This FOA encourages circumscribed projects to generate fundamental knowledge of affective processes with key consequences for single (e.g., cancer screening) and multiple (e.g., adherence to oral chemotherapy regimen) event decisions and behaviors across the cancer control continuum. The FOA solicits applications that involve collaboration among cancer control researchers and those from scientific disciplines not traditionally connected to cancer control applications (e.g., affective and cognitive neuroscience, decision science, consumer science) to elucidate perplexing and understudied problems in affective and decision sciences with downstream implications for cancer prevention and control.

This funding opportunity announcement (FOA) invites applications for research in cancer control and population sciences. The overarching goal is to provide support to promote research efforts on novel scientific ideas that have the potential to substantially advance cancer research in statistical and analytic methods, epidemiology, cancer survivorship, cancer-related behaviors and behavioral interventions, health care delivery, and implementation science.

The Investigator-Initiated Translational Research Award (IITRA) supports translational research that will develop promising ideas in lung cancer into clinical applications. Translational research may be defined as an integration of basic science and clinical observations. Observations that drive a research idea may originate from a laboratory discovery, population-based studies, or a clinician's firsthand knowledge of patient care. The ultimate goal of translational research is to move a concept or observation forward into clinical application. However, Principal Investigators (PIs) should not view translational research as a one-way continuum from bench to bedside. The research plan must involve a reciprocal flow of ideas and information between basic and clinical science. This mechanism is intended to fund a broad range of translational studies, including, but not limited to, the following: * Studies advancing/translating in vitro and/or animal studies to applications with human samples/cohorts. * Late-stage preclinical work leading to/preparing for a clinical trial, e.g., Investigational New Drug (IND) application submission. * Correlative studies that are associated with an ongoing or completed clinical trial and projects that develop endpoints for clinical trials. Preliminary data to support the feasibility of the research hypotheses and research approaches are required; however, these data do not necessarily need to be derived from studies of lung cancer.

TRANSLATIONAL MEDICINE AND THERAPEUTICS: The goal of the PhRMA Foundation's Translational Medicine and Therapeutics Program is to promote the development and use of experimental and computational methods in an integrative approach towards clinical needs in diagnosis, treatment and prevention. This can involve enhanced understanding of human biological and disease processes but requires a strong translational component. This program will support the concepts of Translational Medicine and Therapeutics as defined by the Foundation: "Translational medicine and therapeutics is a discipline focused on bridging experimental and computational technologies and discoveries in the research laboratory to their application in clinical practice. Examples of research components include activities in molecular and cellular biology, pathophysiology, systems biology, bioinformatics, modeling and simulation, and other quantitative sciences to connect basic biological concepts and entities to directly address unmet medical needs. The goals are to use clinical observation as the basis for hypothesis generation to further basic research and to efficiently advance the product of basic research to patients." Translational Medicine and Therapeutics awards will advance training and support career development of scientists engaged in research that significantly integrates cutting-edge technologies with advanced biological, chemical, and pharmacological sciences and engineering methodologies in such areas as (but not restricted to): * Genetics (Molecular, Pharmaco-, Population, Medical) * Genomics (Functional, Structural, Toxico-, Pharmaco-, Comparative) * Systems (Biology and Pharmacology) * Pathways and networks * Integrative biology * Modeling and simulation * Target Identification and Validation * Biomarker Discovery and Validation * Vaccine Development * Molecular Epidimiology * Imaging * Disease Modeling

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) will award Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award (NRSA) Short-Term Institutional Research Training Grants (T35) to eligible, domestic institutions to develop and/or enhance research training opportunities for predoctoral students interested in careers in biomedical, behavioral or clinical research. Many NIH Institutes and Centers (ICs) use this NRSA program exclusively to support intensive, short-term research training experiences for health professional students (medical students, dental students, and/or students in other health-professional programs) during the summer. This program is also intended to encourage training of graduate students in the physical or quantitative sciences to pursue research careers by short-term exposure to, and involvement in, the health-related sciences. The training should be of sufficient depth to enable the trainees, upon completion of the program, to have a thorough exposure to the principles underlying the conduct of biomedical research.

The purpose of the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) is to help ensure the vitality and diversity of the scientific and engineering workforce of the United States. The program recognizes and supports outstanding graduate students who are pursuing research-based master's and doctoral degrees in science and engineering. The GRFP provides three years of support for the graduate education of individuals who have demonstrated their potential for significant achievements in science and engineering.

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Program at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center offers undergraduates the chance to explore clinical and basic science research in laboratories in the Department of Pediatrics, University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. The primary goal is to provide students with a foundation for making career choices in the biomedical sciences. Students have the opportunity to work with one of more than 700 faculty members at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center, many of whom have active research programs that cover all areas of pediatric medicine, including the study of developmental biology, congenital disorders, genetic diseases, cancer, cardiology, neurology and immunology.

