The mission of the Hearing Health Foundation is to prevent and cure hearing loss and tinnitus through groundbreaking research and promote hearing health. HHF envisions a world where people can enjoy life without hearing loss and tinnitus. To advance this mission, the foundation has issued a Call for Applications for its 2018 Emerging Research Grants program for projects designed to explore new avenues in specified topic areas of hearing and balance science. For the 2018 ERG cycle, grants of up to $30,000 will be awarded for research in seven priority areas, including general hearing health, central auditory processing disorders, hearing loss in children, hyperacusis, Ménière's disease, tinnitus, and Usher's syndrome.

The McGovern Institute for Brain Research at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology was established in 2000 by Patrick J. McGovern and Lore Harp McGovern, with the goal of improving human welfare, communication, and understanding through their support for neuroscience research. The institute has announced a call for nominations for its twelfth annual Edward M. Scolnick Prize in Neuroscience. Now in its fifteenth year, the Scolnick Prize is designed to recognize outstanding advances in the field of neuroscience. The prize, which is endowed through a gift from Merck to the McGovern Institute, consists of a $150,000 award, plus an inscribed gift. In addition, the recipient will present a public lecture at the McGovern Institute in spring 2018. A gala dinner for the recipient and invited guests follows the prize lecture. Candidates for the award must be nominated by individuals affiliated with universities, hospitals, medicals schools, or research institutes, with a background in neuroscience. The goal of this funding opportunity announcement is to solicit applications focused on 1) providing data enablement for the open-science, systems-biology enterprise of the AMP-AD Target Discovery and Preclinical Validation Consortium supported through the companion FOA (RFA-AG-18-013) and 2) sustaining and expanding the big-data infrastructure of the AMP-AD Knowledge Portal as a collaborative research platform through which members of the Consortium, researchers at large, and citizen scientists can engage in rapid translational learning and contribute to the development of predictive models of AD and AD-related dementias.

The primary goal of the NIMH Career Transition Award for Tenure-Track and Tenured Intramural Investigators (K22) Program (hereafter abbreviated as the NIMH Career Transition K22 Program) is to provide support for career intramural investigators at NIMH who aim to transition from the Division of Intramural Research Programs (DIRP) to an independent research faculty position in the extramural community. The National Center for Injury Prevention and Control (NCIPC) is seeking applications from qualified organizations for Injury Control Research Center (ICRC) grants. These centers will conduct high quality research and help translate scientific discoveries into practice for the prevention and control of fatal and nonfatal injuries and violence that support NCIPC’s priorities and mission. ICRCs are expected to blend Outreach, Training and Education, and Research activities into a program to reduce the number, risk, and public health impact of injury and violence in the U.S. The over-arching goals for the NCIPC ICRC program are to: Build the scientific base for the prevention and control of fatal and nonfatal injuries and violence. Integrate, in the context of a national program, professionals from a wide spectrum of disciplines of epidemiology, behavioral and social sciences, medicine, biostatistics, public health, health economics, law, criminal justice, and engineering to perform research and provided technical expertise in order to prevent and control injuries and/or violence more effectively. Encourage investigators to propose research that involves intervention development or translation of effective programs among individuals, organizations, or communities. Provide technical assistance to injury and/or violence prevention and control programs in their geographic region, including other researchers; universities; medical institutions; community groups; state and local government agencies, public health agencies; and policy makers. The purpose of this research is to identify, implement, and evaluate the use of effective strategies and tools for provider and patient use to taper and/or discontinue opioids, benzodiazepines, and other medications in which risk outweighs benefits to prevent falls, overdose, and other injuries among community dwelling older adults.

The purpose of the funding opportunity announcement (FOA) is to encourage research on the etiology of depressive symptoms that occur in the context of a sudden onset acute illness. Although it is known that depressive symptoms may linger and affect functional recovery long after physical recovery from an acute insult, there is a gap in knowledge about the pathobiology that may underlie these incident depressive symptoms. A greater understanding of the etiological factors that contribute to and/or mitigate a trajectory of depressive symptoms may inform a personalized, holistic approach to managing recovery from acute illness.

