  • The National Institutes of Health has awarded $5.3 million in initial one-year funding to the latest two recipients of the Autism Centers of Excellence (ACE) program. With these awards, announced on World Autism Awareness Day, these and nine other ACE centers around the country are now being funded for up to five years. The program was created in 2007 to launch an intense and coordinated research effort aimed at identifying the causes of autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and finding new treatments.

    Click here to register for this webinar What: This webinar will discuss the spectrum of disorders associated with the FMR1 gene mutation: Fragile X Syndrome (FXS), Fragile X Primary Ovarian Insufficiency (FXPOI), and Fragile X Tremor Ataxia Syndrome (FXTAS). FXS is the leading known cause of autism and the most prevalent inheritable cause of intellectual disabilities. FXPOI affects 15-20% of women who have the premutation allele of the FMR1 gene and involves clinical features including irregular menses, reduced fertility and premature menopause. Also within the premutation range, the neurodegenerative condition known as FXTAS can occur in 46% of males and 17% of women. This webinar will provide a basic understanding of the FMR1 gene mutation, prevalence and clinical features of FX Associated Disorders. A discussion of the varied clinical presentations, associated health conditions and the most recent research on treatments will be included.     A series of 6 classes structured to help parents and direct caregivers understand and support children andadolescents with serious mental illness (ADD/ADHD, Depression, Bipolar Disorder, Anxiety Disorders, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Schizophrenia, and other emotional and behavioral issues) while maintaining their own well being. The course is taught by a team of trained NAMI family members and direct caregiver volunteers who know what it's like to have a child struggling with one of these brain disorders. Topics covered will be the 'no fault' approach, the biology of mental illness, getting an accurate diagnosis, an overview of treatment options, the impact on family, communication, crisis management, the systems/agencies involved with your child, the importance of record keeping, and advocating and team building for you and your child. National Center for Learning Disabilities Survey - 0 views

  • NCLD collected data from a random sampling of 1,980 adults in the United States, evenly distributed across males and females, via an online survey in August 2012. The sampling is representative of the U.S. population with a margin of error of 4.4 percent.  Twelve percent of the respondents cited having a learning disability, and eight percent of the parents surveyed have a child with a learning disability.  Results reveal the need for more education about the causes, treatments of, and treatments for learning disabilities, and a better understanding of the rights of learning disabled people in the workplace.

  • For the first time in 15 years, a major psychiatric organization is updating its practice guidelines for treating kids and adolescents with autism. A series of seven recommendations from the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry outline the responsibilities clinicians have in diagnosing and treating those on the spectrum. The guidance published this month in the Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry is an update to recommendations first presented by the group in 1999. It offers clinicians a roadmap for the best assessment and treatment practices for autism, though doctors must also take into account each patient’s unique circumstances in developing a plan, the organization said.
