Stephen Downes: 'Connectivism' and Connective Knowledge - 3 views

  • Or, better yet, they can keep a record online somewhere.
  • Each time you access some content, create a blog post.
  • We don't want participants to simply repeat what other people have said

  • This is probably the hardest part of the process
  • that we are not starting from scratch.
  • What this isn't is a short cut.
  • It's hard, and it's sometimes embarrassing.
  • by neglecting the ingredients of genuine motivation -- autonomy, mastery, and purpose -- they limit what each of us can achieve
  • Knowledge is not something we can package neatly in a sentence and pass along as though it were a finished product. It is complicated, distributed, mixed with other concepts, looks differently to different people, is inexpressible, tacit, mutually understood but never articulated.

Hara Estroff Marano - ABC Conversations with Richard Fidler - 0 views

  •
"Hara Estroff Marano is Editor-at-Large of Psychology Today in the US. She argues that modern attitudes to parenting mean anxious mums and dads are crowding out the unsupervised play that kids used to enjoy. As a result children don't get much opportunity to solve their own problems, to practise co-operation and to test their leadership skills."

The Gates Foundation as a Philanthropic Case Study | LFA: Join The Conversation - Publi... - 0 views

  • “I believe in innovation and that the way you get innovation is you fund research and you learn the basic facts."

      agree with that
  • next to nothing is spent on education research. "That's partly because of the problem of who would do it. Who thinks of it as their business? The 50 states don't think of it that way, and schools of education are not about research.

just how Sydney Uni/Sydney Teacher's College informed my practice 30 years ago. Bathwater principle envoked. Why did it ever stop?
  •
Gates says his foundation is currently focusing on using private funds to inform and redirect how public education dollars are spent, specifically in the form of research.- my note "agreeable findings" concern as "research" can then rapidly influence policy.

Learning Reimagined: Participatory, Peer, Global, Online | DMLcentral - 4 views

  • I work from the first moments to persuade people that it's possible for all of us to learn together as a community in a more deeply satisfying and useful way than if students take responsibility only for their own learning

Twitlonger - When you talk too much for Twitter - 0 views

  •
Have you experienced Twitspeak overload? Do you break out into a sweat as the Twit character count goes into the final countdown phase? Then Twitlonger may be just the place for you At Twitlonger you can post to Twitter and not worry about the 140 characters limit. With Twitlonger, you can write what you need and once the 140 character limit is reached the tweet will have a link automatically added to it that will take you to Twitlonger where you can read it all. As the good folk at Twitlonger say, "It's like twitpic for text." Unfortunately to access the full 140+characters you'll have to leave your Twitter client and access the web.
  •
Twitlonger is a way to let you post to Twitter when 140 characters just isn't enough. With Twitlonger, you can write what you need and a link to what you said will automatically be posted to your Twitter account. It's like twitpic for text. Doesn't this go against the whole point of Twitter? Absolutely. Please don't use Twitlonger to get lazy with Twitter. If your tweet runs to 150 characters, you can almost certainly reword it to get it to fit. If, however, you want to make a point that fits in the conversation, or want to explain something technical, then this lets you stay within the Twitterverse without posting a dozen tweets. People that are interested can click on the link and see the full majesty of your wit and wisdom.
