruct a cell to repair damaged DNA. Cancer occurs when a cell's gene mutations make the cell unable to correct DNA damage and unable to commit suicide. Similarly, cancer is a result of mutations that inhibit oncogene and tumor suppressor gene function, leading to uncontrollable cell growth.
    • farouk hamood

This is logos because it explains the growth of cancer and how it spreads.
  • Carcinogens are a class of substances that are directly responsible for damaging DNA, promoting or aiding cancer. Tobacco, asbestos, arsenic, radiation such as gamma and x-rays, the sun, and compounds in car exhaust fumes are all examples of carcinogens. When our bodies are exposed to carcinogens, free radicals are formed that try to steal electrons from other molecules in the body. Theses free radicals damage cells and affect their ability to function normally.
    • farouk hamood

This is logos because it tells what promotes cancer in an understanding and logical way.
  • Cancer treatment depends on the type of cancer, the stage of the cancer (how much it has spread), age, health status, and additional personal characteristics. There is no single treatment for cancer, and patients often receive a combination of therapies and palliative care. Treatments usually fall into one of the following categories: surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, immunotherapy, hormone therapy, or gene therapy.
    • farouk hamood

This is pathos because being treated through cancer is a very emotional experience for people that have to go through it.
  • Surgery is the oldest known treatment for cancer. If a cancer has not metastasized, it is possible to completely cure a patient by surgically removing the cancer from the body. This is often seen in the removal of the prostate or a breast or testicle. After the disease has spread, however, it is nearly impossible to remove all of the cancer cells. Surgery may also be instrumental in helping to control symptoms such as bowel obstruction or spinal cord compression.
    • farouk hamood

This is pathos because for a cancer patient to go through surgery, it takes tons out of them.
  • Radiation treatment, also known as radiotherapy, destroys cancer by focusing high-energy rays on the cancer cells. This causes damage to the molecules that make up the cancer cells and leads them to commit suicide. Radiotherapy utilizes high-energy gamma-rays that are emitted from metals such as radium or high-energy x-rays that are created in a special machine. Early radiation treatments caused severe side-effects because the energy beams would damage normal, healthy tissue, but technologies have improved so that beams can be more accurately targeted. Radiotherapy is used as a standalone treatment to shrink a tumor or destroy cancer cells (including those associated with leukemia and lymphoma), and it is also used in combination with other cancer treatments.
    • farouk hamood

This is pathos because going through radiation takes a lot out of anyone.
  • As cancer cells use the body's energy and interfere with normal hormone function, it is possible to present symptoms such as fever, fatigue, excessive sweating, anemia, and unexplained weight loss. However, these symptoms are common in several other maladies as well. For example, coughing and hoarseness can point to lung or throat cancer as well as several other conditions.
    • farouk hamood

This is pathos because the symptoms of cancer bring people down tons.
  • There are five broad groups that are used to classify cancer. Carcinomas are characterized by cells that cover internal and external parts of the body such as lung, breast, and colon cancer. Sarcomas are characterized by cells that are located in bone, cartilage, fat, connective tissue, muscle, and other supportive tissues. Lymphomas are cancers that begin in the lymph nodes and immune system tissues. Leukemias are cancers that begin in the bone marrow and often accumulate in the bloodstream. Adenomas are cancers that arise in the thyroid, the pituitary gland, the adrenal gland, and other glandular tissues.
    • farouk hamood

This is logos because it tells the facts about how cancer is classified.
  • Early detection of cancer can greatly improve the odds of successful treatment and survival. Physicians use information from symptoms and several other procedures to diagnose cancer. Imaging techniques such as X-rays, CT scans, MRI scans, PET scans, and ultrasound scans are used regularly in order to detect where a tumor is located and what organs may be affected by it. Doctors may also conduct an endoscopy, which is a procedure that uses a thin tube with a camera and light at one end, to look for abnormalities inside the body. Extracting cancer cells and looking at them under a microscope is the only absolute way to diagnose cancer. This procedure is called a biopsy. Other types of molecular diagnostic tests are frequently employed as well. Physicians will analyze your body's sugars, fats, proteins, and DNA at the molecular level. For example, cancerous prostate cells release a higher level of a chemical called PSA (prostate-specific antigen) into the bloodstream that can be detected by a blood test. Molecular diagnostics, biopsies, and imaging techniques are all used together to diagnose cancer.
    • farouk hamood

