UK Parliament - Commons Select Commitee, 10/09/13 The Government's commitment to increasing access to published research findings, and its desire to achieve full open access, are welcome, says the Business, Innovation and Skills Committee in a Report published today. However, whilst Gold open access is a desirable ultimate goal, focusing on it during the transition to a fully open access world is a mistake, says the Report.

MOOCs must move beyond open enrolment and demonstrate a true commitment to reuse and lo... - 0 views

07/03/14 In contrast with the type of openness encouraged by Open Education Resources and Open Courseware labels, the openness of Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) is severely limited. Consequently, Leo Havemann and Javiera Atenas find the recent growth of high quality online learning content is not able to be used to its full advantage. The process of opening up MOOC resources would add value to the resources by reaching a wider community. But most importantly, HE institutions currently investing in MOOCs could demonstrate, beyond reasonable doubt, their real commitment to openness and improved access to education for all.

Tautology, antithesis, rallying cry, or business model? "Open science" is open to inter... - 0 views

by Benedikt Fecher & Tony Ross-Hellauer - Impact of Social Sciences - 25/01/18 Openness is deeply rooted in how science understands itself. The shoulders of giants upon which Newton saw future generations standing continue to bring us all closer to understanding. More broadly, "open" is a key ingredient of narratives of the digital sphere. Just as in open source software, the prefix denotes a dissolution of a formerly linear and closed production mode in favour of an accessible, decentralised, and loosely coupled system.

Knowledge Unlatched:A Global Library Consortium Model for Funding Open Access Scholarly... - 0 views

  •
by Lucy Montgomery - Cltural Science, vol.7:n°2, 2014 This special issue of Cultural Science Journal is devoted to the report of a groundbreaking experiment in re-coordinating global markets for specialist scholarly books and enabling the knowledge commons: the Knowledge Unlatched proof-of-concept pilot. The pilot took place between January 2012 and September 2014. It involved libraries, publishers, authors, readers and research funders in the process of developing and testing a global library consortium model for supporting Open Access books. The experiment established that authors, librarians, publishers and research funding agencies can work together in powerful new ways to enable open access; that doing so is cost effective; and that a global library consortium model has the potential dramatically to widen access to the knowledge and ideas contained in book-length scholarly works. Eve, Martin Paul - Cambridge University Press, 2014 - Ful text pdf URL If you work in a university, it is likely that you have heard the term "open access" in the past couple of years. You may also have heard either that it is the utopian answer to all the problems of research dissemination or perhaps that it marks the beginning of an apocalyptic new era of pay-to-say publishing. In this book, Dr. Martin Paul Eve sets out the histories, contexts and controversies for open access, specifically in the humanities

Stop shielding early-career researchers from open access - limiting wider involvement w... - 0 views

  •
by Samuel Moore, 23/08/15 The competitive nature of scholarship and the precariousness of academic employment is what currently hinders early-career researchers, not open access publishing. Rather than warning researchers of the dangers of confronting outdated and proprietary forms of scholarship, all should be engaged in questioning the practices that perpetuate the broken system,

Edito : dossier spécial Open Access | Lettres Numériques - 0 views

  •
