From Jen Blair: Have you ever... tried to print up something from the Internet and it ends up being 8 pages long because of all the "extra stuff" around the edges? Or it's a crossword puzzle that ends up covering 3 pages that you would somehow have to tape together? Don't be frustrated! Save paper! Use: http://www.printfriendly.com/ Simply go to the above site, paste in the URL you are wanting to print, and watch the magic as your 3 page printout somehow gets cut down to ONE!

Oregon Poetic Voices - 0 views

This was taken as excerpts from Melissa Dalton's post on Libs-Or: Oregon Poetic Voices (OPV) is a comprehensive digital archive of poetry readings that complements existing print collections of poetry across the state and is funded by the Library Services and Technology Act FFY2010. The state of Oregon possesses an unusually high number of nationally recognized writers, a very high proportion of whom are award-winning and otherwise notable poets. Additionally, there are active communities of emerging poets around the state, and poetry is regularly taught in the English curriculum of most Oregon schools. Until Oregon Poetic Voices began in 2010, there was no publicly accessible archive of recorded poetry by Oregon poets that could be used to maintain a record of poetry in performance, which is a vitally important aspect of interpretation and a valuable teaching tool. The Oregon Poetic Voices archive currently publishes over 200 prominent and emerging Oregon poets, including their biographies and poem texts alongside their recordings, and will soon feature historic performances recorded by KBOO, Fishtrap, and the Mountain Writers Series. There are also resources for educators, including curriculum guides and links to information about teaching poetry. http://listsmart.osl.state.or.us/pipermail/libs-or/2011-July/010664.html

Recognizing the need for poetry in our lives, the Oregon Poetic Voices Project (OPV) has begun to create a comprehensive digital archive of poetry readings that will complement existing print collections of poetry across the state.

Floor-etry | ALSC Blog - 0 views

Let me tell you about our Floor-etry. First, floor-etry is a poem on the floor. That's it. It's simple and vastly influential in the process of creating an early literacy environment.  We here at the Allen County Public Library  got the idea from Saroj Ghoting's website for early literacy. In a presentation put together by Dana Bjerke, Joanna Redman and  Kelly Wussow from the Hennepin County Library, you can flip through different slides and see inspiring ideas that make words accessible to even the littlest of patrons. We thought, "We can do that!"

And we did! We wrote a poem that is actually just a string of similes so the reader can start anywhere in the circle and the poem makes sense. We typed it up in HUGE, easy to read font, printed it out on bright paper and cut out the words. After cutting out the words, we laminated each one and added Velcro to the back for a temporary hold. We placed the poem in the front of our department in the shape of a (yellow) sun!

...create a quiz on this site, and print out the QR codes which provide students with the directions and the questions via a series of QR codes. You can cut them apart and have a treasure hunt or simply give the students the codes and allow them to answer the questions by scanning the QR code with their mobile device.

Each is a short presentation, less than 10 minutes.  All are effective and provide an important resources that I integrate into lessons.  I have used these videos here with upper-elementary students, middle school students, and even high school students.  The key is to include enriched content in a short, attention-grabbing way.  You will find that the formats and styles I use work with very wide and diverse age groups.

World Book Night - 0 views

Some of the text below applies to the 2013 event, but the site's URL stays the same year to year. "World Book Night 2013 is a celebration of literacy by publishers, bookstores, libraries and individuals who love books and reading. On World Book Night 2013, 25,000 'book givers' will each give away 20 copies of a specially-printed, not-for-resale WBN edition of book they have read and loved (from a list of 25-30 titles selected by librarians and booksellers) to complete strangers - people who may never have owned a book of their own. To promote this literacy event, libraries and bookstores - as organizational participants in the event - form a nationwide advocacy and distribution network." Last year was the inaugural event, which happens on April 23rd. If you want your library to participate as a distribution center, fill out the attached application by October 1, 2012. Specific responsibilities of official participants are outlined in the application. The deadline on the form indicates September 1st, but according to discussions on ALAConnect, it was extended by a month. Sign up for the mailing list to learn when applications go online annually: http://www.us.worldbooknight.org/component/forme/?fid=3

Thoughtful Books - 0 views

Critical Thinking Consortium: created this link to lessons/resources on "thoughtful books", some books are actually available online for printing and reference. "The Thoughtful Books series makes use of exemplary children's literature to help young readers learn to read critically and to thoughtfully consider ethical matters. Each resource in this series features specific tools supporting literacy development and encouraging the deliberataion of ethical considerations. Teachers and parents are encouraged to use the suggested activities to introduce the tools and then to encourage their young children to apply them in a variety of situations overtime, until the tools are used independently, selectively, and naturally."

What this tool can do for you: Help you better understand how to determine the "fairness" of a use under the U.S. Copyright Code.

I just used this to determine if I was violating Fair Use with the book trailer videos I'm posting onto Destiny. My "conclusion" showed that I was within Fair Use guidelines. I have printed the document and will keep it - hopefully I won't ever need it! Although not legally binding, this site is a very helpful tool in providing clear criteria to the Fair Use decision.
