The eXploration Systems and Habitation (X-Hab) 2019 Academic Innovation Challenge is a university-level challenge designed to develop strategic partnerships and collaborations with universities. It has been organized to help bridge strategic knowledge gaps and increase knowledge in capabilities and technology risk reduction related to NASA's vision and missions. In 2016, the X-Hab Challenge scope was formally extended to include other areas of Exploration Systems as well as habitation topics. The competition is intended to link with senior- and graduate-level design curricula that emphasize hands-on design, research, development, and manufacturing of functional prototypical subsystems that enable functionality for space habitats and deep space exploration missions. NASA will directly benefit from the challenge by sponsoring the development of innovative concepts and technologies from universities, which will result in novel ideas and solutions that could be applied to exploration. The Advanced Exploration Systems (AES) Division will offer multiple awards of $15k - $50k each to design and produce studies or functional products of interest to the AES Division (see Section 3.2, X-Hab Proposal Topic List) as proposed by university teams according to their interests and expertise. The prototypes produced by the university teams (examples of which are shown in Figure 1) may be integrated into existing NASA-built operational prototypes. Universities interested in participating will submit X-Hab proposals, which will be reviewed by technical experts; subsequent down-selection will determine which projects will be funded. X-Hab university teams will be required to complete their products for evaluation by the AES Division in May 2019. Universities may form collaborations to perform as a single distributed project team.

This opportunity aims to facilitate the translation of NSF's technology investments in Engineering Research Centers (ERC) and in Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) projects into the market place. Furthermore, in instances where an ERC is funded with a mission to support the public good through the implementation of critical public engineering systems (the infrastructure), this includes facilitating implementations that realize the intended public benefit. The specific goals of this opportunity are to: Speed the translation of ERC-generated research and technology advances to the marketplace or its implementation into critical public engineered systems and engage undergraduate and graduate students more directly in the innovation process through collaboration between an ERC and a small business concern, (OPTION 1) and Strengthen the research capacity of active NSF SBIR/STTR Phase II awardees to speed the entry of their innovations into the marketplace and broaden its portfolio of marketable products through collaboration with an ERC (OPTION 2).

The Institute for Research on Innovation and Science is accepting applications for its 2018 IRIS Awards, an annual program that supports researchers who use IRIS data to address questions about the social and economic returns of investments in research. Through the program, IRIS seeks to enable fundamental research on the results of public and private investments that support discovery, innovation, and education on the campuses of U.S. universities. Up to $15,000 for dissertations awards and up to $30,000 for early career and established researcher awards will be awarded to the recipient's institution. Funds can be used for personnel (e.g., research assistance, salaries, or stipend if recipient is a student), equipment, supplies, travel (may include travel mandated by the award), and other expenses (e.g., professional development and training). Awards may include 15 percent overhead or indirect costs to be paid as a part of the award total. Proposals must emphasize the use of IRIS data in projects that address open issues in the study of science and technology and science policy. Topics of particular interest include but are not limited to new methods to estimate social and economic return on investment for funding from various sources (federal, philanthropic, industrial, and institutional); the relationship between research training, career outcomes, and the downstream productivity of employers; the relationship between different funding sources and mechanisms and the structure and outcomes of collaboration within and across campuses; the distinctive contribution university research makes to regional economic development and resilience; and the effects different funding sources and mechanisms have on research teams and the productivity and efficiency of the academic research enterprise as a whole

JDRF is launching an initiative to accelerate the development of "open-protocol" automated insulin delivery (artificial pancreas) systems. JDRF is soliciting proposals from insulin pump manufacturers and continuous glucose monitor (CGM) manufacturers that will enable seamless, secure connectivity with other devices (e.g., by using Bluetooth technology). JDRF remains committed to supporting the traditional, proprietary commercial development of artificial pancreas systems; in parallel, JDRF will launch efforts in the United States and globally to partner with regulators and legal experts to establish predictable approval pathways for systems that allow for secure, open-protocol-based control through commercially developed devices and software

The Center would like to enhance its efforts to support analytic and methodological research in support of its surveys, and to engage in the education and training of researchers in the use of large-scale nationally representative datasets.  NCSES welcomes efforts by the research community to use NCSES data for research on the science and technology enterprise, to develop improved survey methodologies for NCSES surveys, to create and improve indicators of S&T activities and resources, and strengthen methodologies to analyze and disseminate S&T statistical data. To that end, NCSES invites proposals for individual or multi-investigator research projects, doctoral dissertation improvement awards, workshops, experimental research, survey research and data collection and dissemination projects under its program for Research on the Science and Technology Enterprise:  Statistics and Surveys.

The International Research Experiences for Students (IRES) program supports development of globally-engaged U.S. science and engineering students capable of performing in an international research environment at the forefront of science and engineering.  The IRES program supports active research participation by students enrolled as undergraduates or graduate students in any of the areas of research funded by the National Science Foundation.  IRES projects involve students in meaningful ways in ongoing research programs or in research projects specifically designed for the IRES program. 

The "Campus Cyberinfrastructure - Infrastructure, Innovation and Engineering (CC*IIE)" program invests in improvements and re-engineering at the campus level to support a range of data transfers supporting computational science and computer networks and systems research. The program also supports Network Integration activities tied to achieving higher levels of performance, reliability and predictability for science applications and distributed research projects. CC*IIE awards will be made in six areas. Data Driven Networking Infrastructure for the Campus and Researcher awards will be supported at up to $500,000 total for up to 2 years. Network Design and Implementation for Small Institutions awards will be supported at up to $350,000 total for up to two years. Network Integration and Applied Innovation awards will be supported at up to $1,000,000 total for up to 2 years. Identity and Access Management Integration awards will be supported at up to $300,000 total for up to two years. Campus CI Engineer awards will be made at up to $400,000 total for up to 2 years. Regional Coordination and Partnership in Advanced Networking awards will be made at up to $150,000 for up to 2 years.

This could include, but is not limited to: (a) alternative and clean energy sources; (b) environmental and social issues as related to specific or broader energy and resource management issues; (c) economic, environmental, and social costs/benefits of energy development (alternative and fossil fuel); (d) hazard and risk assessment of different methods of energy production on various endpoints/receptors; (e) development of frameworks for managing energy development; and (f) restoration/reclamation of lands damaged by energy extraction

Funding is awarded to universities and institutions nationwide for projects in research that: - Focus on important and emerging areas of research - Have the potential to develop breakthrough technologies, instrumentation or methodologies - Are innovative, distinctive and interdisciplinary - Demonstrate a high level of risk due to unconventional approaches, or by challenging the prevailing paradigm - Have the potential for transformative impact, such as the founding of a new field of research, the enabling of observations not previously possible, or the altered perception of a previously intractable problem - Does not focus on clinical or translational research, treatment trials or research for the sole purpose of drug development - Fall outside the mission of public funding agencies - Demonstrate that private philanthropy generally, and the W. M. Keck Foundation in particular, is essential to the project's success

DOE SC hereby invites applications for support under the Early Career Research Program in the following program areas: Advanced Scientific Computing Research (ASCR); Basic Energy Sciences (BES); Biological and Environmental Research (BER); Fusion Energy Sciences (FES); High Energy Physics (HEP); Nuclear Physics (NP); Isotope R&D and Production (DOE IP); or Accelerator R&D and Production (ARDAP). The purpose of this program is to support the development of individual research programs of outstanding scientists early in their careers and to stimulate research careers in the areas supported by SC.