This is ethos because the information is clearly stated by a reliable source from the way they have put it.
  • Cancers that are closely linked to certain behaviors are the easiest to prevent. For example, choosing not to smoke tobacco or drink alcohol significantly lower the risk of several types of cancer - most notably lung, throat, mouth, and liver cancer. Even if you are a current tobacco user, quitting can still greatly reduce your chances of getting cancer. Skin cancer can be prevented by staying in the shade, protecting yourself with a hat and shirt when in the sun, and using sunscreen. Diet is also an important part of cancer prevention since what we eat has been linked to the disease. Physicians recommend diets that are low in fat and rich in fresh fruits and vegetables and whole grains. Certain vaccinations have been associated with the prevention of some cancers. For example, many women receive a vaccination for the human papillomavirus because of the virus's relationship with cervical cancer. Hepatitis B vaccines prevent the hepatitis B virus, which can cause liver cancer. Some cancer prevention is based on systematic screening in order to detect small irregularities or tumors as early as possible even if there are no clear symptoms present. Breast self-examination, mammograms, testicular self-examination, and Pap smears are common screening methods for various cancers.

One really important thing is that they use a white background and black text and the reason for that is because its proven that its the easiest to read and they would like for people to be able to read the context as much as possible. Also choosing the right combination of pictures and videos must have taken lots of time for them because its really important for them to target the right people.

How To Reduce Stress With Slow Breathing With Music - 1 views

  • The connection between our breathing and our emotions has been known since the earliest days of our ancestors. So have the links between our respiratory, circulatory and nervous systems.
    • salma moideen

Ethos: this is ethos, since the breathing affects certain aspects of health and well being which has been known since the days of our ancestors.
    • J.Randolph Radney

No, ethos would be an appeal to the credibility of the author.
  • Our response to music is universal. And relaxing to music is by no means just a matter of mood and "feel-good-factor". Recent research shows that external rhythms - such as music - do influence internal rhythms.
    • salma moideen

Logos: This logically shows that music is just not for relaxing but also the research proves that the music's external rhythm influence the internal rhythm.
  • In its role as a neurotransmitter in the brain it relays our thoughts and feelings such as joy, sadness, pain... and stress! It repairs our cells and fights infection and tumours to help us live longer and healthier... It can increase blood flow by up to 200%, which has numerous health benefits. Not least among them, it allows men to produce erections and heightens sexual stimulation for both sexes. The principle action of Viagra, by the way, is to raise nitric oxide levels... Increasing blood flow also improves the circulatory system by keeping blood vessels clear of plaque and other harmful build-up... Nitric oxide plays a major role in maintaining healthy blood pressure by signalling blood vessels to expand!
    • salma moideen

Pathos : this is pathos, since these actions helps to reduce stress and anxiety which influences the readers greatly.
    • J.Randolph Radney

