The Brander Beacons Cancer Research awards grants in the memory of Christopher E. Brander, the inventor of the LOCalizer™ from Health Beacons, a medical device that revolutionized the standard of care for marking breast lesions for surgical removal. BBCR works to advance its mission in four principal ways: supporting academic research institutions as they research tools and techniques that can increase the accuracy of and improve outcomes in biopsies and tumor removal procedures; identifying ways to improve patient outcomes and access; investing in emerging research and researchers; and serving as an active contributor to the culture of access and innovation in cancer care. To that end, BBCR is accepting applications from organizations doing breakthrough research focused on the prevention, treatment, and cures for breast and prostate cancer.

The Era of Hope Scholar Award supports individuals early in their careers who have demonstrated significant potential to effect meaningful change in breast cancer. These individuals should be exceptionally talented scientists who have shown that they are the "best and brightest" in their field(s) through extraordinary creativity, vision, innovation, and productivity. They should have demonstrated experience in forming effective partnerships and collaborations and must exhibit strong potential for future leadership in breast cancer research. As the intent of the Era of Hope Scholar Award is to recognize creative and innovative individuals rather than projects, the central features of the award are the demonstrated ability of the individual named as the Principal Investigator (PI) in the application to go beyond conventional thinking in his/her field and the innovative contribution that the PI can make toward ending breast cancer. The application should articulate a vision that challenges current dogma and demonstrates an ability to look beyond tradition and convention.

The American Society of Breast Surgeons Foundation awards grants related to patient breast care and medical education. The foundation is a charitable organization dedicated to improving the standard of care for breast disease patients by providing support for medical and patient education, advancing breast disease research and diagnosis and treatment technologies, and offering programs and services to medical professionals and their patients.

Because the intent of the Innovator Award mechanism is to recognize these remarkably creative and innovative visionary individuals, rather than projects, the central feature of the award is the innovative contribution that the Principal Investigator (PI) can make toward ending breast cancer. The PI should have a record of challenging the status quo, shifting paradigms by changing a field of research or approach to patient care, exhibiting high levels of creativity, and demonstrating promise for continued innovation in future work. These rare individuals will be able to articulate a vision for ending breast cancer that challenges current dogma and demonstrates an ability to look beyond tradition and convention. The PI is also expected to be established in his/her field and have demonstrated success at forming and leading effective partnerships and collaborations. To further the development of innovative individuals and spark the generation of novel ideas, applications are required to incorporate the mentoring of promising junior investigators.

Impact: Research supported by the Breakthrough Award will have the potential for a major impact and accelerate progress toward ending breast cancer. The impact may be near-term or long-term, but must move beyond a minor advancement and have the potential to lead to a new approach that is fundamentally better than interventions already approved or in clinical development. Applications are expected to identify the breast cancer patients or at-risk individuals who would ultimately benefit from the proposed research.

The BCRP Distinguished Investigator Award enables established visionary leaders from any field to pursue innovative ideas that could accelerate progress toward ending breast cancer. These individuals should be exceptionally talented researchers who have shown that they are leaders in their field(s) through extraordinary creativity, vision, and productivity. The Principal Investigator (PI) is expected to have a renowned reputation as a researcher who has made groundbreaking contributions to advancing his/her field. He/she should have demonstrated success at forming and leading effective partnerships and collaborations. Through his/her distinguished record of research and leadership, the PI should demonstrate the potential to make unique and significant advances in breast cancer.The central feature of the Distinguished Investigator Award is that the PI must propose research that is a fundamental, conceptual shift from his/her track record of research and addresses one or more BCRP overarching challenge(s).

The aim of the CDA is to support the next generation of researchers and to significantly improve outcomes and quality of life for breast cancer patients. The award will provide up to $100,000 per year for two years to be combined with matching funds or in kind contribution from the applicant's institution. Neither ASTRO nor BCRF will pay indirect costs as part of this award. One award will be funded. Research must be focused on understanding or treatment of breast cancer and include use or impact of radiation treatment.

We are requesting applications for pilot projects that focus on new methods to improve detection of early breast cancer and are especially interested in the development of new techniques in the areas of biological or immunologic methods of early detection. It is our hope that pilot projects will provide preliminary data that leads to applications for more substantial peer-reviewed funding.

The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to promote research on interventions, based in healthcare settings, designed to reduce overscreening for breast, cervical, or colorectal cancers among average-risk older adults. While ongoing efforts to promote screening have been successful, there is growing concern that these tests may be overused, thereby subjecting adults to unnecessary risks. Overscreening older adults may be driven by factors at the individual, healthcare team, healthcare system and community organization levels. Therefore, research is needed both to understand the factors that drive overuse and to develop and test interventions that will reduce overuse in healthcare delivery systems. Research supported by this FOA should propose to intervene at two or more levels, and should measure outcomes at two or more levels, while accounting for interactions that occur between levels. Research supported by this FOA should enhance knowledge and consequences of overscreening to improve the health, independence, and quality of life of older adults.

This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) encourages applications that develop and test multilevel interventions to improve follow-up to abnormal screening tests for breast, cervical, colorectal, or lung cancers. Improving follow-up to abnormal screening tests is dependent on factors at the patient, provider, clinical team, clinic, healthcare institution, or community setting levels. Appropriate applications for this FOA should propose to intervene at two or more levels, and measure outcomes at three or more levels, while accounting for interactions that occur between and across levels.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, Division for Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention, announces the opportunity to apply for funds to implement the Well-Integrated Screening and Evaluation for Women Across the Nation (WISEWOMAN) program. The WISEWOMAN program extends preventive health services to women who are participants of the CDC-funded National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program (NBCCEDP). These extended preventive health services include assessment of cardiovascular risk factors and provision of services to reduce those risks through improved diet, physical activity, tobacco cessation, and medication adherence support. A focus on the health systems and community-clinical links that are supportive of these preventive health services is required.
