    Very interesting. The screencast is helpful in understanding how they automated the connection between Google Docs and WordPress. I'm going to send this to Matt to make sure he sees it.

    They definitely take it to the next level with the API from Gdocs into WordPress. Could be an interesting 'meth lab' experiment. The other big piece to such a system would be the media management integration element. Very cool stuff.

    From the technical side, this is music to my ears given the bad place we are with some other of our other CMSes: "WordPress has a great API and it's very extendable - we've been able to easily change pretty much any part of the CMS without hacking the core, which allows us to maintain the integrity of the system."

    It doesn't look like this works with MT. It only gives you the option of setting up a wordpress site or a blogger site. I thought I might be able to trick it use blogs@psu as a wordpress site, but no luck. I haven't had the chance to try it with a wordpress blog yet. The demo movies look like there is tons of great functionality here, but the interface is a bit complicated.

    So I've finally got around to testing this. Every time I tried to add a wordpress blog hosted at dream host it crashed even though the wordpress app worked. Maybe it can't deal with me having multiple blogs.

  • A free online course at Stanford University on artificial intelligence, to be taught this fall by two leading experts from Silicon Valley, has attracted more than 58,000 students around the globe — a class nearly four times the size of Stanford’s entire student body.
  • The three online courses, which will employ both streaming Internet video and interactive technologies for quizzes and grading, have in the past been taught to smaller groups of Stanford students in campus lecture halls. Last year, for example, Introduction to Artificial Intelligence drew 177 students.
  • How will the artificial intelligence instructors grade 58,000 students? The scientists said they would make extensive use of technology. “We have a system running on the Amazon cloud, so we think it will hold up,” Dr. Norvig said.

  • Dr. Widom said that having Stanford courses freely available could both assist and compete with other colleges and universities. A small college might not have the faculty members to offer a particular course, but could supplement its offerings with the Stanford lectures.

  • At 7.5 million users, Weebly doesn't have the size or visibility of platforms like Tumblr (more than 25 million blogs) or WordPress (about 54 million). But Weebly, which tries to make it cheap and easy for businesses to create their own websites, now powers 2 percent of the Internet, according to research firm Netcraft.
  • They did it using a "freemium" model, giving away most services at no cost but charging for additional features.
  • Veltri, the chief operating officer, says that 51 percent of businesses still don't have a Web presence.

    Interesting for a few reasons. This was an IST class project in 2007 or 08, that led to 3 PSU students dropping out of school and driving across country to chase funding. They are also using the freemium model, a model that a lot of game companies adopted to turn net-loss IPs into profitable IPs the last few years. Finally, the stat "51% of business don't have a web presence" is surprising. I know a lot of small business don't have a presence (I'm looking at you, Watkins Glen hotels and wineries!), but 51% seems high.
