The outline of the 12th Five-Year Plan maps out a visionary blueprint for China's science and technology development. It's viewed by officials as a way to nurture talent in both fields, which will ultimately boost the nation's economy.

I know they've held similar events in Lansing and Ann Arbor (not sure about Grand Rapids). I've heard mixed longer term results from the work: some of it sticks, some doesn't. Would be interesting to do a "one-year later" follow up on these.

Professor Bo Brinkman, has developed an Android app that could save librarians a lot of time and hassle. Using the Android's camera, the app "reads" a bookshelf, and with an AR overlay, quickly flags those books that are misplaced. It will also point to the correct place on the bookshelf so the book can easily be re-shelved correctly.

Another article with tips for better fundraising. The most important message conveyed by this article is to measure fundraising results in reality. There is no need to repeat procedures that aren't delivering.

This is a good article to read for those interested in managing a company, 501 c, etc., and plan on using social networking as a daily tool.

Open APIs (application programming interfaces) are VERY important to look for when considering cloud-based solutions. Think about the implications for nonprofits selecting an online solution... would you want one with an API or not? (BTW... take a look at the APIs for both Google Apps online and Microsoft Office365 online. Let me know what you find.)

It is increasingly apparent that finding the perfect cloud platform is a lot like getting married. The perfect partner if hard to find. Yes there are 5 major players as of today that include Google, Oracle, Microsoft, Amazon but even they aren't identical in this field. A better bargain might be found with one of these baby clouds so it appears to be worth the look. All of the usual IT issues are what will last, what's next and how much did that cost? The clouds are coming no matter what though....

A Senate bill sponsored by: Sen Lieberman, Joseph I. [CT] Establishes in the Executive Office of the President an Office of Cyberspace Policy, which shall: (1) develop a national strategy to increase the security and resiliency of cyberspace; (2) oversee, coordinate, and integrate federal policies and activities relating to cyberspace security and resiliency; (3) ensure that all federal agencies comply with appropriate guidelines, policies, and directives from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), other federal agencies with responsibilities relating to cyberspace security or resiliency, and the National Center for Cybersecurity and Communications (established by this Act); and (4) ensure that federal agencies have access to, receive, and appropriately disseminate law enforcement, intelligence, terrorism, and any other information relevant to the security of specified federal, military, and intelligence information infrastructure.

National Unplugging day is where people put away their phones, computers and any kind of social networking devices for one day. The day was very successful and people liked it because it helped them reconnect with each other because it forced them to communicate one on one. Ironically, they are going to develop an app to get the word out about National Unplugging Day.

While these efforts are for profit it is likely to affect the healthcare industry which generally runs as non-profit.

Excellent examples of the power of data visualization. 

Middle schoolers in Orange County decided to create an app for android where the proceeds would go to the Youth For Technology Fund. Youth for Technology gives and trains less fortunate youth in places like Africa and in the U.S. The game is called circuit crawler and they are working on improving the game and creating more levels.

NASA originally developed an LED device to monitor plant growth in space but has remarkable impact for cancer patients. High Emissivity Aluminiferous Luminescent Substrate, or HEALS, has helped reduced painful side effects from chemo, and other radiation treatment for cancer patients.

The technology will help with supply chain challenges such as yard management. Data from the RFID tags will be used with location-based information through a web-based application, InSight. These sensors developed by the non-profit DASH 7 alliance will also work for preventative maintenance
