Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CISE) Research Initiation Initiative - 0 views

    The NSF Directorate for Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CISE) seeks to award grants intended to support research independence among early-career academicians who specifically lack access to adequate organizational or other resources. It is expected that funds obtained through this program will be used to support untenured faculty or research scientists (or equivalent) in their first three years in a primary academic position after the PhD, but not more than five years after completion of their PhD. Applicants for this program may not yet have received any other grants or contracts in the PI role from any department, agency, or institution of the federal government, including from the CAREER program or any other program, post-PhD, regardless of the size of the grant or contract, with certain exceptions as noted below. Serving as co-PI, Senior Personnel, Postdoctoral Fellow, or other Fellow does not count against this eligibility rule. Importantly, the CRII program seeks to provide essential resources to enable early-career PIs to launch their research careers. For the purposes of this program, CISE defines "essential resources" as those that (a) the PI does not otherwise have, including through organizational or other funding; and (b) are critical for the PI to conduct early-career research that will enable research independence. In particular, this program is not appropriate for PIs who already have access to resources to conduct any early-career research.

    In accordance with 2 CFR 910.126(b), eligibility for award is restricted to U.S. accredited institutions of higher education with graduate programs of study in physics, applied physics, accelerator science, and/or engineering, and with at least one faculty member working specifically in the field of accelerator physics. Minority serving institutions (e.g., Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), Black-serving non-HBCUs, Hispanic-serving institutions, Asian-serving institutions, and American Indian-serving institutions) with these types of graduate study programs are encouraged to apply. Universities with cooperative programs, which share coursework between two or more colleges and universities to meet the above requirements are also encouraged to apply. DOE/NNSA National Laboratory Contractors DOE/NNSA National Laboratory contractor applicants are not eligible for a prime award under this FOA, but may be proposed as a team member on another entity's application if their cognizant DOE/NNSA Contracting Officer provides written authorization. This authorization should be submitted with the application as part of the Budget Justification for DOE/NNSA National Laboratory Contractor File.

    NSF's Harnessing the Data Revolution (HDR) Big Idea is a national-scale activity to enable new modes of data-driven discovery that will allow fundamental questions to be asked and answered at the frontiers of science and engineering.     The HDR Institutes activity seeks to create an integrated fabric of interrelated institutes that can accelerate discovery and innovation in multiple areas of data-intensive science and engineering. The HDR Institutes will support convergence between science and engineering research communities as well as expertise in data science foundations, systems, applications, and cyberinfrastructure.     Society's overwhelming reliance on this complex cyberspace, however, has exposed its fragility and vulnerabilities that defy existing cyber-defense measures; corporations, agencies, national infrastructure and individuals continue to suffer cyber-attacks. Achieving a truly secure cyberspace requires addressing both challenging scientific and engineering problems involving many components of a system, and vulnerabilities that stem from human behaviors and choices. Examining the fundamentals of security and privacy as a multidisciplinary subject can lead to fundamentally new ways to design, build and operate cyber systems, protect existing infrastructure, and motivate and educate individuals about cybersecurity. The Secure and Trustworthy Cyberspace (SaTC) program welcomes proposals that address cybersecurity and privacy, and draw on expertise in one or more of these areas: computing, communication and information sciences; engineering; economics; education; mathematics; statistics; and social and behavioral sciences. Proposals that advance the field of cybersecurity and privacy within a single discipline or interdisciplinary efforts that span multiple disciplines are both encouraged.

    Community consultations have indicated continuing interest in the capabilities offered by a Storm Penetrating Aircraft. The 2017 "Requirements for In Situ and Remote Sensing Capabilities in Convective and Turbulent Environments (C-RITE) Community Workshop" brought together over 100 community members to discuss next generation observational technologies and evolving scientific requirements. An outcome of that meeting was the development of a set of technical and operational requirements for a potential Storm Penetrating Aircraft that could be deployed as a multi-user facility for acquiring in-situ observations of key parameters associated with the evolution of severe convective storms.

    The Division of Ocean Sciences (OCE) Integrative Programs Section (IPS) is soliciting proposals from eligible organizations to serve as the Operating Institution (OI) for the third ship in the Regional Class Research Vessels (RCRV #3). Planning for construction of new RCRVs for the U.S. Academic Research Fleet (ARF) has been ongoing at the National Science Foundation for more than a decade. In early 2012 a Solicitation (NSF-12-558) was issued for the design and construction of up to three RCRVs. The solicitation provided that the Awardee would serve as Lead Institution (LI) for the Design and Construction of all vessels in the Class with the option to serve as Operator of the Lead Ship. The solicitation further indicated that selection of OIs for any additional vessels would be conducted by means of a separate competition that would be completed prior to delivery of the first RCRV.

The resulting innovations offer new levels of economic opportunity and growth, safety and security, and health and wellness. At the same time, broad acceptance of large-scale deployments of AI systems relies critically on their trustworthiness which, in turn, depends upon the collective ability to ensure, assess, and ultimately demonstrate the fairness, transparency, explainability, and accountability of such systems. Importantly, the beneficial effects of AI systems should be broadly available across all segments of society. NSF and Amazon are partnering to jointly support computational research focused on fairness in AI, with the goal of contributing to trustworthy AI systems that are readily accepted and deployed to tackle grand challenges facing society. Specific topics of interest include, but are not limited to transparency, explainability, accountability, potential adverse biases and effects, mitigation strategies, validation of fairness, and considerations of inclusivity. Funded projects will enable broadened acceptance of AI systems, helping the U.S. further capitalize on the potential of AI technologies. Although Amazon provides partial funding for this program, it will not play a role in the selection of proposals for award.

Whitaker International Program Seeks Proposals in Field of Biomedical Engineering | RFP... - 0 views

    Recognizing that scientific and technological endeavors were becoming increasingly international, the foundation decided to facilitate the development of biomedical engineers with international experience and expertise. To serve this objective, the Whitaker International Fellows and Scholar program was initiated in 2005 by a fifteen-year endowment to the Institute of International Education. In the years since, the program has enabled nearly two hundred young biomedical engineers to spend one or two years overseas studying, doing research, and participating in collaborative projects. In accordance with the original plan, the last group of grantees received support through 2018. To further promote the overall program objective, in 2018 several grantees received funding to pursue initiatives of their own design. That set of activities, now designated as Concluding Initiative #1, will end at the end of 2020.

The primary goal for the current search is to find a polymer matrix, blend or composition that decomposes at 100°C. Potential solutions which currently decompose at 250°C with a clear path to reducing (e.g. functionalising, processing, etc.) this decomposition temperature are also of high interest. The decomposition temperature is linked to the fibre length and therefore consultants and/or academics who have extensive experience in this area are highly valued.

    Recently FDA launched a series of strategic efforts designed to improve the national capacity to study use and impact of medical devices in the real-world setting.  The National Evaluation System for health Technology (NEST) was created with the goals of leveraging electronic health information captured from the routine clinical use of marketed health technology.  Since in the world of medical devices today, clinical registries collect and maintain detailed, curated clinical data on millions of patients receiving diagnostics and treatments involving health technologies, they can provide critical infrastructure that can be used for a variety of analyses related to real world patient care and outcomes.  To address some of the inherent and modifiable limitations of the registries, the model of strategically Coordinated Registry Networks (CRNs) was recommended by the National Medical Device Registry Task Force (NMDRTF) and further developed by Medical Device Epidemiology Network (MDEpiNet).
