    Airline passengers in the United States understand they will be treated as suspected terrorists when going through airport security checkpoints. Yet nearly a decade after the Sept. 11, 2001 terror attacks, airport security has become a lot more invasive with the rollout of the so-called "advanced imaging technology" scanners, paid for with $1 billion in stimulus funds. The scanners - now deployed at about 78 airports - use either millimeter wave or backscatter technology to create a virtual picture of the traveler's naked body. The image is then viewed by a screener  with the Transportation Security Agency iin a sequestered room away from the checkpoint.

    With the recent news that more e-books were brought than paperbacks in February, its no surprise that Amazon is allowing the Kindle to borrow e-books from more than 11,000 libraries across the U.S. in working with OverDrive, a huge supplier of e-books for public schools and libraries. Students and non-profits will now have greater access to e-books, but the limit on checking out books is a concern with HaperCollins announcing a new policy that requires e-books to expire after being check out only 26 times.

    This article talks about how technology is improving our ability to respond to disasters around the world. Specifically it talks about how technology like SMS and twitter allowed rescue efforts to happen quicker and more efficiently. I think it's cool how with all this new technology we have the ability to save more lives and do more in times of disaster. Families were able to communicate with those in Haiti more than they would have been able to before this technology was available. Also, that with tools like SMS, donations were able to be set up for non-profits to assist in recovery efforts. People are probably more likely to donate if they can do it with something as simple as sending a text message, and organizations will be able to receive the money quicker. Cool article.

  • Jobs has struggled with health issues in recent years and the news that he will be taking a leave of absence comes a year and a half after the chief executive received a liver transplant. In 2004, Jobs announced he had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and, that same year, underwent surgery to remove the cancer. He took a medical leave of absence between January and June 2009, with Cook taking over responsibilities for day to day operations. He received a liver transplant in 2009. When asked about his health at an Apple press conference in July, Jobs replied he was "doing fine" and "feeling great." Yet others have expressed concerns about the CEO's health. The New York Times writes, "In recent months, Mr. Jobs has looked increasingly frail, according to people know have seen him." The lack of a precise end date on Jobs' leave of absence is troubling to some, suggesting the CEO's health issues could be complex and more long term. Cook, not Jobs, took the stage at a recent press conference in New York at which Verizon announced that it would begin carrying Apple's iPhone. Jobs is expected to appear with News Corp CEO Rupert Murdoch to unveil the media mogul's new iPad newspaper, The Daily.

    This article is for nonprofits with little servers. With Windows 2003 or presumably 2007 you can administer servers far away from work. This is something anyone would want because it may be free in most cases.

    Social media tools, such as twitter and facebook, played a significant part of the overthrowing of Mubarak. With two-thirds of Egypt's population under the age of 30, it's no surprise that internet-savvy, educated, young Egyptians used such tools to break barriers in a country that has been ruled under unjust dictatorship throughout their lives. These tools helped organize and gather the millions of protestors that have sparked revolution in Egypt. Social media and sharing information online has played an almost unimaginable role in this process and certainly poses a threat to governments around the world with dictatorships and a significant proportion of the population who is educated and able to use these tools.

    In an attempt to improve health care and reduce long-term expenses, the U.S. government is in the process of digitalizing patient medical records. There are arguments on both sides of the aisle with obviously complications for smaller physician practices. Even though this new system is working for the Mayo Clinic and other large health organizations, I'm skeptical that smaller non-profits will have the resources and correct strategies to make this transition with limited help from the government.

    For what it's worth, I always find snippets like this in the news to be interesting because everyone thinks the same thing: What are they talking about? A dozen tech execs attended a private dinner hosted by President Obama in California. With Zuckerberg to his right and Jobs to his left, one can't help but wonder what was discussed. Being a poli sci major, I feel the Obama administration certainly needs the Silicon Valley tech giants to help get re-elected in 2012. Nonetheless, i guess investment in Silicon Valley is obviously worth a dinner with the President.

    This article covers donor database implementation for a non-profit. Giftworks was endorsed for ease of use. Administrators are happier with a more customized solution when its possible. Microsoft Access was criticized because it seems less directed toward the non-profit sector. It was interesting to note that the competition for donor dollars is increasing. A highly integrated database clearly outperforms segmented data. The online database with a trained rep might be the best choice of all.
