    This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) solicits U01 applications for the establishment of a clinical consortium, the Type 1 Diabetes in Acute Pancreatitis Consortium (T1DAPC), composed of one Data Coordinating Center (DCC) and up to 10 Clinical Centers (CC), to conduct studies on Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1D) that occurs after or as a consequence of one or more episodes of acute pancreatitis. Applications for the Clinical Centers (CC) are submitted in response to a separate FOA: RFA-DK-19-022: Type 1 Diabetes in Acute Pancreatitis Consortium Clinical Centers (T1DAPC-CC) (U01). The applicant for the Data Coordinating Center (DCC) must have experience serving as the DCC for studies on complex, clinical conditions, like the occurrence of diabetes mellitus (DM) after or as a consequence of one or more episodes of acute pancreatitis. The Consortium will form multi-disciplinary teams composed of members from the CCs and the DCC to undertake a prospective longitudinal observational study of the occurrence of diabetes that occurs during an acute pancreatitis episode or subsequently, with an emphasis on type 1 diabetes (T1D). The study will be designed to gain insight into the incidence, clinical evolution, etiology, type and pathophysiology of the T1D and other forms of diabetes after acute pancreatitis.. The Consortia will also undertake studies on the identification of immune and genetic risk factors and biomarkers which predict the development of T1D in a racially, ethnically, and geographically diverse population of subjects who have recovered from one or more episodes of acute pancreatitis due to various identifiable etiologies. The DCC will provide overall project coordination, administration, quality control, data management and biostatistical support.

    The purpose of this FOA is to provide support for innovative research into the role of extracellular RNA (exRNA) in the development of alcohol-related diseases and end-organ injuries. As used here, the term exRNA refers to RNA molecules circulating outside of cells, either within vesicles or associated with carrier molecules. It is anticipated that this FOA will generate data that may lead to breakthroughs in our understanding of the role of exRNA communication in the initiation, progression and maintenance of the diverse medical disorders caused by excessive, long-term alcohol consumption. In the future this knowledge may be critical in the diagnosis, treatment and management of vulnerable patient populations debilitated by the vast array of alcohol-induced pathologies and enable clinicians to improve disease outcomes and, consequently, public health. In addition, research supported by this FOA may also provide information on the mechanistic basis of the health benefits of moderate alcohol consumption.

Coordinating Center for the HIV/AIDS and Substance Use Cohorts Program (U24) - 0 views

    The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) supports a program of longitudinal cohorts to address emerging and high priority research on HIV/AIDS in the context of injection and non-injection substance abuse.  These cohorts provide a strong resource platform for current and future collaborative efforts with other investigators to address emerging questions related to HIV pathogenesis, prevention, and treatment in the context of substance abuse, as well as to foster the creativity and efficiency of investigator-initiated research projects. The diverse research activities among these cohorts include basic immunologic, and virologic studies, as well as studies on HIV prevention and treatment, and the co-morbidities and co-infections associated with HIV and substance abuse.  NIDA has determined that a coordinating center (CC) is needed in order to take advantage of these rich sources of data and bio-specimens and optimize collaborations among both the cohort investigators and other researchers not funded under the cohort program. In addition, the CC is expected to establish a virtual repository, and facilitate the leadership of the cohorts steering committee (SC), consisting of representatives from the NIDA-funded cohorts and NIDA staff. At this time, NIDA is soliciting  cooperative agreement applications for a CC to support the collaborative efforts of the cohorts that are currently funded by NIDA.

    The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Food and Nutrition Service (FNS), through the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC), is responsible for providing Federal grants to States for supplemental foods, health care referrals, and nutrition education (including breastfeeding promotion and support) for low-income pregnant, breastfeeding, and non-breastfeeding postpartum women, and to infants and children up to age five who are found to be at nutritional risk. The legislative authority for this grant announcement is contained in the Child Nutrition Act of 1966 Section 17 (g) (5)[1] as amended and Section 1472 of the National Agriculture Research, Extension, and Teaching Policy Act of 1977, 7 U.S.C. 3318, codified at 7 CFR 2.19(a)(3)(x) in January 2009. This is an announcement of the availability of funds for one new cooperative agreement for FY 2017-2019 with a public or private Academic or Research Institution. In this funding cycle, the USDA anticipates awarding up to $1,000,000 in grant funding to support the creation of a Participant Research Innovation Laboratory for administering and awarding sub-grants for researcher-initiated projects that develop and test strategies to encourage retention of children in WIC. Developed strategies should focus on WIC service delivery sites or retail environments. Further, strategies must acknowledge the social and cultural diversity of WIC participants and those eligible for the Program.

    The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) is interested in funding a diverse set of projects that develop, test and evaluate various simulation approaches for the purpose of improving the safe delivery of health care. Simulation in health care serves multiple purposes. As a training technique, it exposes individuals and teams to realistic clinical challenges through the use of mannequins, task trainers, virtual reality, standardized patients or other forms, and allows participants to experience in real-time the consequences of their decisions and actions. The principal advantage of simulation is that it provides a safe environment for health care practitioners to acquire valuable experience without putting patients at risk. Simulation also can be used as a test-bed to improve clinical processes and to identify failure modes or other areas of concern in new procedures and technologies that might otherwise be unanticipated and serve as threats to patient safety. Yet another application of simulation focuses on the establishment of valid and reliable measures of clinical performance competency and their potential use for credentialing and certification purposes. The foremost aim of the announcement is to advance patient safety. Keeping this aim in mind, applications that address a variety of simulation techniques, clinical settings, provider groups, priority populations, and patient conditions are welcomed.
