    The purpose of this funding opportunity announcement (FOA) is to support exploratory/developmental research that explores the premise that fertility status can be a marker for overall health. It is clear that chronic conditions such as cancer, diabetes, and obesity can impair fertility, however less is known about the extent to which fertility status can impact or act as a marker for overall health. Data suggest that infertility is not necessarily a unique disease of the reproductive axis, but is often physiologically or genetically linked with other diseases and conditions. Recent epidemiologic studies demonstrate links between fertility status in both males and females and various somatic diseases and disorders. Taken together, these data strongly suggest that fertility status can be a window into overall health. This FOA focuses on studies evaluating fertility as a marker for overall health and therefore applications that look at the effects of a disease or disorder on fertility are outside the scope of this program.

    DC will strengthen the U.S. public health system’s response to public health or healthcare crises by providing specialized support to State, Tribal, Local and Territorial health departments (STLTs) when engaged in a response. Because STLTs vary widely in capacity and expertise - as well as in the demographics and disease burdens of the populations they serve - an emergency in any location is likely to reveal areas in which they need assistance to launch and sustain effective response activities. The purpose of this NOFO is (1) to establish a pool of non-governmental organizations capable of rapidly providing essential expertise to governmental public health entities involved in a response, and (2) to fund select awardees to provide that support, when required, based on CDC’s determination of need. The role of the awardee will be to function as a rapid provider of information and/or resources, as well as a coordinator of the project management components involved. Awardees will primarily support public health departments, but may be engaged to support CDC programs also involved in the response. Awardees will perform activities in the following two strategy domains: STRATEGY 1: Ensure Effective Process Implementation Process is a critical success factor in response efforts, where lives may depend on the speed of a transaction, placement of personnel, or delivery of equipment.

    This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) for R34 applications seeks to support: (a) pilot and/or feasibility testing of innovative new, revised, or adapted prevention intervention approaches to prevent or delay the initiation and onset of drug and alcohol use, the progression to problem use or alcohol and other substance use disorder, reduce drinking and driving and deaths related to impaired driving andthe drug- or alcohol-related acquisition or transmission of HIV infection and viral hepatitis among diverse populations and settings; and (b) pre-trial feasibility testing for prevention services and systems research. It is expected that research conducted via this R34 mechanism will consist of early stage efficacy, effectiveness or services research that will provide intervention pilot and/or feasibility data that is a pre-requisite for preparing and submitting subsequent applications for larger scale drug or alcohol abuse prevention and/or drug- or alcohol-related HIV prevention intervention studies. This R34 FOA does not support applications for which the sole focus is development of intervention protocols, manuals, or the standardization of protocols; rather, any development work must be imbedded within a pilot/feasibility study.Of particular interest are prevention interventions targeting the healthcare system.

Development and Testing of Novel Interventions to Improve HIV Prevention, Care, and Pro... - 0 views

    This FOA provides resources to support (a) pilot or feasibility studies of new or adapted interventions to prevent HIV infection among populations where substance use may be a contributing factor; (b) pilot or feasibility studies of new or adapted interventions to improve the care of HIV infection among populations where substance use is prevalent, including interventions that integrate treatment for substance use disorders and HIV infection; or (c) pilot or feasibility studies to increase the scale, uptake, delivery, and/or quality of HIV prevention or care interventions with established evidence of efficacy. Both primary and secondary prevention will be supported. The full range of substance use will be considered including problematic episodic use and substance use disorders, as well as a full range of substances and modes of administration. The most important consideration is that substance use may affect transmission directly as in the case of injection or may affect transmission risk behavior. Domestic and overseas populations will be considered, with particular attention to populations with disproportionate burden of HIV infection and those where HIV infection and/or drug use are emergent.

