I certainly didn't mean to suggest that transcendent experiences are "beyond the purview of science." On the contrary, I think they should be studied scientifically. And I don't believe that these experiences tell us anything about the cosmos (I called Deepak Chopra a "charlatan" for making unfounded claims of this sort). Nor do they tell us anything about history, or about the veracity of scripture. However, these experiences do have a lot to say about the nature of the human mind-not about its neurobiology, per se, but about its qualitative character (both actual and potential). So, to answer Jerry's question: yes, many things follow from these transcendent experiences. Here's a short list:

Vorbestrafte werden häufiger schuldig gesprochen. «Solche Urteilsschlüsse verstossen gegen gesetzliche Regeln und ethische Prinzipien», sagt die Psychologieprofessorin Margit Oswald von der Universität Bern, die solche nicht-legalen Einflüsse untersucht. So erschreckend das klingen mag, so zeigt es auch, dass wir von den meisten Beeinflussungsversuchen nichts mitbekommen. Menschen und ihre Bot­schaften manipulieren wirkungsvoll unser Unbewusstes."

Psychologen fasziniert schon lange, wie homogen es in Freundesgruppen zugeht. In der Schule, am Arbeitsplatz, im Sportverein, im Internet - stets tun sich Menschen zusammen, die viele Haltungen und Geschmäcker miteinander teilen. Warum das so ist, war bislang nicht schlüssig geklärt. Eine Theorie lautet, dass Menschen sich bevorzugt mit solchen Zeitgenossen anfreunden, mit denen sie viele Dinge gemeinsam haben. Eine alternative Erklärung für die Ähnlichkeit unter Freunden ist ein Phänomen, das Netzwerktheoretiker als Ansteckung bezeichnen. Ansichten und Geschmäcker breiten sich demnach unter Freunden ähnlich aus wie Krankheitserreger. Ein amerikanisches Forscherteam hat dieses Henne-Ei-Problem der Freundschaftstheorie nun in einer aufwendigen Studie auf der Plattform Facebook untersucht. Das Team um Kevin Lewis von der Harvard University in Cambridge verfolgte die Entwicklung von 1640 Studenten verschiedener US-Colleges über einen Zeitraum von vier Jahren."
