The application for the 2018 Boren Awards is now open at www.borenawards.org! Boren Awards fund U.S. undergraduate and graduate language study and research abroad in world regions critical to U.S. national interests (including Africa, Asia, Central & Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East). The countries of Western Europe, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand are excluded. The Boren Scholarships provide up to $20,000 for undergraduate students for language‐focused study abroad. The Boren Fellowships provide up to $30,000 for graduate students to fund language study, graduate‐level research, and academic internships abroad. The U.S. Embassy Public Affairs Section - Small Grants Programs awards grants to U.S. and Nicaraguan individuals and non-profit and non-governmental organizations with legal status to support innovative projects focused on empowering Nicaraguans through educational and entrepreneurial opportunities including promoting a bi-lingual workforce and preventing gender based violence in Managua and Puerto Cabezas. The Small Grants Program cannot fund the following activities: projects supporting primarily partisan political or religious activities; international air travel unless essential to the goal of the project; humanitarian or charitable activities; for-profit, commercial or trade activities; fundraising campaign; scientific research; institutional development per se or support of an organization; activities that duplicate existing projects; construction; vehicles; salaries as the main purpose of the grant; and refreshments as the main element of the grant.

The purpose of this FOA is to support investigator-initiated R21 applications that will inform our understanding of the typical and atypical patterns of language and literacy development of dual language learners (DLLs) in the United States. Applicants are encouraged to take advantage of advances in the language sciences and related fields to identify and clarify specific cognitive, linguistic, neurobiological, and sociocultural factors associated with normal and impaired language and literacy acquisition in young DLL populations.

ASHA's Advancing Academic-Research Careers Award is intended to support the academic research careers of junior-level faculty in the field of communication sciences and disorders. The program funds projects that include both a teaching and a research component. Recipients work in conjunction with mentors to develop mentored teaching and research plans tailored to the applicant's career stage. The plans - which should propose specific teaching and research activities to be completed under the guidance of the mentors during the eighteen-month funding period - are submitted as part of the AARC application. In support of ASHA's strategic objectives, applications that focus the mentored teaching and/or research component on clinical practice research, implementation science, and interprofessional education and interprofessional practice are particularly encouraged. In 2018, ASHA will award up to ten grants of $5,000 each. To be eligible, applicants must have a research doctoral degree (PhD or equivalent); a full-time tenure or non-tenure track faculty appointment in a CSD department in an academic institution in the United States at the time of disbursement; primary responsibilities that include teaching and research; and fewer than six years of teaching/research experience or status below the level of associate professor.

The Administration for Children and Families (ACF), Administration for Native Americans (ANA) announces the availability of Fiscal Year (FY) 2018 funds for the Native American Language Preservation and Maintenance program. The Native Language Preservation and Maintenance program provides funding for projects to support assessments of the status of the native languages in an established community, as well as the planning, designing, restoration, and implementing of native language curriculum and education projects to support a community's language preservation goals. Native American communities include American Indian tribes (federally-recognized and non-federally recognized), Native Hawaiians, Alaskan Natives, and Native American Pacific Islanders.

The American Research Institute in Turkey takes pleasure in inviting applications for one to three advanced long-term fellowships for research in Turkey made possible by support from the National Endowment for the Humanities. The fields of study cover all periods of history in the general range of the humanities and include humanistically oriented aspects of the social sciences, prehistory, history, art, archaeology, literature, and linguistics, as well as interdisciplinary aspects of cultural history. The fellowships tenures range from four to twelve continuous months during 2018-2019. Stipends of $4,200 per month are awarded on the basis of individual proposals. Scholars who have completed their formal training by the application deadline and plan to carry out research in Turkey for four months or longer may apply. They may be U.S. citizens or three-year residents of the U.S. Please consult ARIT U.S. office for questions of eligibility. Advanced scholars may also apply for ARIT Fellowships in the Humanities and Social Sciences.

Scholarly Editions and Translations grants support the preparation of editions and translations of pre-existing texts of value to the humanities that are currently inaccessible or available only in inadequate editions or transcriptions. Typically, the texts and documents are significant literary, philosophical, and historical materials; but other types of work, such as musical notation, are also eligible. Projects must be undertaken by at least one editor or translator and one other collaborating scholar. These grants support full-time or part-time activities for periods of one to three years. Applicants should demonstrate familiarity with the best practices recommended by the Association for Documentary Editing or the Modern Language Association Committee on Scholarly Editions. Translation projects should also explain the theory and method adopted for the particular work to be translated. Editions and translations produced with NEH support contain scholarly and critical apparatus appropriate to their subject matter and format. This usually means introductions and annotations that provide essential information about a text's form, transmission, and historical and intellectual context. Proposals for editions of foreign language materials in the original language are eligible for funding, as well as proposals for editions of translated materials.

"Reading for All" activity is to improve reading outcomes for children with disabilities (CwDs) in grades 1 - 3 in USAID-supported Early Grade Reading Program (EGRP) districts. The three main objectives of the Reading for All activity are to improve data quality on CwDs; enhance institutional and technical capacity at various levels to deliver quality reading instruction and support to CwDs; and test inclusive instructional models that can be scaled for specific groups of CwDs.

