Unity: The Language Behind the Device - Webinar - May 8, 9, June 4, 5, 2013 - 0 views

    What:
    PRC believes in providing single words for novel communication in addition to preprogrammed sentences and topic/environment specific vocabulary. This course explains the unique method of organizing and accessing vocabulary for all language levels and addresses the ongoing struggle with the constant need for adding vocabulary. It consists of two segments and will focus on Unity 60, 84, and 144 (found in the ECO, Vantage Lite, Vantage, or Vanguard). In the first segment, you will learn about the vocabulary options, icon features/functions and Unity Patterns 1 and 2. In the second segment you will learn Unity Pattern 3 through 5. Strategies for teaching Unity will be addressed throughout the training.

    When:
    This training meets 2 times. You are expected to attend both sessions.
    May 8, 9, and June 4, 5, 2013 
    4:00 pm - 6:00 pm Mountain (both days)

Toys Cars Offer Mobility to Children with Disabilities - 0 views

  • At the 2012 USA Science & Engineering Festival, children swarmed a National Science Foundation exhibit booth featuring electric-powered, child-sized toy cars. Assistants carefully explained how to operate the cars, which featured unique designs and operating features. One of cars, for example, would move only if the child driver remained standing. To stop, the driver had to sit down. Excited children and their parents wondered about the cars' purpose; after all, these cars weren't being exhibited at a science and engineering event for being ordinary toys.
  • University of Delaware researchers had, in fact, specifically designed the cars to provide mobility to very young children with special needs.

I want to applaud you for your dedication to children with disabilities—and their parents. I also want to say I wish it wasn't necessary for parents to be such fierce advocates. I understand that parents are compelled to advocate because they see that their sons and daughters aren't getting the free, appropriate public education that federal law guarantees them. President Obama and I believe that every child deserves a world-class education. When we say every child, it is not just rhetoric—we mean every child, regardless of his or her skin color, nationality, ethnicity, or ability. Over the past 37 years, with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act and the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, we've made great strides in delivering on the promise of a free, appropriate public education for children with disabilities.

  • Click here to download the full brochure with registration information (PDF) What: Behavior Management This academy is intended to give the paraeducator knowledge and skill in instructional methods that support students who have challenging behaviors in inclusive classrooms, resource rooms, elf-contained classrooms, domestic settings and the community. The module focuses on interactions that paraeducators have with students whose behaviors are challenging and on the role they lay in assisting the professional members of their teams with behavior challenges. Effective behavior management is a complex system of proactive strategies, positive reinforcements and natural or logical consequences. The most important concept to understand is that good behavioral management begins with the educator; that ultimately the only person anyone can truly control is him or herself. Our focus, therefore, must be on changing what we, as educators do, as opposed to attempting to make or force our students to change. This academy will address this issue and provide participants with a “tool box” of ideas and strategies that have been proven to encourage positive behavior in students. If your school is an MBI school, these strategies are consistent with the MBI philosophy. Number Theory and Rational Numbers This academy was designed to provide paraeducators with the skills and knowledge needed to assist students, grades 5-8, with mathematics skills taught in the classroom. The course content is designed and adapted from standards recommended by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. It includes the specific skill-building areas of number sense, computational techniques for fractions, decimals and percentages; and their related applications for intermediate and middle-school learners.   • Tools For Success: Working With Youth With Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) in the Juvenile Justice System About This Program This program is designed for you to learn at your own pace. You may view each module sequentially, or in any order you wish. Click on the Modules tab at the top of the screen; double click on the module you wish to view. Move from screen to screen using the forward and back arrows at the bottom of the screen. To view the notes, click on the notes icon at the bottom of each slide. There is a Quiz consisting of 10 questions at the end of each module. At the end of the quiz, you may print out a Certificate of Completion for your files. Provide your name and email address on the sign-in screen for the customized Certificate. If you choose not to provide this information, you can download and print a Certificate of Completion after completing the course which you can then fill in with your name.
