WebKit Remote Debugging - Webkit Surfin Safari - 0 views

  •
excerpt:  As you might know, WebKit Web Inspector is implemented as an HTML + CSS + JavaScript web application. What you might not know is that Web Inspector can run outside of the browser environment and still provide complete set of its features to the end user. Debugging over the wire Running debugger outside the browser is interesting because mobile platforms do not often provide enough screen real estate for quality debugging; they have network stack and CPU specifics that often affect page load and runtime. Still, they are based on the WebCore rendering engine, they could have Web Inspector instrumentation running and hence expose valuable debugging information to the end user. Now that Web Inspector is functioning out-of-process over the serialized-message-channel, attaching Web Inspector window to the remote browser is possible. Here is an example of the remote debugging session using Chromium: 1. Start your target browser with the remote-debugging-port command line switch: Chromium --remote-debugging-port=9222

Chrome Developer Tools: Remote Debugging - Google Chrome Developer Tools - Google Code - 0 views

  •
Incredible.  I'm wondering if either Jason or florian has thought about using the Chrome JSON messaging layer to expose docx conversions to OTXML?  Essentially, when Florian breaks a .docx document, he only deals with the objects and how they are positioned (layout) on a page.  Once captured and described, these xObjects could then be converted to JSON.  The Chrome web client/ web server port (9222) could then, theoretically be used to observe the JSON xObjects?  Interesting. intro:  Under the hood, Chrome Developer Tools is a web application written in HTML, JavaScript and CSS. It has a special binding available at JavaScript runtime that allows interacting with chrome pages and instrumenting them. Interaction protocol consists of commands that are sent to the page and events that the page is generating. Although Chrome Developer Tools is the only client of this protocol, there are ways for third parties to bypass it and start instrumenting browser pages explicitly. We will describe the ways it could be done below. Contents Protocol Debugging over the wire Using debugger extension API

Silicon Valley Guru Steve Blank Welcomes The New Bubble And Says Microsoft Is Doomed - 0 views

  •
Great interview. Interesting statements about Microsoft's future (or lack thereof).    excerpt: Steve Blank is the closest thing Silicon Valley has to a guru. The serial entrepreneur turned writer and professor has a big theory: entrepreneurship is a skill that can be taught. At Stanford and Berkeley, Blank teaches scientists to get out of their labs and find real customers for their ideas -- without getting bogged down in the traditional MBA weeds of spreadsheets and revenue models. There are two major strategies. You either build, or you buy. What do you buy? You can buy IP, you buy teams and people, product lines, companies, P&Ls, bottom line. I think Google has tended to focus on teams and products. If you look at their most innovative counter to disruption, Android, it had nothing to do with the company, they bought it. Not only did they buy the technology, they bought the individual who's the driving force between what might keep them in business. The one thing they haven't figured out how to either build or buy is to counter Facebook. You look at Microsoft going through this -- Microsoft is the living dead. Microsoft is a standing joke now in the technology business. The one game you could see playing out is they buy Skype, they buy Nokia, Steve Elop finally injects some life into the company and replaces Ballmer and Microsoft reinvents itself. Elop is a great politician and a great IT guy, and maybe they could reinvent themselves along that axis. But it wil never happen as long as Steve Ballmer is Bill Gates's best friend. Microsoft is the new Wang. Remember Wang?.....................

Hands On With PayPal Check Scanning for Android: Mobile Technology News « - 0 views

  •
Android device owners have one less reason to drive to the bank now that PayPal has added check scanning to its software. PayPal today released an update to its mobile app for Google's platform that brings the feature: Users can snap a picture of a check with their Android 2.1 or better phone and have the amount automatically deposited to their PayPal account. The newest version of the mobile app, version 2.8, also allows the software to be stored on a handset's memory card, which can free up internal storage on the device. iPhone owners have had the check scanning feature since October of last year and they don't seem shy about using it. In a blog post today, Shimone Samuel, the Product Experience Manager for PayPal Mobile, says that iOS device owners have been scanning about a million dollars per month using the image capture feature with checks. I noticed some lengthy terms of service upon installation of the new PayPal app; notably that users are limited to $1,000 per day and $3,000 per month for check scans. After accepting the terms, I ran through a quick test by writing myself a quick check for $5; note that you can't write checks to "Cash" using the software.

