    Individuals who have both mental illness (MI) and intellectual/developmental disability (IDD) present clinical challenges to professionals as well as to the systems that attempt to provide care to these individuals. Clinicians frequently have difficulty in appropriately identifying a mental health disorder, even when one exists, in persons who have limited verbal skills. This six-hour workshop is designed to provide the participant with clinical information that will help in the assessment, diagnosis and support strategies necessary to provide appropriate care for this underserved group of people. The participant will learn how mental health signs and symptoms are manifested in persons with a dual diagnosis as compared to those with only mental illness. Upon completion of this training, you will: Articulate the profile and characteristics of people with MI/IDD; Articulate vulnerability factors in people with MI/IDD; Identify best practices in assessment procedures for people with MI/IDD; Identify signs and symptoms of MI in persons with IDD; Describe the major features in the Diagnostic Manual - Intellectual Disabilities (DM-ID); Describe techniques associated with supportive therapy for persons with MI/IDD; Identify the value of the NADD Accreditation and Certification Program. Pediatrician Training May Speed Autism Diagnosis - Disability Scoop - 0 views

  • A training program designed to teach pediatricians to better identify kids with autism may be an effective way to decrease wait times and flag children with the developmental disorder at younger ages, researchers say. Currently many children suspected of having autism wait months to see diagnosticians for an evaluation, but researchers say that training community pediatricians to conduct assessments may allow kids to enter treatment programs more quickly. In a three-year study, researchers at Vanderbilt University trained 27 pediatric providers — including doctors and nurse practitioners — across the state of Tennessee to conduct brief evaluations in their practices of children who screened positive for autism. After participating in the two-day trainings, researchers found that the health care providers reached the same diagnostic conclusions as specialists 90 percent of the time. What’s more, providers reported making more autism diagnoses within their practices and said they were more comfortable discussing the developmental disorder. “The findings provide initial evidence suggesting early accurate diagnosis of autism may be possible and appropriate within many community pediatric practices,” said Amy Swanson of Vanderbilt who was the lead author of the study published online this month in the journal Autism. “Given the potentially harmful consequences of lengthy waits for comprehensive diagnostic evaluations, the potential impact of such training programs for advanced autism diagnosis within community practice settings could be quite powerful.”

Autism was not identified before the 1940s. Weren’t there any autistic people before this? Autism was not a new phenomenon starting in the middle of the 20th century, but it needed people like Leo Kanner and Hans Asperger to point out the striking constellation of poor social communication and stereotypic behaviours for others to see it too. Clinicians used the terms ‘infantile’ or ‘early childhood autism’ and located it among the neglected population of children who were born ‘mentally deficient’. Gradually clinicians became aware that most of this neglected population showed similar problems in varying degrees, and that specialist services were needed to educate children who could not communicate appropriately. They embraced the idea of the autism spectrum. So, just as there has been an increase in the autism spectrum diagnosis, there has been a corresponding decrease in the diagnosis of mental retardation.

  • Western Psychological Services, a publishing company based in Los Angeles, owns many of the common autism screening and diagnostic instruments. These include the Social Responsiveness Scale (SRS), a widely used screening questionnaire that Constantino developed, as well as the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS) and the Autism Diagnostic Interview-Revised (ADI-R), often referred to as the gold-standard tests for diagnosis of the disorder. Each time one of these tests is administered, the publisher charges a fee, and passes a portion of the royalties on to the test’s developers. “I don’t think there’s any other condition in medicine in which you have to pay a royalty to a publishing company in order to make the diagnosis,” says David Skuse, professor of behavioral and brain sciences at University College London. Skuse has helped develop two freely available tools, the Social and Communication Disorders Checklist (SCDC) and the developmental, dimensional and diagnostic interview (3di). In many countries, paying royalties of even a few dollars represents a substantial hardship. Durkin and others say these costs not only limit access to diagnosis for individuals, but also forestall epidemiological studies, which require surveying thousands of individuals. One reason researchers have traditionally turned to publishers is a lack of alternative distribution channels, Durkin says. A new online clearinghouse of information, DisabilityMeasures.org, attempts to address this issue by gathering free diagnostic tools for developmental disabilities such as autism.

One important change was for Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) classifications. Under the new DSM-5 criteria, clinicians will diagnosis individuals with a single umbrella diagnosis of ASD, rather than the four separate disorders that could be diagnosed under the DSM-IV: autistic disorder, Asperger's disorder, childhood disintegrative disorder and pervasive developmental disorder not otherwise specified.

Aspergers will no longer exist after May of 2013 - 0 views

    The American Psychological Association (APA) is changing the definition of Autism Spectrum Disorders, a change which will occur in May of 2013. Click here to review he changes that will be included in the DSM-5. Note: A diagnosis of Aspergers does not qualify a student for eligibility under the disability category of Other Health Impairment. The OHI criteria require that the student has a health problem and Aspergers is a psychological disorder. There are several changes which concern parents, education professionals and people with autism spectrum disorders. Very briefly, these changes are: The new APA criterion for autism spectrum disorders is different from the current APA, IDEA and Montana educational criteria for autism spectrum disorders. Asperger's Disorder and Pervasive Developmental Disorder (PDD) will no longer exist as separate APA diagnostic categories, but will be subsumed in the revised APA criteria for "Autism Spectrum Disorder." Aspergers and PDD will no longer exist. What will these changes mean for students with autism spectrum disorders in Montana's public schools? Montana is unlikely to change the current criteria for identification of a student as having autism until the Individuals with Disabilities in Education Act (IDEA) is reauthorized.The IDEA was last reauthorized in 2004 and the revised regulations were published in 2006.