Teaching in Social and Technological Networks « Connectivism - 0 views

  • Technological networks have transformed prominent businesses sectors: music, television, financial, manufacturing. Social networks, driven by technological networks, have similarly transformed communication, news, and personal interactions. Education sits at the social/technological nexus of change – primed for dramatic transformative change. In recent posts, I’ve argued for needed systemic innovation. I’d like focus more specifically on how teaching is impacted by social and technological networks.
  • social and technological networks subvert the classroom-based role of the teacher. Networks thin classroom walls. Experts are no longer “out there” or “over there”. Skype brings anyone, from anywhere, into a classroom. Students are not confined to interacting with only the ideas of a researcher or theorist. Instead, a student can interact directly with researchers through Twitter, blogs, Facebook, and listservs. The largely unitary voice of the traditional teacher is fragmented by the limitless conversation opportunities available in networks. When learners have control of the tools of conversation, they also control the conversations in which they choose to engage.
  • Course content is similarly fragmented. The textbook is now augmented with YouTube videos, online articles, simulations, Second Life builds, virtual museums, Diigo content trails, StumpleUpon reflections, and so on.
  • ...14 more annotations...
  • Thoughts, ideas, or messages that the teacher amplifies will generally have a greater probability of being seen by course participants.
  • The following are roles teacher play in networked learning environments: 1. Amplifying 2. Curating 3. Wayfinding and socially-driven sensemaking 4. Aggregating 5. Filtering 6. Modelling 7. Persistent presence
  • Views of teaching, of learner roles, of literacies, of expertise, of control, and of pedagogy are knotted together. Untying one requires untying the entire model.
  • Fortunately, the experience of wayfinding is now augmented by social systems.
  • I found my way through personal trial and error. Today’s social web is no different – we find our way through active exploration. Designers can aid the wayfinding process through consistency of design and functionality across various tools, but ultimately, it is the responsibility of the individual to click/fail/recoup and continue.
  • The curator, in a learning context, arranges key elements of a subject in such a manner that learners will “bump into” them throughout the course. Instead of explicitly stating “you must know this”, the curator includes critical course concepts in her dialogue with learners, her comments on blog posts, her in-class discussions, and in her personal reflections.
  • Sensemaking in complex environments is a social process.
  • Perhaps we need to spend more time in information abundant environments before we turn to aggregation as a means of making sense of the landscape.
  • magine a course where the fragmented conversations and content are analyzed (monitored) through a similar service. Instead of creating a structure of the course in advance of the students starting (the current model), course structure emerges through numerous fragmented interactions. “Intelligence” is applied after the content and interactions start, not before.
  • Aggregation should do the same – reveal the content and conversation structure of the course as it unfolds, rather than defining it in advance.
  • Filtering resources is an important educator role, but as noted already, effective filtering can be done through a combination of wayfinding, social sensemaking, and aggregation. But expertise still matters. Educators often have years or decades of experience in a field. As such, they are familiar with many of the concepts, pitfalls, confusions, and distractions that learners are likely to encounter.
  • To teach is to model and to demonstrate. To learn is to practice and to reflect.”
  • Apprenticeship learning models are among the most effective in attending to the full breadth of learning.
  • Without an online identity, you can’t connect with others – to know and be known. I don’t think I’m overstating the importance of have a presence in order to participate in networks. To teach well in networks – to weave a narrative of coherence with learners – requires a point of presence. As a course progresses, the teacher provides summary comments, synthesizes discussions, provides critical perspectives, and directs learners to resources they may not have encountered before.
  •
Here are some additional thoughts that relate to my teaching approach in courses.

A Conservative Choice for President | Michele Bachmann for President | MicheleBachmann.com - 0 views

  • Michele wants government to make the kind of serious spending decisions that many families and small businesses have been forced to make.
    • Alexander Condon

Here she is aligning herself with the middle-class which could serve to distinguish her from some of the other Republican candidates who have been critiqued for over-looking the middle-class. It also alludes to her dissatisfaction with recent government spending and bailout packages. She is siding with the everyday American who protested the extreme government spending amid the recession. Provides pathos as it shows her sense of financial responsibility and similarity with everyday Americans.
  • Michele is a leading advocate for tax reform, a staunch opponent of wasteful government spending, and a strong proponent of adherence to the Constitution, as intended by the Founding Fathers.
    • Alexander Condon

The sentence is elegantly written and effectively uses parallel structure which appeals to the audience's logic. The sentence concludes with a reference to the Founding Fathers which rouses nostalgia for the beginning of the United States. This nostalgia can be very affective as many Americans (especially Republicans) feel that government was best under the Founding Fathers. The Founding Fathers personify all that is great about being American-independence, democracy and strength. Founding Fathers also alludes to the joyous celebration of the Fourth of July (Independence Day) which provokes pathos. There is also a simile here as she compares herself to the Founding Fathers.
  • She is also a defender of the unborn and staunchly stands for religious liberties.
    • Alexander Condon

As " a defender of the unborn", Bachmann positions herself as pro-life. The phrase is a euphemism as it is a nicer way of saying against abortion. The second part of the sentence "staunchly stands for religious liberties" is likely a second euphemism stating her siding with the bible on topics such as same-sex marriage. Both stances develop ethos especially amongst Republicans and may also appeal to emotion as the topics are deeply personal.

  • In July 2010, Michele hosted the first Tea Party Caucus meeting. She is seen as a champion of Tea Party values
    • Alexander Condon

Here she positions herself of a leader of the Tea Party which adds considerable credibility (ethos) to her candidacy because of the Tea Party's considerable resources and growing popularity. It is important for Bachmann to identify herself as a leader as that is what people are voting for. Also note how the term "champion" is consistent with the website's continued emphasis on winning.
  • Michele and Marcus have five children, Lucas, Harrison, Elisa, Caroline, and Sophia. In addition, the Bachmann family has opened their home to 23 foster children
    • Alexander Condon

This sentence develops both ethos and pathos. Ethos as she is seen more reputable and trustworthy by having such a large and seemingly happy family. The main purpose here is pathos as she depicts herself as a loving and devoted humanitarian. She is portrayed here as a mother figure, someone responsible that can look after a large and diverse household (a metaphor for the United States?).This last statement develops a paradox between her portrayal throughout the passage as a tough candidate like one of the Founding Fathers, and her portrayal as a loving, responsible mother who can take care of the nation. Very Interesting.
  • Michele is the first Republican woman to be elected to the U.S. House of Representatives from Minnesota
    • Alexander Condon

