    Virtual Worlds Forum blog Exclusive Report: Tweens and Virtual Worlds Comments [0] | 14 October 2008 Dubit Research has produced an exclusive report for the Virtual Worlds Forum giving key statistics for how tweens use virtual worlds and their attitude towards advertising. Dubit Research, a youth marketing agency, runs a standing panel of 600 7-12 year olds in the UK, and has asked them a series of questions relating to which virtual worlds they use and how they feel about advertising in virtual worlds. The results show that 73% of British 7-12 year olds are using some sort of virtual world. Club Penguin leads the pack with 43%, Habbo following with 27%. There is remarkably little fragmentation in the market: only 8% use a virtual world other than the top 10. What surprised me most about the statistics is how even the gender split is on many virtual worlds - entirely even on Club Penguin, and similar on most other games, although Runescape is, as one would expect, far more popular with boys.

    Problem-Based Learning (PBL) seeks to produce learners who not only remember the theory, they know how and when to apply it. However, providing a problem to a group of students is not a guarantee that they will be able to solve it. Even more uncertain is whether the solution the students offer and the journey they undertook to arrive at it resulted in them learning the intended underlying concepts and theories. As students become increasingly time poor, they are less inclined towards a learning approach which requires them to be self-directed and motivated. This paper reports on a learning design which seeks to scaffold and accelerate the PBL process by providing a balance of facts and concepts to be remembered and tested via an online quiz, followed by an activity-based tutorial session that focussed on the application of those concepts to new problems in conjunction with the use of resource material and memory aids

    The Original online adventure games were text adventure games in which you were faced with puzzles and obstacles to overcome to complete your quest. They existed only on large corporate or academic mainframe computers in the 1970s. In the early 1980s these intriguing games became available to a much wider audience as classic adventures such as 'The Hobbit' fuelled sales of the first home computers such as the Commodore 64 and the Sinclair Spectrum. Since then online adventure games have evolved into multiuser games (generically known as MUDS) and are infinitely more challenging than the original adventure game designers could ever have dreamed. Many players share the same environment and adventure alongside you or compete against you as the whim takes them. The linear nature of the old adventure games has now mostly disappeared and the best of the new generation of online text adventure games are multi-dimensional in their game play and may be better described, perhaps, as interactive novels - often without end. A few highly commercial multiuser graphical adventures games are also now available, but they tend to lack depth and none are yet rated here.
