    The physical connection between mother and fetus is provided by the placenta, an organ, built of cells from both the mother and fetus, which serves as a conduit for the exchange of nutrients, gasses, and wastes. Cells may migrate through the placenta between the mother and the fetus, taking up residence in many organs of the body including the lung, thyroid, muscle, liver, heart, kidney and skin. These may have a broad range of impacts, from tissue repair and cancer prevention to sparking immune disorders.

    How are the stages of mitosis related to the creation of identical daughter cells? The primary function of the stages of mitosis is to make certain that each daughter cell is genetically identical to the mother cell. The mother cell's DNA is copied during interphase. During mitosis the chromosomes condense from long strands to highly coiled structures. The two copies of each DNA strand, called sister chromatids, are physically attached to one another. The chromosomes are moved to the center of the cell and split apart in a highly coordinated fashion. The condensation of the chromosomes, the physical connection of the sister chromatids, and the precise movement of the chromosomes are all important in making sure that each daughter cell has one copy of each chromosome and is genetically identical to the mother cell.

Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease, meaning the body's immune system turns on itself. In this case, it causes painful, swollen joints. Women are three times as likely to develop the condition as men, and seem to be especially vulnerable soon after pregnancy. A mother exchanges cells with the fetus while it is in the womb. "For most women, shortly after you give birth, the fetal cells clear up," says Giovanna Cruz, an epidemiologist at the University of California at Berkeley. "But in a subset of women they actually persist for decades." In these women, the fetal cells are effectively incorporated into their bodies, a process known as microchimerism.

First, students are asked to analyze waste that they generate at home and identify any material that is compostable. Next, students explore the science of composting. Finally, students explore the topic of human manure to consider composting to the extreme. The case was designed for an environmental science course for non-majors; no prerequisite knowledge is assumed.

The case is appropriate for a number of classes including general biology, biotechnology, anatomy and physiology, upper level-cell biology, or any human health and disease-related course.