Interestingly, this is the only line in the passage that directly points to Bachmann's uniqueness as a female candidate. Potential supporters who were unsure whether she could become the first female president will be reinforced by her being the first Republican elected to the House of Representatives from Minnesota. It achieves ethos as she becomes a more credible candidate as well as logos because "if she was the first woman from Minnesota than why can't she be the first woman president". For the female audience, it may also be pathos as she is seen as breaking down barriers to womens freedom.
  • Michele Bachmann is running for president to bring a new voice to the White House
    • Alexander Condon

The main use of rhetoric in Bachmann's opening line is "bring a new voice to the White House". The new voice rhetoric is very common among presidential candidates as it is a metaphor for change. Indirectly this new voice represents the possibility of correcting the current governmental problems. It appeals mostly to ethos as it could inspire hope in the audience.
  • She recognized the need for quality schools and subsequently started a charter school for at-‐risk kids in Minnesota.
    • Alexander Condon

The sentence develops ethos and pathos in the audience. Ethos as her character and reputation is bolstered by her emphasis on education. Pathos as she highlights having started a school for at-risk kids; specifying "at-risk kids" adds emotion to the description and depicts her as empathetic.
  • Serving on the Intelligence Committee, she has consistently advocated peace through strength to ensure America's national security. She has proudly taken a vow to support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic.
    • Alexander Condon

Here she states her stance on foreign policy. She successfully aligns herself with the Americans who seek an end to the War in Afghanistan by stating that "she has consistently advocated peace". Also she answers the critics who think she won't be tough enough by saying that "she has proudly taken a vow to support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies". She shows experience and ability by having served on the Intelligence Committee (logos). "Taking a vow" appeals to emotion as it carries the connotative meaning of commitment, dedication, and marriage.
    • Alexander Condon

The video introduction is a very persuasive addition to the website for several reasons:1. It provides a quick synopsis of the website that young voters and those pressed for time will greatly appreciate.2. Logos: She emphasizes having already been successful as a congresswoman. Describes herself as a hard-worker. Also note the attention to detail in having the message exactly one minute long.3. Ethos: She begins by establishing herself as an official candidate having done all the paperwork. Seems trustworthy through eye contact and fluent speech.4. Pathos:Talks about "taking your voice" to the White House and being a "winning team". Concludes by passionately telling viewers that "we can do this".
    • Alexander Condon

It's worth noting that she's wearing the exact same outfit from the picture in the top. This aspect is puzzles me, perhaps it's done to depict her as simple and relatable to the everyday American. Very interesting.
    • Alexander Condon

Argument/PurposeThe website is intended to convince Republican delegates and all other voting-age American citizens that Michele Bachmann should become the next US President and that they should vote for her.  Audience: The audience is voting-age Americans. It is not intended for Canadians or audiences from any other nationalities.
    • Alexander Condon

The picture depicts Bachmann as patriotic (the flag on her collar), conservative (seems to be conservatively dressed), and happy (the big smile-ethos). It's interesting that she's not looking at the camera but rather up and to the side. Might have been done because she looks better from this angle, or potentially to show her as ambitious and aspiring. -also note her husband's smiling picture located underneath the video. He is well-dressed (ethos) and again smiling (pathos). Showing that she's married also adds to her candidacy especially among the more conservative Republicans.
    • Alexander Condon

Bachmann logo found here at the top as well as at the very bottom serves to authenticate the document. It's symbolic of an official stamp or even the presidential seal. Of note are the stars (again the allusion to success and winning, as well as patriotic); the red, white, and blue classic American colours; and the red and white stripes through the 'H' in Bachmann which allude to the American flag. The authenticity of the stamp appeals to the logic (logos) of the viewer as well as adding to Bachmann's credibility (ethos). The patriotic symbolism appeals to the strong patriotic emotions of the visitors.
    • Alexander Condon

The page is entitled "A Conservative Choice for President | Michele Bachmann for President". It is significant because Michele is a Republican candidate and the party is built on conservatism. She is evoking ethos as stressing herself as a "Conservative Choice" establishes her as a good fit for the party.
    • Alexander Condon

