Expanding Hydropower and Pumped Storage's Contribution to Grid Resiliency and Reliabilit - 0 views

Through this Request for Information (RFI), the United States Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE), Water Power Technologies Office (WPTO) seeks input on new research to maximize the value of hydropower's contribution to grid resiliency and reliability today and into the future. This strategy includes pumped storage and traditional hydropower, and covers both new technology design as well as modeling and analysis to assess the range of value streams hydropower provides in the current and future power grid. This research will build targeted insight into economic, policy and technological barriers, inform future hydropower technology development, and improve the tools by which investment and operational decisions are made. WPTO seeks concise feedback from all relevant stakeholders. Responses to this RFI must be submitted electronically to WPTORFI@ee.doe.gov no later than 5:00pm (ET) on April 6, 2018. Transformational Pre-combustion Carbon Capture Technologies - 0 views

    The mission of DOE's Fossil Energy R&D Program is to ensure the nation can continue to rely on traditional resources for clean, secure and affordable energy while enhancing environmental protection. The Carbon Capture program focuses on developing technologies to control emissions from either post-combustion units (e.g., pulverized coal) or pre-combustion (e.g., Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle, or IGCC). First Generation technologies (i.e. those that are currently being demonstrated or that are commercially available) exist, and Second Generation Technologies (i.e., those that include technology components currently in R&D and are expected to be ready for demonstration in the 2020-2025 timeframe) have shown potential for improvement towards an economic goal for cost of capture at less than $40/tonne, but are still cost prohibitive for broad deployment to the existing coal fleet. For Fiscal Year (FY) 2018, the Carbon Capture Program will solicit applications under this FOA to develop technologies in the area of pre-combustion carbon capture. Approaches that look at either hydrogen (H2) separation or carbon dioxide (CO2) separation will be accepted. The carbon capture technologies developed through this FOA will have direct application to coal gasification processes where coal derived synthesis gas or hydrogen are produced. Additionally, because gasification technology is often used to produce industrial chemicals, the technologies developed through this FOA will also be directly applicable to industrial gasifiers.

    This funding opportunity announcement (FOA) focuses on sensitivity and tolerance mechanisms underlying the development of alcohol use disorders. The intent of this FOA is to: (1) develop hypotheses about cellular, molecular or network mechanisms that regulate sensitivity and tolerance to alcohol, and (2) develop quantitative models to predict the development of tolerance and the progression to alcohol dependence. These objectives will be accomplished with a Phased Innovation (R21/R33) mechanism, in which secondary data analysis or pilot studies can occur during the R21 phase, and research testing the hypotheses can be expanded in the R33 phase. The transition to the R33 phase will be determined by NIAAA program staff after evaluation of the achievement of specific milestones set for the R21 phase.     This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) requests applications to explore human pancreatic tissues for the discovery of early biomarkers of T1D pathogenesis, the description of specific signaling or processing pathways that may contribute to the asymptomatic phase of T1D, the development of clinical diagnostic tools for the detection and staging of early T1D in at-risk or recently-diagnosed individuals, and/or the identification of therapeutic targets for the development of preventative or early treatment strategies. Successful applicants will join the Consortium on Beta Cell Death and Survival (CBDS), whose mission is to better define and detect the mechanisms of beta cell stress and destruction central to the development of T1D in humans, with the long-term goal of detecting beta cell destruction and protecting the residual beta cell mass in T1D patients as early as possible in the disease process, and of preventing the progression to autoimmunity. The CBDS is part of a collaborative research framework, the Human Islet Research Network (HIRN, https://hirnetwork.org), whose overall mission is to support innovative and collaborative translational research to understand how human beta cells are lost in T1D, and to find innovative strategies to protect and replace functional beta cell mass in humans. This FOA will only support studies with a primary focus on increasing our understanding of human disease biology (as opposed to rodent or other animal models). This FOA will not accept applications proposing a clinical trial.

    The Albert Einstein Fellowship supports creative, interdisciplinary thought by giving young scholars the chance to pursue research outside their previous area of work.

    Candidates must be under 35 and hold a university degree in the humanities, in the social sciences, or in the natural sciences. Applications for 2019 should include a CV, a two-page project proposal, and two letters of recommendation. All documents must be received by April 15, 2018.

    At the end of the fellowship period, the fellow will be expected to present his or her project in a public lecture at the Einstein Forum and at the Daimler and Benz Foundation. The Einstein Fellowship is not intended for applicants who wish to complete an academic study they have already begun.

    A successful application must demonstrate the quality, originality, and feasibility of the proposed project, as well as the superior intellectual development of the applicant. It is not relevant whether the applicant has begun working toward, or currently holds, a PhD. The proposed project need not be entirely completed during the time of the fellowship, but can be the beginning of a longer project.

    PLEASE NOTE THAT NO FELLOWSHIPS WILL BE GIVEN FOR DISSERTATION RESEARCH. THE PROPOSED PROJECT MUST BE SIGNIFICANTLY DIFFERENT IN CONTENT, AND PREFERABLY FIELD AND FORM, FROM THE APPLICANT'S PREVIOUS WORK.
