Templates and guides that accompany W. Horton's book.

There is a lot of good information here. Some of it is old. In some cases, that may matter and in other cases, it may not. I downloaded a couple of things. I hope he does some updates.

It seems to me like this site is the gold standard for all PM resources and we should all become familiar with what they offer.

School Project Management Search - 2 views

  •
I came across this and looked at it just because it had a unique name, but when I opened it, it is actually helpful. It is a search engine to help you search the topic at hand. There are several links (including a free booklet) on project management.

Zoho Projects - 1 views

This is a web based project management tool that functions similarly to Smartsheet. There are a lot of bells and whistles, and it seems to be priced affordably starting at $20 a month. You can then pick and choose add on features for nominal pricing - choosing what you want and not having to pay for features you may not use. Managers can list milestones, tasks, subtasks, generate Gantt charts and resource charts, communicate using wikis, chats and forums and collaborate with others synchronously or asynchronously. Another neat feature is this cloud hosted technology integrates with Googledocs, Google calendar and gmail. This tool seems intuitive and offers many features worthy of looking into.

another blog that has all sorts of elearning topics, but also some wrting about project management. I especially enjoyed the post, "Top 10 ways to Annoy a Project Manager".
  •
This looks like a great resource/site. Like you said, there are several interesting looking e-learning topics that are worth checking out. The "Top 10" you mention is a funny, but informative article - i especially liked number 10, which is "Forgetting to thank me when I help you out" :) I also noticed there is a workshop available for this topic, although pricey - if you have the money to burn it could be worth it! Thanks for posting this.

Debra Fine - The Art of Talk - 0 views

  •
I'm posting this link to Debra Fine's website. I've read two of her books: "The Fine Art of Small Talk" and "The Fine Art of the Big Talk." While they're not directly about project management, they do relate to the ability to communicate and build relationships both personally and professionally. The content of these two books has helped me build rapport and relationships with teams and stakeholders, open discussions about sensitive topics and project difficulties, and improve my ability to get what I want out of conversations big and small. I would recommend these books to any PM looking to get better at communicating.
  •
Debra, that book sounds very useful to integrate EQ with the PM experience.

Google Docs - 0 views

  •
Just in case someone has been living under a rock, I'm adding this. I can't tell you how many times people at work email files hundreds of times when we could all just collaborate in Google Docs. We used Google Hangouts to chat in former projects and could actually see when each other was typing something. Love it!

I was really resistant to the idea of Google docs when it first came into being. Now, I am a convert. It is the most fabulously simple resource for working collaboratively.
  •
GoogleDocs can be incredibly useful but not everyone is on the google bandwagon. I know for me personally I use it when I need to and it is great when everyone is working synchronously as a team to develop content or a document. They have done a good job with their suite of products, i just wish when you copied and pasted from Office it wasn't so distorted.
  •
I agree, Google Docs is worth posting. I just heard yesterday (completely unconfirmed) that Google Docs in Boulder employs 1,000 people. for what it lacks in perfections, it also saves us from saving and potentially storing unfinished documents. As Martha would say, "It's a good thing."
  •
I agree with Jen. While GoogleDocs is a great time saver I wish you could do more with formatting, pasting, etc. The formatting also differs if you download the doc onto a Mac which can be a pain when working with a group. Overall, though I think it is a worthwhile collaborative tool.

Good call. My team spent an entire meeting demonstrating how to use Live Meeting via Outlook, only to later find out that it costs our company each time we initiate a call. I mentioned Hangouts as an alternative, and nobody had any idea what I was talking about, despite the fact that all of my teammates have Gmail. Yikes! Sometimes its scary how much we don't know!

4 Tips for Working With SMEs - 0 views

  •
No matter how great we are at creating learning solutions, we will not even get off the ground without the right content and context. Sometimes, working with SMEs can be one of the most difficult parts of the process. This article provides four great suggestions for how to effectively work with your SME.

    Great article and tips!
  •
I really enjoyed this read! Great information on communicating with SMEs and how to keep moving.
  •
The "Help them take a step back" bullet is an excellent point. A lot of times, SMEs try to put EVERYTHING about a topic in a training and if you tell them everything, they remember nothing. I use Action Mapping to keep SME's (and me) focused on what content should be taught. Great article!
  •
I like #2. So many times SMEs loose sight of the project objective. :-)
  •
Jenna, these guidelines are simple but powerful. What of the greatest challenges I had on a recent project was to get the SME to back off and take care of the content, not the learning materials. I never really succeeded but it might have helped if I had the #4 guideline instilled in our heads early in the project.

OpenProj - Project Management - 0 views

  •
Open Source desktop project management software. This is an awesome tool for those of us without access to the likes of MS Project.
  •
Open Source desktop project management and can be used as an alternative to Microsoft Project. PM's can create GANT charts, and also many other templates.
  •
It looks great, but I'm always suspicious about what type of Trojan I might download with these programs. Has anyone used it successfully?

The Project Manager vs. the Business Analyst - 0 views

  •
I have a hard time deciding whether "versus" is a good word to compare the two roles. On one hand, the project manager and business analyst should be working collaboratively. On the other hand, the two roles do offer a healthy contest in project related decisions.

Excel Project Management - Free Templates, Resources & Information - 2 views

This site is tremendous for doing a lot of very cool things in Excel. Any time I have a new project, I always check in here to see if there is anything that can help me get my information into a eye catching and user friendly format.
  •
Nice - thanks! Looks like this has tons of useful information for a huge number of things. And I'm psyched if a product I already have and know how to use can also address project management needs pretty well...
  •
John, I have been dissatisfied until now about what Excel templates I could find for Project Management. This site really fills in the blanks for me. I know Excel extremely well but still found this quite useful!
