When: Monday June 28, 2010 11:30 am - 12:30pm Mountain Audience: Head Start Teachers and Staff What: This workshop gives professionals and parents strategies for creating environments that help children who are at risk due to behavior problems.   This workshop will assess the environments and gives specific examples of how to manage the environment to prevent behavior problems and teach appropriate behaviors.   This workshop stresses meeting the needs of the child and presents strategies that are nonpunitive. This workshop discusses behavior management strategies that will be effective for young children who need additional assistance in maintaining or learning appropriate social skills and behaviors at home and at school.  These are children who are disruptive in daycare or preschool settings and/or difficult at home. This workshop will also address the needs of children who display violent behaviors toward adults and other children.

Teaching Tools for Young Children with Challenging Behavior

Creating Teaching Tools for Young Children with Challenging Behavior is a FREE product developed by the Technical Assistance Center on Social Emotional Intervention for Young Children (TACSEI) that gives teachers practical strategies, developed from TACSEI’s research activities and experiences in Positive Behavior Support, to  create a plan to support young children who are having challenging behavior.

Managing behavior that is challenging can be very stressful for parents of children and adults with special needs. But it’s important to see it as a form of communication. Challenging behavior indicates there is a problem in learning and not in the person.

Before stimulant drugs such as Ritalin, Concerta and Adderall began their rise to popularity in the 1970s, treatment for attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) focused on behavioral therapy. But as concerns build over the mounting dosages and extended treatment periods that come with stimulant drugs, clinical researchers are revisiting behavioral therapy techniques. Whereas stimulant medications may help young patients focus and behave in the classroom, research now suggests that behaviorally based changes make more of a difference in the long-term.

The discussion will then move into a description of the processes suggested for successful implementation. The presenter will also discuss the steps for creating a proactive crisis intervention plan specific to individuals who have been diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorders. This will be followed with a brief look at the National Autism Center’s list of research-based interventions and identifying those that may be considered as part of a Positive Behavior Support Plan for people with ASD.Who Should Attend?This session is appropriate for job coaches, job developers, VR counselors, transition age special educators and paraeducators, employment specialists, advocates, families, non-profit leadership staff, and employers.CEUs:.15 CEUs are pending approval through Minot State University. The process is the same for any goal - academic or behavioral. You need to clearly define the target behavior. (Note: the behavior should be described in nonjudgmental terms.) The school needs to gather baseline data on the behavior for the Present Levels of Performance before developing specific measurable goals.

Specifically, these individuals have made outstanding contributions in all of the following areas:  Led efforts to promote the social inclusion of individuals with trauma histories and behavioral health problems;  Personally demonstrated that recovery is real and possible; and Made a positive impact on their community, workplace, or school. Click here to download full brochure (PDF) What: This workshop is designed for parents, educators, tutors, and aides working with children with autism in an ABA and/or Verbal Behavior Program. Participants will be able to identify examples of verbal operants, identify methods for developing and maintaining motivation, identify effective data collection, and how to teachchildren both in the classroom and in the natural environment. This workshop is designed for parents, professionals and paraprofessionals to learn how to implement behavioral teaching strategies. Participants will not only be shown how to implement a variety of teaching procedures, but will also practice those procedures and receive individualized feedback on the implementation of the techniques. The workshop will also cover the behavioral analysis of expressive language (Verbal Behavior), the basic principles of behavior, and an analysis of motivational strategies to keep the learner actively participating in the learning activities. The Positive Behavior Support-Nevada program, located in the University of Nevada, Reno's College of Education's Nevada Center for Excellence in Disabilities, offers a way to positively impact the quality of life for individuals and families struggling with disabilities. In addition to a variety of services already provided, the non-profit, statewide program installed a new series of workshops that have helped its participants make strides in improving the specific challenging behaviors that many individuals with disabilities face.

The OPI Montana Autism Education Project is providing a limited number of FREE parent subscriptions for the Autism Training Solutions online autism/behaviorism training program. The subscriptions will begin in late March and will last for 90 days. For each individual subscription, the parent watches short online videos and then answers quizzes. A first-of-its-kind study looking at a widely-used program designed to improve behavior finds that the strategy is proving effective for students with and without disabilities. Researchers at Johns Hopkins compared the experiences of students at 21 schools using the program known as School-Wide Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports, or SWPBIS, to kids at 16 schools that did not use the program over four years.
