Students are allocated 110 subsidized sheets each semester, paid for by the Information Technology fee. You may purchase more sheets at any time.

At Penn State University, Director of Education Technology Services Allan Gyorke said the former student staple is now rarely spotted in dorm rooms. "The desktop PC is dead," Gyorke said, estimating that 95 percent of students now bring a laptop or tablet media device to campus instead of using a traditional PC in their dorm room. Those newer devices, he said, are easier to store and easier to set up.

While the attention of many was focused on the annual BookExpo America (BEA) hoopla this week, there were some interesting developments taking place in the digital textbook space.

Advanced capture technology has become almost ubiquitous in higher education: If your institution doesn't have it, chances are that you're trailing the competition. Students want it. Tech-savvy teachers like it. And blended learning environments practically demand it.

"At Penn State, we needed a clicker system that was both easy to use and flexible enough to support our wide-ranging teaching methodologies," said Dave Test, a member of the university's technology classroom support organization. "With i>clicker, our faculty can easily implement clickers into their courses, adding myriad engagement opportunities with their students, but without the steep learning curve that we've experienced in the past. i>clicker gives us rock solid reliability and all of the features we need, without all of the headaches of other clicker systems."

What would you say if I told you that there's a new introductory biology textbook being published that is affordable, lightweight and never goes out of date?

This is undoubtedly a good idea, but it’s not the full picture of what needs to happen. What’s the answer? Rather than having different sites for each format, the way forward is to have designs that work equally as well on a tablet/touch format as they do on your laptop.

After months (okay, maybe weeks) of planning, I’m excited to announce the introduction of the College of the Liberal Arts iPad Summer Research Project (CLAISRP?  Perhaps this is an initiative that is better left without an acronym.) We in the Liberal Arts are already exploring the utility of the iPad for classroom use, thanks to the efforts of Stuart Selber.

So, why are they so involved in social media? Geoff Halberstadt, undergraduate student in the College of the Liberal Arts, said that social media has reached the point where it cannot be ignored. Students are heavily engaged in social media, and it is a primary method of communication for them. “Students live in an age of technology, an instantaneous age, and they want information now,” Halberstadt said. “The College can truly engage students by providing instant information.”
