Show 35 __ Transition from High School to College - Part 1

Jean Ashmore, Director of Disability Support Services, is interviewed by Jac Brennan about issues surrounding the transition from high school to college for students with disabilities.

The updated regulations that govern the Americans with Disabilities Act Amendments Act will become effective in March 2011. Significant changes are included in these regulations and they are likely to have a significant (and positive) impact on those with learning disabilities (LD).   This podcast features a conversation with attorney Jo Anne Simon on how, specifically, these new rules will impact students with LD. Ms. Simon has over 30 years of experience working with the disability community and has helped create the field of post-secondary disability services by working at the grassroots and organizational level. Ms. Simon has worked for effective implementation of the federal Americans with Disabilities Act since its enactment in 1990, and before that with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973.

A school and community that do not address bullying cannot ensure that each student is healthy, safe, engaged, supported, and challenged. Bullying influences each critical dimension of a whole child approach to education because it compromises students’ physical and emotional health and safety; affects their relationships with peers and adults in the school; creates barriers that prevent them from engaging in learning and connecting to the school and broader community; and affects their academic performance. When bullying goes unaddressed, it can create a negative school culture and organizational patterns that shape students’ learning and development.

Michael Boll , is the father of an eight -year old boy on the autism spectrum.  A twelve-year, certified classroom teacher, Michael decided to take some time off from his career to create and implement a home program that compliments his son’s school program.  After two enjoyable years, Michael is back in the classroom. He teaches fifth grade at Concordia International School, Shanghai, China.  His son is now attending a school for kids with special needs in Shanghai.  Michael’s wife, Lori, works at that school.