    Specifically this program aims to strengthen the public health workforce through tailored training and technical assistance involving collaborative, community-based projects.     SUMMARY OF WORK: The non-federal entity will perform the required program support to: (1) provide technical assistance and support related to the successful completion of National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) and Environmental Condition of Property (ECP) documentation for integrated and interdisciplinary environmental planning; (2) support the installation in the proper disclosure technical environmental information to the public; and (3) enhance government environmental planning and decision making during the NEPA process by supporting the collection and analysis of technical environmental information related to scoping, alternative analysis, and direct, indirect, and cumulative environmental impacts. BACKGROUND: Fort Leonard Wood currently consists of 61,410 acres and is designated as an active Installation Management Command (IMCOM) installation. Fort Leonard Wood is located just south of Waynesville and St. Robert, in Pulaski County, Missouri located in the northern Ozark Highland region of south-central Missouri. The installation encompasses 61,000 acres of primarily upland oak-hickory forest, 19/25 miles of permanent/intermittent streams, and 240 acres of impoundments that support an abundance of terrestrial and aquatic flora and fauna, including sensitive species. ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS: All responsible, non-federal entities submitting funding requests that meet the requirements in the scope of work will be considered for this funding opportunity. STATUTORY AUTHORITY: Title 16 U.S.C. Section 670c-1 provides, in part, that "[t]he Secretary of a military department may enter into cooperative agreements…with nongovernmental organizations" for the purposes of "[t]he maintenance and improvement of natural resources on, or to benefit natural and historic research on, military installations and State-owned National Guard installations."

State Public Health Approaches to Addressing Arthritis - 0 views

    Arthritis has a profound economic, societal and personal impact. Medical care costs and earnings losses among adults with arthritis were over $303 billion in 2013.(1) Arthritis affects more than one in four adults in the United States, or 54 million+ adults which will increase to 78 million by 2040, and limits 24 million in performing daily tasks.(2) One in 3 adults in rural areas has arthritis and over half of these have arthritis-attributable activity limitation.(3) Arthritis is significant, not just because of its negative impact on function, physical activity and quality of life, but because it is associated with leading causes of death, such as heart disease and diabetes.(4,5) Arthritis can also limit physical activity, which is recommended management for all of these conditions. The rising number of adults with arthritis and associated pain and activity limitations, and its ability to complicate the management of other chronic conditions and risk factors responsible for death, presents a critical public health problem.(2) Increased physical activity and participation in self-management education programs can help adults with arthritis reduce or manage pain and limitations.(6) The American College of Rheumatology's 2012 osteoarthritis management guidelines recommend exercise as a key, nondrug strategy to manage arthritis symptoms.(7) Adults with arthritis can reduce pain and activity limitations by up to 40% by engaging in PA and other management strategies.

    The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to elucidate the etiology and pathogenesis of the neurocognitive complications associated with type 2 diabetes (T2D) with the ultimate goal of informing future strategies to mitigate the risk of these complications. Applications should propose expansions of ongoing human studies of well characterized T2D cohorts or cohorts comparing T2D with non-diabetic populations.  Such expansions might include the addition of comprehensive neurocognitive measures (e.g., cognitive testing, neuroimaging, and biomarkers), clinical measures (e.g., insulin resistance, HbA1c), and/or collection of data on other risk factors (e.g., diet, obesity, micro- and macro-vascular disease, inflammation). It must be clearly explained how the collection of additional data will contribute to elucidation of the basis of neurocognitive sequelae of T2D.

    The purpose of this FOA is to encourage applications that seek to conduct studies of the visual system. This FOA will support applications that either Those that involve human subjects, but are not NIH-defined clinical trials (see NOT-OD-15-015); or Those that are NIH-defined clinical trials and are designed to address either: 1) mechanisms underlying human vision in health and disease; or 2) interventions that entail procedures with minimal risk to subjects. A mechanistic trial is defined as "A study designed to understand a biological or behavioral process, the pathophysiology of a disease, or the mechanism of action of an intervention. "Minimal risk" means that the probability and magnitude of harm or discomfort anticipated in the research are not greater in and of themselves than those ordinarily encountered in daily life or during the performance of routine physical or psychological examinations or tests. NIH-defined clinical trial applications that are neither mechanistic nor minimal risk are not eligible for this FOA. Large-scale clinical trials, human gene-transfer and stem cell therapy trials, and other complex or high resource- or safety-risk clinical trials are not appropriate for this FOA. Applicants are strongly advised to consult with NEI program staff prior to submitting an application with human subjects to determine the appropriate funding opportunity.