Amir's Website for open source BitCoin:  Jason Calcanis "This Week in Startups". Bitcoin is a new digital currency offering many advantages over traditional and other electronic currencies. Nobody owns the bitcoin economy, and nobody controls it. Utilising an ingenious decentralized structure, bitcoin relies on cryptography and mathematics to ensure security and reliability. It is secure and reliable. It eliminates virtually all the overhead seen in traditional banking. Currently bitcoin lingers in the underworld of the internet and lacks the outside polish that can take this cryptocurrency from the garage to commerce. Our wiki contains a short introduction to this digital currency.

Download CSS Regions Protoype - Adobe Labs - 1 views

Yes!  Finally we have CSS Layout enabling professional typography.  Download includes a modified version of WebKit and a number of open source libraries. CSS Regions bring new properties to CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) that provide:     * text containers with custom shapes......     * exclusion shapes which text will wrap around......     * text that flows from one area into another. Demos showcase some of the concepts Adobe proposed to the  W3C with CSS Regions: content threads, content shapes and text exclusions. The samples require a mini-browser using a specially modified version of WebKit.

Forget Custom iPad Magazines: Onswipe Turns Any Site Into One - Technology Review - 0 views

  •
Move over Flipboard, Push Pop and TreeSaver.  Here comes OnSwipe.  Packaging a Web site for a highly interactive and mobile world just got easier. excerpt: OnSwipe does something web developers should have been racing to accomplish ever since the iPad was first unveiled: it makes a website -- any website -- into a tablet-friendly experience. (It's already available to everyone who publishes their blog on Wordpress.com.) It uses HTML5 to make a site feel like an app, even though it's running in the browser. Onswipe points to a future of tablet media delivery that is incredibly simple, even boring: Websites that are designed to look good on tablets. Given the history of creating alternate designs for sites in order to make them mobile-friendly, why anyone ever imagined it would be otherwise is baffling. Probably, it was wishful thinking. IPad magazine app sales are tanking. Media aggregation apps like Flipboard and Zite are re-atomizing publishers' content into pleasurable, full-screen, mostly ad-free experiences. The great do-over that tablets were to represent for publishers like Condé Nast -- a chance to put the free-content genie back in the bottle, and charge for admission -- appears to have gone bust. Onswipe and the startups that will inevitably follow in its wake are the final nail in the coffin of the dream of appification of magazines and other media content

Death of The Document - CIO Central - CIO Network - Forbes - 0 views

Well, not quite.  More IBM happy talk about interoperability and easy document interchange.  While i agree with the static versus interactive - collaborative document perspective, it's far more complicated. Today we have a world of "native"  docs and "visual" docs.   Native docs are bound to their authoring productivity environment, and are stubbornly NOT interchangeable.  Even for ODF and OOXML formats. Visual documents are spun from natives, and they are highly interchangeable, but interactively limited.  They lack the direct interaction of native authoring environments.  The Visual document phenomenon starts with PDF and the virtual print driver.  Any authoring application(s) in a productivity environment can print a PDF using the magic of the virtual print driver.   In 2008, when ISO stamped PDF with "accessibility tags", a new, highly interactive version of PDF was offically recognized.  We know this as "Tagged PDF".  And it has led the sweeping revolution of wide implementation of the paperless transaction process. The Visual Document phenomenon doesn't stop there.  The highly mobile WebKit revolution ushered in by the 2008 iPhone phenomenon led to wide acceptance of highly interactive and collaborative, but richly visual versions of SVG and HTML5-CSS3-JSON-JavaScript documents. Today we have SVG-HTML+ type visually immersive documents spun out of Server side publication presses such as FlipBoard, Cognito cComics, QWiki, Needle, Sports Illustrated, Push Pop Press, and TreeSaver to name but a few.   Clearly the visually immersive category of documents is exploding, but not for business - productivity documents.  Adobe has proposed a "CSS Regions" standard for richly immersive layout that might change that.  But mostly i think the problem for business documents, reports and forms is that they are "compound documents" bound to desktop productivity environments and workgroups. The great transition from desktop/workgroup productivity environme
