    This was a great radio documentary that aired this Sunday on WPSU. Did anyone else catch it? Really great info about how professors are changing the ways they teach, moving away from lectures to techniques like peer instruction even in large classes. I was also excited to hear it mention the classroom idea we are implementing in the Knowledge Commons in the library. A classroom where there is no "front" as another way to change up traditional teaching.

  • Evolving the E-Portfolio at Penn State By Bridget McCrea04/06/11 Pennsylvania State University's foray into e-portfolios started about 10 years ago, when static Web pages were used to store and display online versions of student resumes. Fairly innovative for their time, these early e-portfolios gave way to more dynamic versions of themselves a few years back as the university began rolling in Web 2.0 technologies. "When blogs, social networking and other interactive technologies came along, we tweaked our e-portfolio initiative," said Jeff Swain, innovation consultant for the university. "We wanted students to be able to develop interactive, online portfolios that would be able to stay and grow with them throughout their college careers, and beyond."

    Video on this site shows an interface that reminds me of Authorware back in the day - drag and drop visual programming. Could be an interesting part of a student programming project or our work with Jansen. I wonder if something like this exists for the iOS.

    I had some people in my class play around with this last spring, it seems straightforward (if you own an Android phone, which limited most of my students). I showed this to the faculty running the Erie game certificate program, and they were trying to figure out a way they might expose students to it to build some games. Certainly simplifies mobile, entry-level app development.

    Sam Sennott created an app that helps some autistic and non-verbal people communicate using the touch screen and a series of pictures. He happens to be a PhD student at Penn State in the Special Education program.

Blogsy for iPad on the iTunes App Store - 2 views

  • Blogsy is a tool designed specifically to take full advantage of the iPad’s unique touch functionality. Adding your photos and videos is as easy as dragging them from the media sidebar and dropping them into your blog post.

    It doesn't look like this works with MT. It only gives you the option of setting up a wordpress site or a blogger site. I thought I might be able to trick it use blogs@psu as a wordpress site, but no luck. I haven't had the chance to try it with a wordpress blog yet. The demo movies look like there is tons of great functionality here, but the interface is a bit complicated.

    So I've finally got around to testing this. Every time I tried to add a wordpress blog hosted at dream host it crashed even though the wordpress app worked. Maybe it can't deal with me having multiple blogs.

  • What did Capecchi do? He took the NIH's money, and, ignoring their admonitions, he poured almost all of it into his risky gene-targeting project. It was, he recalls, a big gamble. If he hadn't been able to show strong enough initial results in the three-to-five-year time scale demanded by the NIH, they would have cut off his funding. Without their seal of approval, he might have found it hard to get funding from elsewhere. His career would have been severely set back, his research assistants looking for other work. His laboratory might not have survived.In 2007, Mario Capecchi was awarded the Nobel Prize for Medicine for this work on mouse genes. As the NIH's expert panel had earlier admitted, when agreeing to renew his funding: "We are glad you didn't follow our advice."
  • Whichever way they sliced the data, Azoulay, Manzo and Zivin found evidence that the more open-ended, risky HHMI grants were funding the most important, unusual, and influential research. HHMI researchers, apparently no better qualified than their NIH-funded peers, were far more influential, producing twice as many highly cited research articles. They were more likely to win awards and more likely to train students who themselves won awards.

  • The printing press brought about a radical change. People began getting their information primarily by seeing it -the printed word. The visual sense became dominant. Print translates one sense-hearing, the spoken word-into another sense sight, the printed word. Print also converts sounds into abstract symbols, the letters. Print is or derly progression of abstract, visual symbols. Print led to the habit of categorizing-putting everything in order, into categories, "jobs," "prices," "departments," "bureaus," "specialties." Print led, ultimately, to the creation of the modern economy, to bureaucracy, to the modern army, to nationalism itself.
  • People today think of print as if it were a technology that has been around forever. Actually, the widespread use of print is only about two hundred years old. Today new technologies-television, radio, the telephone, the computer-are causing another revolution. Print caused an "explosion"-breaking society up into categories. The electronic media, on the other hand, are causing an "implosion," forcing people back together in a tribal unity.

    I think Stuart Selber would disagree with many of the limitations pointed out in this article. Most of the criticisms can be easily overcome with an app or accessory such as a stylus, bluetooth keyboard, or an app like iAnnotate. The people who were interviewed may have lacked the support of a good technologist.

By going out and running in the real world, you can collect medicine, ammo, batteries, and spare parts that you can use to build up and expand your base - all while getting orders, clues, and story through your headphones."

    Interesting concept: you play this game by running in the real world. The app tracks your run, but also unlocks items (ammo, vitamins, medical supplies). When you're done, you get to distribute those supplies throughout your city. During the run, there is an interactive experience where you're being chased by zombies and getting instructions through your headset. They're releasing this next year. I'll definitely try it out.

  • Watch Out for Zombies The job of updating a Facebook page or Twitter account for a university department is often assigned to a student worker. When the academic year ends and that student has graduated or moved on to another job, though, those pages may stand lifeless, creating a kind of zombie online presence. "If it's not active, it's detrimental," says Erin Dougherty, who recently became Endicott College's first digital-marketing coordinator. "It just sort of turns people off if you're a visitor to go to something that hasn't been updated in a long time." Ms. Dougherty is hunting for zombie accounts on the campus and either recommending they be spiked or finding a permanent point person or group to make sure each one has a pulse.

    Nothing earth shattering, but I do find the "zombie" section extremely accurate. Getting people to keep the social spaces alive with content seems to be a big issue (at least with SITE, likely with others as well).