The page exhibits a red, white, and blue theme. These symbolic American colours are used to evoke both pathos and ethos in visitors. Pathos as the colours appeal to emotions by giving American's a comforting patriotic feeling. Ethos as the colours help develop Bachmann's character as patriotic, loyal, and trust worthy. The colours also make it nice to read as they provide visual continuity.
    • Alexander Condon

also of note are the American flags hanging down from both sides which could be metaphoric of the hanging flags during the presidential inauguration
    • Alexander Condon

Notice how she puts social media options: email, texting, facebook, right at the top of the page where they will be seen by most visitors. This increases the accessibility to her site and updates and will be welcomed by younger voters especially. It also shows her as technically savvy and in-touch with the latest in technology (ethos).
    • Alexander Condon

It's interesting the attention being payed to social media in the wake of Obama being so effective using these tools in the last election
    • Alexander Condon

Another purpose of the site is to bring in donations from supporters to fund her campaigning. Notice how the donate button is coloured red so to stand out and draw attention. The red colour actually makes the audience want to click it, especially as it stands out from the other white tabs. It's that red button that we all want to press.
    • Alexander Condon

Pictures of Bachmann speaking with people in the community are persuasive by developing logos, ethos, and pathos. Logos: seeing her speaking with seemingly everyday people adds support to her claims of being "the voice of the people". Ethos: the pictures make her appear more trustworthy and reputable. especially the picture of her shaking a woman's handPathos: She is again smiling in the pictures which evokes happiness. She is also photographed speaking with hand gestures which shows passion.
    • Alexander Condon

Notice the applauding crowd in the background; the viewer assumes that the crowd is applauding for Bachmann and this provokes ethos as her credibility is enhanced by the image. It is also potentially pathos as it can be seen as a metaphoric image of a crowd during a (presidential) victory speech. The symbolic image of the victory speech evokes happy emotions of winning; relate it back to the video where she calls it "a winning team".
    • Alexander Condon

the audience almost seems to be looking up and towards the webpage, as if applauding Bachmann's message
  • she spent five years as a federal tax litigation attorney, working on hundreds of civil and criminal cases. That experience solidified her strong support for efforts to simplify the Tax Code and reduce tax burdens on family and small business budgets.
    • Alexander Condon

Here she documents her considerable experience with the tax system (logos). It serves to back her claims at being able to reform the tax system. Also we again see her aligning with the middle-class.

Add a proper video showing how these CD's actually work on person. it will help to impress and get the attention of the audience more.
  • "Science Meets Nature" - not just a meaningless marketing slogan! The BreathEasy System merges ancient, natural healing arts with clinical science to create a genuine breakthrough in stress management: lasting stress relief.

Pathos: This is pathos, trying to persuade the audience in a pshycological approach.
    • J.Randolph Radney

I don't agree with your analysis here. Pathos is an appeal to emotion.
  • That's how Breatheasy user Dr. George Szczerbaniuk puts it. The Breatheasy soundtrack contains a pleasant and natural-sounding breathing track (actually created from an ocean wave) actually woven into the fabric of the music. The breathing track gently and gradually slows your breathing from the overly tense and fast way we tend to breathe down to the slow and precise pattern proven to relieve chronic stress and anxiety and even reduce high blood pressure.

  • And stress is not just a rotten feeling that makes us and those around us feel miserable. Chronic and severe stress is a killer. It provokes the release of harmful hormones like cortisol that attack and weaken our natural defenses. Cortisol can even penetrate a mother's womb to harm her unborn child.

what is yoga? types of yoga, videos & more | lululemon athletica - 2 views

shared by Jovan Gill on 03 Dec 10 - No Cached
  • Yoga energizes our bodies and calms our minds.
    • Jovan Gill

This simple statement is very powerful. By claiming that yoga energizes our bodies and clams our minds will appeal to many people, as everyone wants peace of mind and an energized body.
  • yoga quickguide
    • Jovan Gill

A quick and easy description of the different types of yoga is a definite attraction. One doesn't have to read the complete pararaphs below to get small description about the various types of yoga. One can also find out what types they are interested in and then read in further detail about those certain types.
    • Jovan Gill

The video showcases a certain type of yoga, which catches the eye and appeal of those watching. If you watch some of the video you can't help but wonder what it would be like to try antigravity yoga, and how much a hammock could make a diffeerence in your stretching compared to just the sterotypical on the ground yoga.
  • ...9 more annotations...
  • This practice is very athletic and made up of six vigorous series of postures
    • Jovan Gill