This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) encourages applications that strengthen the science of multilevel effects of cancer care interventions by addressing the problem of incomplete follow-up to abnormal screening tests for breast, colorectal, cervical and lung cancers. The goals of this FOA are two-fold. First, this FOA seeks to advance the science of multilevel interventions in three ways: a) by establishing a common conceptualization of levels and the associated level-specific factors that affect practice; b) by standardizing metrics of the levels and their main effects on other levels and the individuals needing follow-up care; and c) by developing and standardizing the analysis of the effect of interventions on the individuals, groups, and organizations responsible for intervention implementation. Second, this FOA encourages applications that test interventions to improve the follow-up of abnormal screening in one or more ways, including: a) measuring multilevel effects of single-level interventions; b) comparing single vs. multilevel interventions; and c) testing multilevel interventions.

 This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is associated with the Beau Biden Cancer MoonshotSM Initiative that is intended to accelerate cancer research. Specifically, this FOA targets the following area designated as scientific priority by the Blue Ribbon Panel (BRP): Recommendation B. Create a translational science network devoted exclusively to immunotherapy approaches to treat and prevent adult cancers. The goal of the network is to foster collaborative team science approaches to accelerate the discovery of new immune targets and evaluate novel immune-based therapies and combination approaches that eliminate established cancers in adults or to prevent cancers before they occur. 

To that end, grants of up to $130,000 over two years will be awarded to junior faculty researchers for innovative translational research projects in hematology/oncology (with a focus on hematologic malignancies) that can be either based around a clinical trial with strong correlative science or laboratory investigation.

The Pancreatic Cancer Action Network is accepting applications for its 2018 Catalyst Grant program. The program, which aims to encourage and support junior faculty in the pursuit of pancreatic cancer research and establish a career path in the field, provides grants of up to $500,000 over three years to junior investigators who have yet to secure their first significant research funding. Research projects may be basic, translational, clinical, or epidemiological in nature but must have direct applicability and relevance to pancreatic cancer. Grant recipients not only receive financial support for their funded research but also are invited to join the network's Community for Progress, a mentorship program that works to advance the goal of increasing survival rates and improving outcomes for pancreatic cancer patients. To be eligible, applicants must have a doctoral degree (PD, MD, DO, DC, ND, DDS, DVM, ScD, DNS, PharmD, or equivalent) in the biomedical sciences (or in a field applicable to health science research) and not currently be a candidate for a further doctoral degree. In addition, at the start of the grant term on July 1, 2018, applicants must hold a faculty position with the title of assistant professor, instructor, research assistant professor, or the equivalent.

The objective of this award is to facilitate a timely transition of these fellows from their mentored, postdoctoral research positions to independent, tenure-track or equivalent faculty positions. Researchers in the scientific areas of data science and cancer control science are especially encouraged to apply.

SC hereby invites grant applications for support under the Early Career Research Program in the following program areas: Advanced Scientific Computing Research (ASCR); Biological and Environmental Research (BER); Basic Energy Sciences (BES), Fusion Energy Sciences (FES); High Energy Physics (HEP), and Nuclear Physics (NP). The purpose of this program is to support the development of individual research programs of outstanding scientists early in their careers and to stimulate research careers in the areas supported by SC.

The American Association for Cancer Research-Johnson & Johnson Lung Cancer Innovation Science Grants program is a joint effort to address the need for promoting and supporting collaborative cancer research in areas that include digital therapeutics and smoking cessation, as well as biomarkers/behavioral phenotyping that bolster  understanding of how lung cancer can be successfully intercepted.  To that end, a grant of $1 million over three years will be awarded to a multi-institutional team in support of a new idea and/or innovative approach that has direct application and relevance to lung cancer prevention and interception. The proposed research should be translational in nature and include a clinical component with an endpoint relevant to improving the detection or treatment of lung cancer.

The purpose of the NCI Mentored Research Scientist Development Award (K01) is to enhance the diversity of the NCI-funded cancer research workforce by supporting eligible individuals from groups that have been shown to be underrepresented in the biomedical, behavioral, social and clinical sciences. This FOA provides salary and research support for a sustained period of "protected time" for intensive research career development under the guidance of an experienced mentor, or sponsor. The Diversity Training Branch (DTB) of the Center to Reduce Cancer Health Disparities (CRCHD), at the National Cancer Institute (NCI), invites career development award applications (K01) from individuals from backgrounds that have been shown to be underrepresented in health-related science.
