Open APIs (application programming interfaces) are VERY important to look for when considering cloud-based solutions. Think about the implications for nonprofits selecting an online solution... would you want one with an API or not? (BTW... take a look at the APIs for both Google Apps online and Microsoft Office365 online. Let me know what you find.)

A promising report on a potential reduction in spam traffic. I'm very under impressed on any supposed actions to reduce spam so far. My opinion is that email boxes are exactly backwards because every company believes it is an imperative function. No, I believe every email should require a pre-authorization which big business will fight to the end.... This strikes me as politically motivated

This is admittedly NOT nonprofit related.  But I thought some of you might be interested to know you can get Windows 7 Professional for just $30 from Microsoft.   If you're running Vista, BUY THIS NOW. Windows 7 runs noticeably faster in my experience than Vista on the same hardware. If you're running Windows 7 Home, it's not as big of a deal (if you're on XP, it can get messy to upgrade. Chabinsky, Deputy Assistant Director, Cyber Division, Federal Bureau of Investigation  - delivered March 23, 2010 "...to talk with you about the cyber threat, why it's important, and how you can help your organizations-and in doing so, help our country-rise to this enormous challenge. Some of you no doubt are on the front lines of the cyber security problem and are quite familiar with it, while others of you may only have passing familiarity with this growing problem. First, let me share with you the importance of the cyber security problem from the lens of the FBI. As you know, the FBI is a law enforcement agency that investigates hundreds of federal crimes as well as a domestic national security agency that combats terrorism, espionage, treason, and sabotage.

This strikes me as another press release. While interesting, I'd generally avoid linking to private company press releases, unless there's some clear innovation involved. A press release from Pew about a recent Internet study, or a Berkman Center release regarding recent research is OK. A private company press release should be viewed cautiously.

Although this article speaks mainly about protecting yourself on a network I think it applied very well with this class. It offers many good tips and points as to precautions to take to protect yourself. These precautions are important to consider especially if any work at your non-profit or public place of employment can be completed outside of work at at perhaps a local "hot-spot". This leads me to wonder how safe the new cellphone hot-spots are.

Interesting, but please help me understand how this connects to nonprofit or government use of technology. Sometimes such announcements do have an impact, but if it isn't evident, please explain the connection with a comment! Thanks!

Np time is the technology, that is use for small and medium-sized nonprofits purchasing software, the biggest concern is that it don,t cost too much, but rather not buying the right technology. the smaller nonprofit lack with technology expertise and therefore, the can make bad choices on buying software.

Simple use by New York city of QR codes on building permits to provide links to additional information. 

Wow. Just think, I didn't even know what QR codes were a few weeks ago. I really see them blooming in the next few years (Ha!Bloomberg/ Blooming!). I scanned one from a Meijers grocery coupon and got a 10 second commercial sent back to me.

Very progressive! Excellent use for that specific labeling technology --- especially in a high density population area where a construction project could be a big hassle. This would make it easy for the public passerby to find out more about it, and perhaps a target completion date. Plus, you are certain the contractor has a legal permit from the city of New York for the work they are doing.

I think Egypt may have been a trend setter in Africa. It seems that many dictatorship regimes are getting nervous when it comes to an uprising from the grassroots. I think it is fair to say that the internet, especially social media, is playing a huge role in the peoples ability to overthrow their governments. Technology has become such an important part of the culture in the world that something that previously required wars and months of planning can happen so quickly nearly overnight. Perhaps it is this very idea that leads Libya's government to make the decision that this article explains.

This blog addresses how sensitive issues can be kept private when used by nonprofits to form a community. Examples include how a nonprofit supporting the victims of human trafficking can story-tell their experiences to a wider community without endangering the privacy of the ones involved.

This can come in handy for in anyone who uses social media sites frequently.