This type of yoga attracts those who are looking for a high intensity workout, and maybe did not expect that yoga could be a very athletic activity.By putting very athletic and vigourous in the same sentence a picture of a tough but appealing activity comes to mind, well appealing for those who want a intense workout.
  • Heads up - humidity is 40% and will knock you over the first time.
    • Jovan Gill

By saying that the humdity will knock you out the first time, the reader knows that this type of yoga is not for those who are looking for a leisurely activity. It attracts those to it by clearly saying "Heads up", which implies an important point that should likely not be missed.
  • By adding heat it is said that classes will help you lose weight, loosen your muscles (by adding increased range of motion) and improve your cardiovascular system.
    • Jovan Gill

By simply adding heat to yoga, so much more is achieved from exercises. Many people do yoga in order to lose weight, and by adding heat that goal can be achieved all the much easier.
  • Don't be surprised if your waving your hands like you just don't care or laughing uncontrollably, this practice is intended to wake up the kundalini energy coiled at the base of your spine while activating chakras (energetic centers in the body), as well as detox the body and mind.
    • Jovan Gill

This paragraph gives a different aspect of yoga that most people don't think about. "Laughing uncontrollably" and "waving your hands like you just don't care" imply a fun and energetic workout, which attracts anyone that wants to have a good time. It's a great thing that kundalini yoga awakens the energy coiled up at the base of your spine. So you get energized and receive a detoxification of the body and mind.
  • Remember: your body is your best guide. You don't have to stick to one kind of yoga, just do what your body needs!
    • Jovan Gill

This sentence relieves any tension or stress one may feel when they are thinking about taking up yoga. It tells the reader that if you don't feel right about doing a certain type of yoga, try a different kind. There is no pressure to keep up with the same type of yoga if your body doesn't feel right doing it. This lessens the anxiety most people feel when they are considering taking up a new activity.
    • Jovan Gill

In this picture a sense of community is felt. The many legs with black yoga pants on top of the colourful yoga mats with a sunset in the background give a sense of happiness and belonging. Everyone is doing the same pose which shows that anyone can do yoga. Since only legs are shown and no faces or bodies, it implies that it doesn't matter what race, age, sex or athletic ability you are, anyone can participate in yoga and become a part of a community while getting healthier.
    • Jovan Gill

In this picture the bright colours of the woman's clothing and the prop that is helping her with her yoga poses immediately grabs the attention of the reader. Her closed eyes imply a relaxed state, which shows that props help enhance a peace of mind and serenity.
    • Jovan Gill

The lush green field with the three people doing a sun salutation makes most people want to be there and do yoga. The bright sunlight in the video, with a luscious green field act as a open invitation to those who want to practice yoga. And in this video they are teaching the perfect exercise for that scenery, the sun salutation.
    • Jovan Gill

The light pink/peachish colour brings the readers attention to this quote. On a page that is full of black text on a white background our eyes are drawn to the saying which sticks out like a sore thumb on the web page. Also the swirly type text pulls in the reader, since the rest of the page has a standard text that is easy to read but not nearly as appealing. This quote changes everytime one opens the page, and it is also a part of the lululemon manifesto. These quotes appear on many pages of the site, and they are the attention grabing text on every page.

Learn about | Greenpeace Canada - 0 views

  • The ocean may look calm and serene, but beneath the surface is a different story. Around the world, our oceans are in crisis. Decades of industrial fishing have taken a massive toll on marine ecosystems, yet our appetite for seafood has never been so great. Even the deep and remote areas that once served as refuges from fishing are no longer safe havens; today the fish have no place to hide.
    • Sergio Lourenco

This selection is using pathos because it uses words such as crisis and refuges which might make someone feel saddened to know what is happening to fish.
  • We have a responsibility to protect our oceans for future generations. To help supermarkets and consumers make better seafood purchasing choices, Greenpeace has created a Redlist of the 15 most destructively fished or farmed species, including Atlantic cod, tropical shrimp and some tuna. (Click here for the complete Redlist.) Greenpeace wants supermarkets to stop stocking Redlisted species and develop sustainable seafood policies. The fish on the Redlist are there because fishery and/or production methods have negative impacts on the target species and/or other marine species, lead to ecosystem alterations, have social implications or are poorly managed or corrupt. Each Redlist fish went through the Greenpeace red-grade criteria — one for wild species and one for farmed. During the ongoing assessment process, Greenpeace reviews the most recent scientific research relating to each stock or aquaculture system, scrutinizes government sources and consults grading schemes used by other organizations.
    • Sergio Lourenco

