What:
Children with autism and related neurodevelopmental disorders present numerous challenges for therapists and educators. They have significant processing deficits that impact their functioning across domains, and can stretch the knowledge and resources of even experienced practitioners. Often viewed through the lens of "behavior," the symptoms these children display are more accurately described as manifestations of inefficient and ineffective processing. Understanding how information processing deficits impact these children paves the way for applying a new generation of strategies designed to address core processing problems and promote meaningful skill development. Objectives include: Describe the connection between information processing deficits and symptoms in autism/related disorders. Differentiate between methods that promote rote behavior and those that develop meaningful thinking. Explain how to adjust the pacing of activities to improve processing, communication and behavior. Discuss communication modifications that support processing speed and effectiveness. Describe how processing problems impact behavior and hot to respond in ways that diffuse behavior more quickly. This session will describe the prefrontal cortex's role in attention, behavior and emotion and how abnormal development in this area of the brain contributes to ADHD, ODD and bipolar disorder. Dr. Arnsten will also underscore the role of stress in causing prefrontal cortical dysfunction and emerging treatments.

Goals and Objectives:
1) The role of the prefrontal cortex in the top-down regulation of attention, behavior and emotion.
2) How abnormal development and dysfunction of the prefrontal cortex contributes to childhood disorders such as Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Oppositional Defiant Disorder and bipolar disorder.
3) How prefrontal cortical circuits are modulated by the arousal systems, and how stress  exposure or lead poisoning can cause prefrontal cortical dysfunction that mimics ADHD.
4) New data on how medications used to treat ADHD can strengthen prefrontal cortical regulation through catecholamine actions on prefrontal network connections. The purpose of this webinar series is to introduce clinicians to exciting developments in neuroscience that provides complex and new understanding of developmental and behavioral disorders in children. What:
Healthy People 2020 contains almost 600 objectives for improving the health of all Americans, and 100 of those objectives relate to children and youth with special healthcare needs (CYSHCN). To highlight some of these objectives and envision how the objectives might influence CYSHCN as they mature into adults, Genetic Alliance and Family Voices collaborated with the Division of Services for Children with Special Health Needs in the Health Resources and Services Administration's Maternal and Child Health Bureau (MCHB) - which last year released Envision 2020, its strategic plan - to develop a family and consumer perspective on the national health promotion agenda and how it relates to CYSHCN and their families. By focusing on a small portion of the many community and organizational accomplishments related to children and youth with special healthcare needs (CYSHCN) and systems of care, we hope to generate discussions of the gaps that remain, as well as equip families and providers to better advocate and care for CYSHCN and their families. This webinar will present Envision 2020 as well as the Consumer Perspective document and demonstrate how Healthy People 2020 objectives can influence and provide direction for improving systems and services for individuals with special healthcare needs.
