    This solicitation addresses the overlapping objectives of theNational Space Weather Strategy and Action Plan(NSW-SAP) and theNational Strategic Computing Initiative(NSCI) Update through a pilot program. The goal of this pilot program is to transform development of predictive modeling of the coupled evolution of the magnetized solar atmosphere and the solar wind, and their interaction with the Earth's magnetosphere and upper atmosphere. This requires advancing our understanding of the necessary and sufficient requirements of model complexity, computational performance, and observational inputs. The pilot program is also expected to directly contribute to the long-term goal of creating space weather models with quantifiable predictive capability.

Topics inlowering barriers to entryshould focus on lowering the barriers for conducting fundamental roboticsresearchand research on integrated robotics application. This may include development of open-source co-robot hardware and software, as well as widely-accessible testbeds. Outreach or using robots in educational programs do not, by themselves, lower the barriers to entry for robotics research. Topics insocietal impactinclude fundamental research to establish and infuse robotics into educational curricula, advance the robotics workforce through education pathways, and explore the social, economic, ethical, security, and legal implications of our future with ubiquitous collaborative robots.

    A recent report suggests that more than 50 percent of domestic practicing physicians experience burnout. Due to the extremely stressful work environment, patient population, and 24/7 operations with irregular work hours in emergency departments (EDs), ED physicians experience an even higher prevalence of burnout, with up to 65 percent of physicians and residents meeting criteria for burnout. The Reducing Burnout through Emergency Department Design RPF seeks proposals with the potential to reimagine how academic medical center emergency departments are designed by sparking innovation in an environment that has remained largely unchanged for decades. Through the RFP, a single grant of $40,000 will be awarded in support of research that investigates how the design of emergency department environments in academic medical centers impacts physician and resident burnout. Interdisciplinary collaboration is strongly encouraged.

    NSF has long supported transformative research in artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML). The resulting innovations offer new levels of economic opportunity and growth, safety and security, and health and wellness. At the same time, broad acceptance of large-scale deployments of AI systems relies critically on their trustworthiness which, in turn, depends upon the collective ability to ensure, assess, and ultimately demonstrate the fairness, transparency, explainability, and accountability of such systems. Importantly, the beneficial effects of AI systems should be broadly available across all segments of society. NSF and Amazon are partnering to jointly support computational research focused on fairness in AI, with the goal of contributing to trustworthy AI systems that are readily accepted and deployed to tackle grand challenges facing society. Specific topics of interest include, but are not limited to transparency, explainability, accountability, potential adverse biases and effects, mitigation strategies, validation of fairness, and considerations of inclusivity. Funded projects will enable broadened acceptance of AI systems, helping the U.S. further capitalize on the potential of AI technologies. Although Amazon provides partial funding for this program, it will not play a role in the selection of proposals for award.