This selection is an example of logos because through this style of writing, the author tries to pursuade the reader by telling them about the things that happen to marine species including things like fishery and production methods.
  • Greenpeace believes the only way to allow our oceans to recover and ensure there are fish for the future is to stop overfishing and destructive practices such as bottom trawling and dredging, while protecting our polar oceans and setting aside no-take areas in marine reserves to safeguard against growing threats from climate change and ocean acidification. In Canada and around the world, progress in marine protection has been slow. Greenpeace is working to step up the pace by lobbying governments and industry.
    • Sergio Lourenco

      Another example of logos

  • From coast to coast, Canadians are witnessing ocean mismanagement firsthand. Cod have all but vanished on the East Coast, and on the West Coast, millions of Sockeye salmon have disappeared from the Fraser River. On a global scale, this mismanagement is magnified, with less than one per cent of the world’s oceans protected, and species such as bluefin tuna and sharks nearing the point of complete collapse. More than 90 per cent of large predatory species such as tuna, cod and swordfish have vanished from our oceans. On harmful longlines set out for swordfish, sea turtles are being slaughtered by the thousands — innocent victims of irresponsible ocean management and a lack of proper regulation.
    • Sergio Lourenco

This selection shows ethos and pathos being used. They use facts to try and appeal to someone's emotion and by using facts and stats they also try to show the wrongdoing of government regulations.

Muscle Hack - Home of Muscle Growth - 2 views

The website is complete with a navigational tool bar at the top of the page, very helpful for keeping track of where you'd like to be in the website.
    • Elias Rumley

Another navigational standard just beneath the navigational tool bar is the search bar. Quick and easy to find information pertaining to a specific topic.
  • Home of Muscle Growth
    • Elias Rumley

MuscleHack has two main slogans, the highlighted one being "Home of Muscle Growth" and the one in the logo being "Mor Muscle, Less Fat, Less Time." Mark McManus, the blogger who maintains MuscleHack, makes it clear right away that this is a website dedicated to shedding off as much fat and putting on as much muscle in as little time as possible.
    • Elias Rumley

These slogans also suggest (and this can be verified by reading a few blog posts) that Mark very firmly believes that his information contained in this blog is the best (and possibly only) way to safely put on muscle quickly.
  • Muscle growth, which is sometimes called  ‘muscle hypertrophy‘, is what this site is all about. Yes there are thousands of different training systems out there, but this one is designed SPECIFICALLY to make your muscles larger – PERIOD!
    • Elias Rumley

Note the first three paragraphs. "... MuscleHack, the home of muscle growth." "If you want to learn how to build muscle fast, MuscleHack is THE place to be." "... this [training program] is designed SPECIFICALLY to make your muscles larger - PERIOD!" Immediately, the blogger uses repetition (in conjunction with the slogans) to get it clear that this website is entirely about muscle gain, no questions asked.

To give the option to bloggers to keep informed and up-to-date on any new blog posts or pieces of information, there is an option to subscribe to an RSS feed.
  • I will NEVER sell out. I will NEVER recommend a product I don’t personally believe in. I will NEVER share your email address with ANYONE. I will NEVER try to sell you something you don’t need. I WILL keep the vast majority of everything I do FREE of charge.
    • Elias Rumley

This section was preceded by the heading "Mark's promise to you". This entire bulleted list is an example of Ethos, where Mark is trying to prove that all the information provided on the blog is genuine, and that there is no scam or illegitimacy in being involved with this blog.
  • Want FREE help and advice?
    • Elias Rumley

A search over the website shows that the term "free" appears 9 times on this page. Apparently Mark wants to be very clear that there is no risk in following his blog, as everything here is free. In a sense, it's Logo. This blog is free, and as proven earlier, will not scam you or abuse your information; therefore, you should have no reason to not follow this blog.
    • Elias Rumley

For Mark to still turn a profit on this blog, he has some blatant advertisements through Amazon.com posted on the blog. While he probably recommends all these products, this is also his source of income.
  • The Muscle Hacker is Mark McManus, a 29 year old Certified Fitness Instructor committed to helping others build the body of their dreams. Mark is a naturally skinny guy who overcame the hardgainer's curse through years of research and personal experience. Whether you want to build new slabs of muscle or drop your body fat percentage to reveal chiseled abs, Mark CAN make it happen for you.
    • Elias Rumley

Mark uses Ethos by claiming he is a Certified Fitness Instructor, who was a "hardgainer" (ie, a skinny or slim male who has difficulty in developing muscle) who overcame this barrier; therefore, he must have the credentials to help you gain muscle also.
    • Elias Rumley

