Main Page - VotApedia - Free Audience Response by Mobile Phone - 0 views

  •
VotApedia is an audience response system that doesn't require issuing clickers or need specialist infrastructure. Known users can create surveys and edit the pages on this site. See if your your account has this functionality by looking for the tag "knownuser" next to your account name. If it doesn't and you want it contact Ken.Taylor@csiro.au. You can also look at other people's survey in the recent surveys, or participate in an active survey below. You can read the presentation at the Enterprise 2.0 conference. Audience response systems are widely used for education, but not commonly in Australia. It is hoped that removing the complication and expense of clickers will encourage the use of this teaching aid in Australian educational institutions. VotApedia is intended for co-located audiences but also works with remote audiences which has previously been a different class of application. Surveys are in a multiple choice question (MCQ) form. There is VotApedia Use and Development for more detail about this system.

Education Week: Smart Thinking About Educational Technology - 0 views

  • Simplistic thinking is often applied to educational technology. Either it’s the greatest approach to education ever invented or it’s a waste of money.
  • weak arguments, such as “students are digital natives, so we should use more technology,”
  • Digital technology provides a powerful toolkit, offering unique advantages (such as bridging time and distance, democratizing access to information and services, and leveraging exponential increases in computer power) that have helped transform other organizations, especially those based on information and knowledge
  • ...4 more annotations...
  • Making schools more engaging and relevant (thereby helping reduce the disastrous high school dropout rates in many districts); • Providing high-quality schooling for all students (including English-language learners and students with disabilities); • Attracting, preparing, and retaining high-quality teachers; • Increasing support for children from parents and the community; and • Requiring accountability for results (including providing more information about schools to policymakers and the public). Educators need to consider how digital tools are used to help achieve each of these goals, because transforming schools requires attention to all six, not only one.
  • Because these changes happened so quickly, it is a challenge to think clearly about schools’ uses of digital tools.
  • By using computers, the Internet, and other digital technologies in smart ways, schools are beginning to be transformed into the more modern, effective, responsive institutions that society needs.
  • these modifications are not yet widely known or understood.

The Trouble with Formative Assessment - Living in Dialogue - Education Week Teacher - 5 views

  •
Formative Assessment, assessing student performance routinely as instruction unfolds can transform teaching and learning. Writer actively experimented with giving more feedback to my students, using rubrics, models of student work, and having students assess their own work as well as that of their peers. Problem is Baltimore County school administrators have ordered all teachers to begin using a grading system next month that will require them to judge whether each of their students has mastered more than 100 specific skills. Elementary school teachers have classes of 25 kids while highschool teachers can have more than 100 students. Over the course of a year, many teachers would have to make as many as 10,000 marks indicating whether a child had learned a task.

GROWING UP DIGITAL - 8 views

  •
The content and technology are continually changing. This article reminds us that learners are also changing. For the past decade, faculty who won awards for teaching expressed concern that they could no longer hold the attention of their students. John Seely Brown, Chief Scientist at Xerox and director of its Palo Alto Research Center, hired 15 year olds to design future work environments and learning environments. He observed that the students did not conform to the traditional image of learners as permissive sponges. It requires us to rethink and redesign education for the Digital Age.

Interactive Map: Leaders and Laggards - 0 views

  •
Two years ago, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the Center for American Progress, and Frederick M. Hess of the American Enterprise Institute came together to grade the states on school performance. In that first Leaders and Laggards report, we found much to applaud but even more that requires urgent improvement. In this follow-up report, we turn our attention to the future, looking not at how states are performing today, but at what they are doing to prepare themselves for the challenges that lie ahead.

Tony Vincent's Learning in Hand - Blog - iPad 2's Display Mirrored on a Big Screen - 0 views

  •
"A feature that has long been request by educators has finally arrived in iPad 2: video mirroring. Video mirroring shows exactly what's on your device's screen on a second display, like a projector, television, or monitor. We're used to video mirroring with laptops--many teachers do this everyday. iPad 2 requires either the Apple VGA Adapter or Apple Digital AV Adapter. The VGA adapter connects to most projectors while the digital adapter connects to HDMI, which is common on newer televisions. Apple Digital AV Adapter also outputs sound while the VGA adapter outputs only video to the display."
