The risk log - 3 views

  •
An essential tool in any project management methodology is the risk log or risk register. This provides a means of recording the identified risks, the analysis of their severity and the necessary management actions to be taken.
  •
    helpful template for risk assessment
  •
The two things I liked about this site most were the concepts of an RAG status and assigning an early warning sign. I like the RAG status because it gives the risk log a quick visual aspect. You can see right away the amount of risk involved in your project. I like the thought of assigning an early warning sign because it really makes you think out each risk involved in your project. When an early warning sign does occur, you will be aware of the risk much sooner than if you had not thought it through.

Nice article Victoria. They make setting up a PMO sound so easy! Could very well be the case in a smaller organization. Taking on something like this in a larger organization can be a challenge. Thanks for the post!

21 Ways to excel at project management - 1 views

  •
This article breaks down the stages of a project. It is an easy read.
  •
Interesting article, I learned something new in the section releasing the benefits. Specifically, "to gain benefits, you must have change." I know some can be afraid of change but then how does a company grow. Change needs to occur to have everything stay current and up-to date. thanks
  •
This was a great article since it appealed to all skill levels. Whether new to project management or a "seasoned" professional these tips could apply to all. I also like how it was broken down into 21 ways so you could pick one topic and work on that and then move on to the next if need be. A great way to gradually build better PM skills.

I think people in all career areas could learn something from these general stress busters...it's just a matter of seeing through to help yourself when you're in the midst of crisis!
  •
Good article on what can cause stress, the biological and mental aspect of stress and some quick tips you can use anywhere. So many of us rely on caffeine drinks to keep up going it is scary what the long term effects can be. A good smoothie can probably do better and is better for you. Dabbled around the site a bit and found out these guys are from Canada, my home country!
  •
Right. Stress. I think this is one I should post hard-copy to the wall, ha. I might consider cutting back on caffeine and taking a deep breath more often. Thanks for a smart addition to the PM list :)
  •
Jaime- I am on day 2 of no caffeine and I already feel SO much calmer. I'm craving it really badly, but I was so jittery lately and I know it was stressing me out more. A good reminder on keeping stress under control. Thanks Allan!
  •
I like the recommendations for stress reduction. A few people at my work actually requested that the company create a quiet relaxation room. Not sure if they'll do it, but I hope so. I got into breathing meditation years ago and it pretty much cured me of anxiety attacks that had persisted from my late 20's to early 30's. A couple years of daily practice and they haven't returned for almost 10 years. I don't keep up with the meditation anymore, but I'd say any amount of practice can affect long-term benefits.

Lou Russel frequently contributes to ASTD and has a book called Project Management for Trainers. This links to the resources available on her website.

I recently attended a two-day ASTD certificate course she did in conjunction with the TechKnowledge conference in Las Vegas. It was informative and she has a unique approach that really presented some of the concepts in a straight-forward manner/ Of course, in two days you can only dig so deep but I would recommend the course for those new to project management.
