What:
The Montana Autism Education Project of the Office of Public Instruction is proud to present Rudy Simone in three presentations. Simone is the author of four books on Asperger syndrome, all best-sellers. Presentation on the following topics:

Childhood, Adolescent and Adult Aspergers - This talk covers the traits and hallmarks of early childhood ASCs (autism spectrum conditions, incl. but not limited to Asperger Syndrome), adolescence and adulthood with some attention paid to how the same AS traits may manifest or be perceived differently in females.

Relationships - This talk is tailored to suit the audience: whether they are mostly couples or simply individuals on the spectrum looking for relationship advice and assistance, professionals, friends and family members. Discusses the types of challenges spectrum people face throughout life when navigating friendships, dating, cohabitating, marriage, sex and children.

Aspergers on the Job - This topic includes education and career and so is relevant for virtually all ages. Discusses how sensory, social, cognitive and physical challenges and strengths impact our work choices and experience. Positively focuses on training the talent, making the right educational and career choices, and managing challenges. Where/When:

In the spirit of discovery, the annual Montana Youth Transitions (MYT) Conference will seek to answer important questions about the challenging journey into adulthood for Montana's youth with disabilities. It will be an opportunity for students, parents, teachers, vocational rehabilitaion counselors, case managers and others to network, explore resources, and discover pathways to meaningful futures! During the conference, there will be a Real LIfe Fair with vendors representing education, idependent living, recreation, employment, and other supportive services. Presenters will include well known keynotes as well as Montanans who have themselves gone through the transition process and can offer insight, guidance and support. A youth track will also be provided to start youth on their own individualized transition journey. When/Where:

What:
Families and educators need continued assistance with resources that teach life skills to assist individuals with autism as they negotiate important transitions in their lives. This two day conference will provide information and hands-on experience that will help you assist children and young adults on the spectrum to discover their unique interests and abilities. Fostering self-identity that will prepare individuals with autism for lifelong inclusion in the community that will maximize their independence, productivity, and enjoyment. Successful early transitions will help pave the way for future transitions. Some individuals on the spectrum will pursue higher education and competitive employment opportunities while others are more limited. Beyond their varied abilities and interests, limited social skills for nearly all individuals with autism make it difficult for them to adjust to new school environments, different living arrangements, college and the workplace. With proper support and services from teachers, mentors, co-workers and job coaches who understand these special needs, we believe all individuals can be supported to lead happier, more productive and independent lives. In addition to information about transitions, educators and family members attending this year's conference will be able to participate in activities often used in therapy and successful educational environments. Through years of researching, evaluating, treating, and coaching youth and adults, Dr. Fruge' and Dr. Green-Fruge' have developed an innovative program called Preparing the Mind for Success and Competition (PMSC), which is primarily focused on At-Risk youth and young adults. Dr. Fruge' and Dr. Green-Fruge' will present their preliminary research on this innovative program and its practical application. The goal of the workshop is to provide attendants with a Functional Cultural Context to understand and navigate common challenges faced when working with At-Risk youth. Attendants will be introduced to training and psycho-therapeutic approaches to support At-Risk youth in their transition to adulthood and success.

"Temple Grandin knows she's different. But she wouldn't have it any other way. In 1950, Grandin was diagnosed with autism. The disorder, seen in about 1 in 110 U.S. kids, spans a range of complex neurodevelopmental problems: an inability to make social connections, language difficulties and bizarre, repetitive behaviors. There is no known cause or cure. Some children may have a mild form of the disorder, yet have difficulties holding down a job in adulthood. Others may never be able to live on their own. And some, like Grandin, defy the odds. "