Mark also uses Pathos, by stating his commitment to helping others build the body of their dreams and making your fitness goals happen for you. The suggestion is that Mark wants to help you become fit.
    • Elias Rumley

Near the top of the page, you have an opportunity to "grap a copy of Mark's FREE book". I have personally looked into this myself, and what it doesn't tell you is that this is that you end up the mailing list by asking for this book. While it is very easy to withdraw from the mailing list, it is a clever trick to get you to come back to this website at least once to remove yourself from the list. Mark may realize that one return to his website could be enough to keep you coming back for more out of curiosity, something he as a blogger wants out of readers.
    • Elias Rumley

The website is riddled with pictures of muscular men. This is an appeal to men who want to have that physical appearance. The pictures are an attempt to subconsciously plant the (inaccurate) logic of "If I read this blog, I will look like these men" in the minds of certain readers.
    • Elias Rumley

Another side note about these pictures - most of them are actually of Mark, trying to convince the reader that this blogger has seen results with his own information, and so must have some sort of credibility (Ethos).
    • Elias Rumley

To provide an outlet for users to passively advertise MuscleHack, users have the option to like MuscleHack on Facebook. The ideology behind this is that this act of liking MuscleHack will result in a post in Facebook's news feed, resulting in the possibility of Mark receiving a new reader from a curious Facebooker.
    • Elias Rumley

Mark also provides other means to share MuscleHack. Ultimately, to obtain new readers.
  • MuscleHack is the genuine article (unlike most other sites out there). You CAN have your dream body, and it would be my privilege to coach you to success!
    • Elias Rumley

In the concluding line of the "front-matter" to this website, Mark makes one more stab at using Ethos and Pathos. MuscleHack is genuine (Ethos), and Mark would be pleased to help you reach your dream body (Pathos).
    • Elias Rumley

It's not a major thing, but it is still worth noticing that Mark generously uses font formatting to his advantage in his writing. Headings and sub-headings have different size and style of font. Points which call for extra attention in the body writing are written in red to draw in readers.
  • Donate To MuscleHack
    • Elias Rumley

Mark either wants or needs money in order to keep MuscleHack online, so whatever finances he can't get from his own work or advertising, he needs to get from other sources, and donations from readers are an excellent thing to try.
  • Get Your Body Fat Percentage
    • Elias Rumley

I find it interesting how the homepage has a cool little applet like a body-fat-calculator on the sit of the page. I am willing to bet that this is put there in order to boost the amount of hits for this page. Somebody can suggest to their friend, "Check out Musclehack.com, there's this body fat calculator on the homepage that you may find useful!" Mark is hoping that these readers who stopped by for the litlle gizmo may stay as permanent blog followers.

Stanford Students Start Their Own Course-Management Web Site - Wired Campus - The Chron... - 0 views

  • A student-run Web site at Stanford University seeks to convince students to input their class assignments to keep themselves—and their classmates—more organized. It could, founders hope, grow into a student-run course-management system.
  • Once one student adds an assignment in a class, everyone else in the class has it added to their calendars, as well. Ultimately, he’d like to expand the site to include social events on campus, to help students better plan every aspect of their lives. He also plans to allow students to flag incorrect assignments.

Challenge Nike and adidas to cut the chemicals and detox our water - 2 views

During a recent investigation, Greenpeace identified several major international clothing brands, including the sports giants adidas and Nike, linked to facilities in China that are releasing toxic chemicals into our water. Unfortunately, these facilities are just the tip of the iceberg. Across many countries, hazardous  chemicals are being released into our precious waterways, poisoning our water and threatening people and wildlife.Like any

  • As much as 70 percent of China's rivers, lakes and reservoirs are affected by water pollution. During our recent investigations, Greenpeace identified links between a number of major clothing brands and textile factories in China that are releasing hazardous chemicals into our rivers. These chemicals are a serious threat to human health and the environment. Some are known hormone disruptors, whilst others can affect the reproductive system. Many of them don't break down in the environment, but instead build up in the bodies of animals and humans.

As these chemical do not break down, we are now conscious of the fact that their presence is going to be a long term problem. Furthermore, Greenpeace states that these chemicals disrupt hormone function, making the situation more real and personal. Lastly, Greenpeace makes this issue hit home and persuades the reader to realize that this is not just an issue in China. Rather, across the ocean in North America, we too are affected by the use and release of these chemicals into water. The statement that these chemicals have been detected in polar bears makes the reader realize and question whether is it in our water as well