The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to stimulate collaborative research to understand the biological mechanisms of aging in dental, oral, and craniofacial (DOC) tissues, as they relate to parallel processes in other tissues and organs. The Organization for Autism Research is inviting applications for its Graduate Research Grant program. Established in 2004, the grant program is intended to encourage and support students conducting research pursuant to graduate and post-graduate studies in disciplines related to assessment, intervention, and support of learners with autism spectrum disorders and their families. The Esther A. & Joseph Klingenstein Fund, in partnership with the Simons Foundation, has announced the opening of its 2018 competition for research fellowships in the neurosciences. Previously known as the Klingenstein Fellowship Awards in the Neurosciences, this year's awards are the second from this joint initiative. The awards are presented to highly promising early-career scientists. At a critical juncture in young investigators' careers when funding can be a challenge, the awards are intended to promote higher-risk, and potentially higher-reward, projects. Payable over three years, the $225,000 award may be used for salary support, research assistants, equipment, or any other purpose that promotes the scientific activities of the fellow. To be eligible, investigators must hold a PhD and/or MD degree and have completed all their research training, including postdoctoral training. In addition, the applicant must be an independent investigator within four years (between July 1, 2014, and July 1, 2018) of receiving his/her first tenure-track appointment at a university or medical institution.

The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to support the early stage testing of pharmacologic interventions with novel mechanisms of action or device-based interventions, for the treatment of symptoms or domains of altered functions in individuals with mental illness (e.g. schizophrenia, depression, autism, obsessive compulsive disorder, anxiety, bipolar disorder, etc.). Early intervention studies are also encouraged where symptoms of a disorder have been identified in subjects (a prodromal phase), prior to full diagnostic criteria being met. Ultimately, this FOA is intended to support early stage testing of pharmacologic or device-based interventions using a protocol design where the presumed mechanism of action of the intervention is adequately tested, to provide meaningful information where target modulation yields a dose-dependent neurophysiological/clinical/behavioral effect. Pediatric, adult and geriatric focused interventions are appropriate for this FOA. This R33 FOA supports single phased clinical trial awards. DHAPP's goal is to maximize program impact by focusing on the drivers of the epidemic specific to the military, and to support the development of interventions and programs that address these issues. DHAPP works with militaries of foreign countries to devise plans based on the following process:* Meet with key partners in country to determine provisional major program areas and other technical assistance needs DoD HIV/AIDS Prevention Program (DHAPP), based at the Naval Health Research Center (NHRC) in San Diego, California, provides technical assistance, management, and administrative support of the global HIV/AIDS prevention, care, and treatment for foreign militaries. DHAPP administers funding, conducts training, and provides technical assistance to participating militaries. In addition DHAPP staff members, both HQ and country based, serve on most of the PEPFAR Technical Working Groups (TWG) and Core teams through the Office of the U.S. Global AIDS Coordinator. DHAPP provides HIV program execution and monitors outcomes, with staff that includes active duty military, civil service, and contractor personnel.

The purpose of this initiative is to support collaborative research between Tribal Epidemiology Centers and extramural investigators on topics related to minority health and health disparities in American Indian / Alaska Native (AI/AN) populations.

The NIH Research Education Program (R25) supports research education activities in the mission areas of the NIH. The over-arching goal of this National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) R25 program is to support educational activities that complement and/or enhance the training of a workforce to meet the nation's biomedical, behavioral and clinical research needs and advance the priorities outlined in the Office of AIDS Research (OAR) Annual Strategic Plan and the research program priorities of the NIMH Division of AIDS Research (DAR). To accomplish the stated over-arching goal, this FOA will support creative educational activities with a primary focus on Research Experiences and Mentoring Activities that either capitalize on existing networks of collaborating investigators or develop institute-based research education programs. Both research experiences and mentoring activities are required; research experiences are expected to be primary. Research Education Programs are expected to enhance the professional development of the participants and foster a career trajectory towards independent research in the mental health of HIV/AIDS.
