Autism and AAC: Five things I wish I had known | Small But Kinda MightySmall But Kinda ... - 0 views

  • In the title of this post I’ve linked autism and AAC for a specific reason. A lot of the points here are equally applicable to people who have a different disability but my argument in this particular post is for ALL autistic people to have access to AAC, regardless of whether they can speak. More on that later. If you make it to the end of the post I’ve got some news about price drops for two very good AAC apps and a giveaway for one of them.

Click here to download the flyer for this event (.pdf) What:
Imagine that someone who is only familiar with PCs suddenly comes across an Apple Mac computer for the first time. The interface would look different, programs that person had on disk would not load - because they were designed for a PC. So the computer goes back to the shop with the complaint that it is broken. That, essentially, is what we do with our dyslexic learners. Parents and teens who have attended this seminar have seen results in their teens' self esteem and confidence. Teachers appreciate the information and resources they can use on their own.  Leave with the understanding that dyslexic thinkers are among the brightest in our society; what's more, with the right approach, the dyslexic thinking style contains all the ingredients for academic success. Preregistration is required and can be made by calling Learning Options at 406-282-7416 or emailing elsie@thelearningoptions.com. When:
    Friday, May 11, 2012
    7:00-9:00pm Saturday, May 12, 2012

Use your imagination and Automator to see how you can use the power of your voice to control your Mac.

Autism, iPhone, MacBook, and Life | ATMac - 0 views

  • My name is Jamie Knight, and I am an autistic front end web developer from the UK. In this article I am going to explore how Apple technology fundamentally changes my life, and enriches the lives of others. Disabilities, differences, call them what you will, have for a long time been a great area for technology to help. From the first white canes to the latest assistive and augmentative communication aids, there are a range of needs out there which technology is able to fulfil. For this article I would like to focus on 3 areas: communication, organisation and management. These are the ways in which my autism affects me and where technology helps the most.

How Tech for the Disabled Is Going Mainstream - BusinessWeek - 0 views

  • Apple (AAPL) is widely celebrated for making devices as easy to use as they are elegantly designed. What customers probably don't know is that some of these features aren't exactly new—they evolved from software Apple created to help disabled people use PCs. Among them: the new iPhone's voice control option, which allows users to speak to their handsets to prompt an action, such as calling Mom, or to get a spoken answer to such questions as "What song is playing?"

Free for Download: The Updated Freedom Stick | Special Education & IEP Advisor - 0 views

  • The Freedom Stick is a system, it can be downloaded and installed on a 4gb Flash Drive and carried everywhere by the student, plugged into and used on school computers or public library computers, or even employer computers – anywhere any version of Microsoft Windows is installed (including on Apple Macintosh computers which can have Windows installed as a second operating system). Or it can be installed directly onto your own computer. It is safe in all computing environments, tested globally since development began in Scotland with EduApps. This version was developed with US Department of Education and Michigan Department of Education grants through Michigan’s Integrated Technology Supports (MITS) in order to bring Universal Design Technology to American schools. The Freedom Stick is a collection of free, open-source programs which provide the widest range of supports for differing student needs. It is also a system supported by a range of learning tools – including a full set of “how to use” videos and presentations. It is easy to adapt to the students own needs, and it works with the supports included in Windows to create a true Universal Solution Set.