The Office of English Language Programs of the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs announces an open competition for proposals to advance the Bureau's objectives through support of academic exchanges that will result in the improvement of English teaching capacity around the world and the enhancement of mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries through exchanges of U.S. English language educators to all regions of the world. The EL Fellow and Specialist Program builds bridges of mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries through exchanges of U.S. English language educators. The EL Fellow and Specialist Program sends talented, highly qualified U.S. citizens in the area of Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) or a closely related field on approximately ten month Fellow exchanges or short-term (two-weeks or more) Specialist assignments at educational institutions in all regions of the world. Through U.S. embassy-designated projects, EL Fellows and Specialists share their expertise, build English teaching capacity abroad, hone their skills, and gain international experience. Upon returning to the United States, they share their experiences and acquired knowledge with their communities and professional colleagues. Projects are carried out with host country ministries of education, universities, teacher-training institutions, NGOs, binational centers, and other English language teaching institutions.

Papers are solicited for the Association for the Advancement of Baltic Studies (AABS) conference to be held June 1-3, 2018, at Stanford University in Palo Alto, California.  Papers are especially encouraged on topics related to Jewish history and culture in the Baltics.  Graduate students are encouraged to submit proposals.  Travel grants are available.  Deadline for proposals is October 15. 

The Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship is accepting applications for U.S. students studying abroad in 2018.The Gilman scholarship is a U.S. Department of State grant program that enables students with limited finances to study or intern abroad. The scholarship is open to U.S. students who receive the Federal Pell Grant at a two-year or four-year college or university to participate in education or intern abroad programs across the globe. The Gilman is a generous scholarship that allows students to go abroad when they normally cannot afford to," Howard said. "Additionally, after being awarded the scholarship I received invitations to take advantage of the many services the scholarship provided that help students get ready to go abroad, how to acclimate while abroad, and how to readjust when they get back. There is also a strong support system with alumni and more opportunities to stay involved. I don't think that there is any reason not to apply if you're eligible!" Award amounts will vary depending on the length of study and student need. Applicants who are studying a critical need language while abroad in a country in which the language is predominantly spoken can apply for a supplemental award of up to $3,000, for a combined total of $8,000.

This initiative is designed to connect Japan scholars from the U.S., Southeast Asia, and Japan in order to enhance their collective scholarship through collaborative projects and exchanges, as well as to advance Japanese studies in these three regions. The foundation hopes that Japan scholars and students from all three regions and across many disciplines will benefit mutually from the creation of scholarly networks and the sharing of Japanese Studies resources, research methodology, and practical collaborative work.

The National Endowment for the Humanities offers the Dialogues on the Experience of War program as part of its current initiative, Standing Together: The Humanities and the Experience of War. The program supports the study and discussion of important humanities sources about war, in the belief that these sources can help U.S. military veterans and others think more deeply about the issues raised by war and military service. Although the program is primarily designed to reach military veterans, men and women in active service, military families, and interested members of the public may also participate. The program awards grants of up to $100,000 that will support * the convening of at least two discussion programs for no fewer than fifteen participants; and * the creation of a preparatory program to recruit and train program discussion leaders (NEH Discussion Leaders). Discussion programs may take place on college and university campuses, in veterans' centers, at public libraries and museums, and at other community venues.

The TESOL International Association is accepting applications to its Tina B. Carver Fund. Through the fund, grants of up to $400 will be awarded for the purchase of student classroom learning materials and/or teacher-related materials (e.g., ancillary materials that can be used in conjunction with textbooks or other instruction materials) in support of adult ESL education programs in the United States. Priority will be given to programs that serve hard-to-reach students with limited resources (e.g., beginning literacy to intermediate-low ESL students). To be eligible, applicants must be a TESOL member or member of a TESOL affiliate.

This funding partnership between the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) supports projects to develop and advance knowledge concerning endangered human languages. Made urgent by the imminent death of roughly half of the approximately 7000 currently used languages, this effort aims to exploit advances in information technology to build computational infrastructure for endangered language research. The program supports projects that contribute to data management and archiving, and to the development of the next generation of researchers. Funding can support fieldwork and other activities relevant to the digital recording, documenting, and archiving of endangered languages, including the preparation of lexicons, grammars, text samples, and databases. Funding will be available in the form of one- to three-year senior research grants as well as fellowships from six to twelve months.

The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to encourage basic or clinical research applications that investigate central neural mechanisms of age-related hearing loss in older adults and/or in relevant animal models. This FOA is driven by the need to address a major gap in our understanding of the central pathways and neural networks that are involved in hearing loss, and how these may be altered in the context of the aging brain, as well as how natural aging influences central auditory plasticity.

The primary goal of the funding opportunity is to engage English teachers in training programs that will strengthen English teaching quality and capacity in the Dominican Republic. The target population for this training program will be public school teachers, teachers from the Ministry of Higher Education's English Immersion Program and teachers from the binational centers (Instituto Cultural Dominico-Americano and Centro Cultural Dominico-Americano). Institutions should include a description of the interview and selection procedures and assessment methods for the proposed training program(s). Participants and Audiences: a. License at least five teachers or teacher trainers as TESOL Trainers Target audience: Teachers or Supervisors/Teacher Trainers from the Instituto Cultural Dominico-Americano's Teacher Training Center and/or English School b. Train at least 80 English pre-service teachers and/or in-service teachers in the communicative approach in support of the new English curriculum implemented by the Ministry of Education of the Dominican Republic in the northern, eastern, southern and/or capital region.
