The Department of Defense (DoD) announces the Fiscal Year 2019 Defense University Research Instrumentation Program (DURIP). DURIP is designed to improve the capabilities of accredited United States (U.S.) institutions of higher education to conduct research and to educate scientists and engineers in areas important to national defense, by providing funds for the acquisition of research equipment or instrumentation. For-profit organizations are not eligible for DURIP funding. We refer to eligible institutions of higher education as universities in the rest of this announcement. DURIP is part of the University Research Initiative (URI).

DARPA seeks proposals to design, build, demonstrate, and validate a nonsurgical neural interface system to broaden the applicability of neural interfaces to the able-bodied warfighter. The final technology aims to enable neural recording and stimulation with sub-millimeter spatial resolution. See attached BAA package for full details.

The Michael J. Fox Foundation will award one-to-two-year grants to test non-pharmacological interventions for the treatment of gait and balance disturbances in people with Parkinson's disease (PD). We are particularly interested in proof-of-concept, validation and data-analysis projects. The National Ataxia Foundation is committed to funding the best science relevant to hereditary and sporadic types of ataxia in both basic and translational research.

SOFIA is a near‐space observatory that returns to base after every flight. Therefore, unlike most space missions, its scientific instruments can be exchanged periodically to accommodate changing science requirements and to incorporate new technologies, which is a tremendous advantage over space-based observatories. A key part of the SOFIA project has always been to include an instrumentation program that would periodically introduce new technologies in order to enable new scientific frontiers to be explored. NASA is soliciting proposals for compelling science investigations that are enabled by the development of one or more new Science Instruments (SI) and/or upgrades to existing science instruments.

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is soliciting innovative research proposals in the area of developing hardware and software architectures with physically provable guarantees to isolate high risk transactions and to enable systems with multilevel data security assertions.

The DARPA Microsystems Technology Office is soliciting research proposals for the development of advanced RF mixed-mode foundry processes, building blocks, and novel high frequency mixed-mode devices on a CMOS fabrication platform. It is expected that such advances will enable new DoD applications including high capacity, robust communications, radars, and precision sensors.

NineSigma's client is a global supplier of high performance materials for a variety of high temperature applications. Transient liquids process relies on the liquid reaction with time leading to novel solid crystalline compounds at high temperatures. The transient liquid formed evaporates over time to leave pores enabling fast sintering within the bulk phase. Currently, NineSigma's client incorporates Boron source into Alumina compounds which forms the transient liquid at <1000 °C. The objective of the current search is to identify potential mineral additives that enable the formation of the transient liquids at lower temperatures and ideally below 700 °C. The client is open to all solutions from academia and industry.

The Defense Sciences Office at the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is soliciting innovative research proposals in the area of advanced chemical and biological detector technologies to support a networked system of sensors for the detection, interdiction, and deterrence of clandestine weapons of mass destruction (WMD). Proposed research should investigate innovative approaches that enable revolutionary advances in science, devices, or systems. Specifically excluded is research that primarily results in evolutionary improvements to the existing state of practice.

CBER seeks to support the application of novel technologies for advanced manufacturing of complex biologic products, and innovative analytical approaches to improve product manufacturing and quality through active research.

Type 1 diabetes (T1D) results in part from the autoimmune-mediated dysfunction or destruction of insulin-producing pancreatic beta cells. This funding opportunity is for projects that seek to discover ways to change the course of the disease by directly establishing tolerance. Immune responses could be engineered for tolerance induction through the manipulation of antigens, cells, or cellular microenvironments. Collaborations between T1D experts and investigators from other fields, including (but not limited to) cancer immunology and biomaterials engineering, are especially encouraged.

The Public Affairs Section (PAS) of the U.S. Embassy in New Delhi announces an open competition through the Public Diplomacy Grants program for a Cooperative Agreement to implement one or both activities of a "TechCamp" project focused on growing women-owned social enterprises in India and Pakistan which includes a workshop and follow-on. The Division of Chemical, Bioengineering and Environmental Transport (CBET) in the Engineering Directorate of the National Science Foundation (NSF) is partnering with The Center for the Advancement of Science in Space (CASIS) to solicit research projects in the general field of tissue engineering that can utilize the International Space Station (ISS) National Lab to conduct research that will benefit life on Earth. U.S. entities including academic institutions, non-profit independent research labs and academic-commercial teams are eligible to submit proposals.

The Sloan and Ford Foundations would like to fund a set of research projects to further study these dynamics, with an eye toward better understanding the economics, maintenance and sustainability of digital infrastructure.
