That's why the annual County Health Rankings are important. They not only show health standards at a local level-they also show the multiple factors that pertain to health outcomes, everything from racial segregation and sleep patterns to smoking rates and access to decent food.

This case study explores the recent (2010 - 2016) outbreak of neural tube defects, specifically anencephaly, in a rural three-county region of Washington state, particularly Yakima, WA. The case study focuses on the biological aspects of teratogens that may cause birth defects as well as epidemiological investigations of disease outbreaks. By the end of the case, students will have explored how our environment may have severe biological consequences on the human body during pregnancy and will have evaluated governmental and scientific investigations of a rare outbreak of birth defects. This clicker case study was developed for a non-majors biology course entitled "Human Development: Conception to Birth," although it could be taught in any introductory biology course for majors or non-majors during a unit on human reproductive biology or developmental biology. The case assumes that students have no prior knowledge of developmental biology or birth defects. The case study could also be adapted for upper-division courses by getting more in-depth on the specifics of teratogen mechanisms, the developmental biology and physiology of neural tube defects, or more complex epidemiological analyses.

Watch the adventures of the inept "Staph Sargent" and his trusty sidekick as they try to infect the world with germs in this animated educational video. But as they plot their evil plan, they are thwarted at every turn by trained PDI Agents (Protect Don't Infect) who thwart their attempts by washing their hands, covering their cough and sneeze and staying home when sick. This wacky video is aimed at kids aged 6-11 but there's plenty of humor that goes right over their head and finds it's target with mom and dad! With worries about the spread of the H1N1 "Swine Flu," this program is perfectly timed for the beginning of school season. The video was produced by the creative team at Omni Productions in Orlando, FL and is part of a very successful campaign by the Orange County Department of Health.

The announcement comes about a week after the state's first case of measles of the year was confirmed. Cook County health officials would only identify the person with measles as a suburban resident who is older than 18. At the time, officials listed three places where others might have come into contact with the measles patient in mid-January - including two in Palatine.
