    Students enrolled in any PhD program are eligible to apply, as are those who earned a PhD in 2016 or 2017. Given candidates with comparative skills and preparation, preference will be given to European-based scholars.

    A 1-2 pages proposal (double-spaced, 12 pt font) explaining your overall project and what specific research activities you will undertake with the funds if granted. Fc-Dependent Mechanisms of Antibody-Mediated Killing (U01 Clinical Trial Not Allowed) - 0 views

    This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) invites applications from institutions and organizations to conduct research focused on elucidating mechanisms of Fc-dependent, antibody-mediated killing of infected or aberrant cells, or antibody-mediated therapeutic ablation of cells implicated in immune pathologies, including autoimmune and allergic diseases. Studies supported by this FOA are expected to define variables that affect efficiencies of antibody-dependent cellular cytotoxicity (ADCC) and/or antibody-dependent cell-mediated phagocytosis (ADCP), both in vitro and in vivo. U01 awardees will be expected to attend annual Program Progress/Steering Committee meetings and present progress to fellow awardees and to NIAID program staff. The goal of the meetings is to facilitate collaborations between funded investigators and to accelerate development of mechanistic models that incorporate the collective findings of this program. Advances in our understanding of these Fc-dependent killing mechanisms will inform more efficient design and optimization of ablative antibody therapeutics and may also inform design of vaccines that preferentially elicit ADCC- or ADCP-efficient antibody responses. This FOA uses the U01 grant mechanism, while the companion FOA, PA-19-xxx, uses the R21 mechanism. High risk/high reward projects with limited preliminary data or utilize existing data may be most appropriate for the R21 mechanism.

    The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) intends to publish a series of Funding Opportunity Announcements (FOA) for Cooperative Agreements to solicit applications for a network of researchers collaborating across justice and community-based service settings to transform community-level responses to opioid misuse and opioid use disorder in justice-involved populations. Opioid misuse and opioid use disorder consequences exist at the intersection of health and justice systems. Improving the capacity of the justice system to respond to opioid crisis with evidence-based approaches that include the use of medications for OUD requires strong partnerships between justice systems and healthcare as well as other community based organizations. Supporting the development of these relationships and novel models of justice-healthcare and other community collaborations is a critical target in addressing the current opioid crisis. NIDA is interested in launching a network of investigators who can rapidly conduct research to address the opioid crisis in justice settings. A variety of research methods will be used, including clinical trials, implementation science research, policy evaluations and/or modeling approaches. This Notice is being provided to allow potential applicants sufficient time to develop meaningful collaborations and appropriate projects. This FOA is expected to use a multicomponent cooperative agreement mechanism. The FOA is expected to be published in October 2018 with an expected application due date in December 2018.

    HIV-associated neurological disorders (HAND) persist in up to 50% of HIV-patients even when HIV replication is suppressed by combination antiretroviral therapy (cART), which transformed HIV/AIDS from a fatal illness into a chronically managed long-term condition. HIV does not infect neurons, but infects microglia and macrophages in the brain, causing HAND associated neuropathology. HAND epitomizes a series of disorders include Asymptomatic Neurocognitive Impairment (ANI), Mild Neurocognitive Disorder (MND), and HIV-Associated Dementia (HAD). These neurocognitive deficits interfere with psychomotor speed and coordination, diminishing memory and executive functions, and reduce quality of life in long-standing aviremic HIV-positive patients. These clinical challenges mandate research for a better understanding of HIV neuropathology; however, currently there are no effective approaches for HIV-infected live human brain studies or realistic HIV-infected animal models for HIV neuropathology.

    Proposed projects MUST include the following components. Applications which lack these three components will be considered non-responsive to the FOA and will not be reviewed. The major thrust of the project MUST involve exploitation of induced microglia and cerebral organoids generated from patient derived iPSC lines to better understand the molecular and cellular mechanisms of HIV-Associated Neurocognitive Disorder (HAND). At least one aim or sub-aim MUST also involve either 1. opioid, cannabinoid, methamphetamine, nicotinic, dopaminergic, or other signaling pathways relevant to addictive substance use, or 2. exposure to addictive substances, or 3. analysis of samples from patients that have used addictive substances or have SUDs.

    The Chan Zuckerberg Initiative (CZI) seeks to support up to 10 Imaging Scientists who will work at the interface of biology, microscopy hardware, and imaging software at imaging centers across the United States. "Imaging Scientists" might be engineers, physicists, mathematicians, computer scientists, or biologists who have focused on technology development in either microscopy or data analysis fields. The primary goal of the program is to increase interactions between biologists and technology experts. The Imaging Scientists will have expertise in microscopy hardware and/or imaging software. A successful "Imaging Program" will employ an Imaging Scientist who: a) works collaboratively with experimental biologists on projects at the imaging center; b) participates in courses that disseminate advanced microscopy methods and analysis; c) trains students and postdocs in imaging technology; d) participates in a network of CZI Imaging Scientists to identify needs and drive advances in the imaging field; e) attends twice-yearly CZI scientific workshops and meetings in imaging and adjacent biomedical areas. Each grant will fund salary and fringe benefits for an Imaging Scientist at the center, a modest travel and teaching budget, plus 15% indirect costs. The award period is three years plus an additional two years if the Imaging Program passes a review at year three.

    Tests should work with human cells at a concentration of 1x106 - 1x108 cells per mL in growth media. They should characterize / quantify the populations of cell immunophenotypes in the sample.

     

    Lab tests are welcome. GSK would be especially interested in analytical techniques that could be carried out at or close to the patient's bedside.
