Global Climate Change - YouTube - 0 views

  •
In this video Paul Andersen explains how the climate on the earth is affected by the amount of solar radiation and the greenhouse affect. The addition of anthropogenic greenhouse gases has led to global warming which is impacting humans on the planet. A discussion of the greenhouse effect and greenhouse gases (including water vapor, carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, and CFCs) is included. Countries have committed to reduce through both the Kyoto Protocol and the Paris Agreement.

Coral Collapse Millennia Ago May Preview Global Warming Impact - Scientific American - 0 views

  •
By analyzing the chemical signatures of six coral reef cores taken from multiple sites in the Pacific Ocean around Panama, the scientists found an extreme weather event associated with what we would call La Niña today triggered the reef collapse. A series of events similar to El Niño continued to suppress the reef for the next two millenniums.

Evolution: Library: Whale Evolution - 1 views

  •
5 minute video: The evolution of whales has been a mystery. How did a large, big-brained mammal -- air-breathing, warm-blooded, giving birth to live young -- come to live entirely in water, when mammals evolved on land?

Deadly Bacteria Spread across Oceans as Water Temperatures Rise - Scientific American - 0 views

  •
Deadly bacteria are spreading through the oceans as waters warm up, and are increasing infection risks, according to a new study. Multiple species of rod-shaped Vibrio bacteria live in the world's oceans, and their populations rise and fall based on many different variables, changing the likelihood of making people sick.

Five Pacific islands vanish from sight as sea levels rise | New Scientist - 0 views

  •
Going, going, gone. Five of the Solomon Islands have been swallowed whole by rising sea levels, offering a glimpse into the future of other low-lying nations. Sea levels in the Solomon Islands have been climbing by 7 millimetres per year over the last two decades, due to a double whammy of global warming and stronger trade winds.

Warming oceans may shrink Florida stone crab supply - Yahoo News - 0 views

  •
Researchers working with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration say warmer, more acidic oceans may reduce the number of stone crab hatchlings as the availability of the popular, pricey delicacy dwindles.

Brain-eating amoebas kill by turning your body against you - health - 13 May 2015 - New... - 0 views

  •
Brain-eating amoebas (Naegleria fowleri) are found in warm freshwater pools around the world, feeding on bacteria. If someone swims in one of these pools and gets water up their nose, the amoeba heads for the brain in search of a meal. Once there, it starts to destroy tissue by ingesting cells and releasing proteins that make other cells disintegrate.

Are earthquakes also earth burps? | Science/AAAS | News - 0 views

  •
An "excuse me" might be nice. Researchers have found that Earth belches a potent greenhouse gas known as tetrafluoromethane (CF4) during earthquakes and other tectonic events. The emissions likely aren't making a significant contribution to global warming, but the findings could change the way scientists model future climate scenarios. They also complicate the use of CF4 as a way to measure how the continents and climate have changed over millennia.

NASA simulation shows a year in the life of Earth's CO2 - Yahoo News - 0 views

  •
Earlier this week, the space agency released a new simulation created with this model, called GEOS-5, that shows clouds of carbon dioxide, a key driver of global warming, drifting far from their original sources - turning local greenhouse gases into global problems.

Wrap-up: U.S. Senate agrees climate change is real-but not necessarily that humans are ... - 0 views

  •
Nearly all U.S. senators agreed today on a measure affirming that climate change is real and not a hoax-including, to the surprise of many observers, Senator James Inhofe (R-OK), the man who once declared global warming a hoax. Meanwhile, although two other measures stating that humans are contributing to climate change won a majority of votes from the 99 senators present, they failed to garner the 60 votes needed to be adopted by the Senate.

Giving up beef will reduce carbon footprint more than cars, says expert | Environment |... - 0 views

  •
The heavy impact on the environment of meat production was known but the research shows a new scale and scope of damage, particularly for beef. The popular red meat requires 28 times more land to produce than pork or chicken, 11 times more water and results in five times more climate-warming emissions. When compared to staples like potatoes, wheat, and rice, the impact of beef per calorie is even more extreme, requiring 160 times more land and producing 11 times more greenhouse gases.

Video: Zebra finch call prepares their eggs for climate change | Science | AAAS - 0 views

  •
Now, a new study reports that at least one species of songbird-and likely many more-already knows how to prep its chicks for a warming world. They do so by emitting special calls to the embryos inside their eggs, which can hear and learn external sounds. This is the first time scientists have found animals using sound to affect the growth, development, behavior, and reproductive success of their offspring, and adds to a growing body of research revealing that birds can "doctor" their eggs.

Explore Bunny Selection and Mutations with PHET - 0 views

  •
Students can manipulate mutations in bunnies, such as fur color and teeth length. By altering the environmental factors, students can see how the bunny populations change over time. For example, in a warm environment, more bunnies will have brown fur, but in the cold environment, more bunnies will have white fur. The student worksheet includes instructions on how the simulator works. Then students perform a variety of "experiments" to explore mutations in the populations. I include this as part of a unit on evolution, so students are familiar with VIDA charts. Students complete a chart at the end of the activity to summarize how variations in populations lead to adaptation.
